    Typicalo studio cop out. They not like the writer’s vision so they change the ending so they can appease the buffoons who define a movie’s worth by the ending and at the same time give themselves an opportunity to make a sequel to cash in on any good box office iteration 1 may earn.

    Both reasons are equally invalid, those who didn’t like the writer’s vision are free to imagine an alternate ending for themselves, and do so without compromising the original work (yeah I know it was pretty compromised anyhow).
    -Godfather part 2 aside- sequels are usually a waste of everyone’s time and money. That is particularly true of a one concept movie such as “I am Legend”. The movie strained to entertain for the duration of part 1 - So by the end of part 2 killing zombies whilst showing previously unconsidered consequences of all the humans disappearing is gonna be pretty old and extremely dull.

    Both version were good but the version in which he dies I really like because it shows the sacrifice he makes to save humanity. In the alternate version he survives and it doesn’t show the tragedy and despair that they went through. I personally like a movie that doesn’t have to end well but includes a good a$$ story.

    ok…that’s it! i never liked this movie and now that they actually made a alternate ending for it i will never see another second of the sequel(s)…don’t even care about them…
    alternate endings are just a slap across the audience’s face! it’s like, if you watch the movie you go all “YEAH! finally! he’s dead!”, but now that there’s a alternate ending you go all “hell! he’s still alive! he’ll come back to torment me again and again and again!”… jesus!

    why the need to release the whole movie once again? this cant be scene, this gotta be nuked.

    the alternative ending is/can be cut directly to the normal version movie, as it simply exchanges/replaces the last 7mins of the movie.

    there is no need to pre the first bazillion minutes of the movie all over again. there has been many hdtv releases of iamlegend by now, so this is uberlame.

    the gotta be scenebanned.

    The alternative ending actually changes the meaning of the entire film and is closer to the meaning behind the book.

    Spoiler: Will realises he has become the “monster” to the creatures by killing them off for his experiments. The creatures were actually after Will’s “victims” and that’s why they leave him alone when he gives it back.

    This was the original studio ending before it was re-shot for the more sunshine and roses last hope to humanity ending that was released in the theaters.

    As someone else mentioned it brings the movie back toward the original meaning of the book. It’s not about Smiths character becoming a legend for saving the human race. Rather, it’s about Smith’s character realizing he has become a legend to this new dominant life form. He’s the boogie man, the devil, the monster they will tell tales of in the future.

    The theatrical ending doesn’t give you any hint of that. He just kills a bunch of “monsters” and himself in a effort to save humanity. Then we’re shown ‘the village’ where his legend will live on with the rest of humanity. Complete and utter dreck.

    This endings much better then the theatrical release, though he still should of died at some point.

    The alternative ending was SO MUCH BETTER, i hated the orig. ending, it seemed pointless and completly out of character. Only thing i dident like about the film. Either of the two alternative endings would have made the film a lot better. Someone needs to slap the director for picking the wrong ending!

    … it takes the explosion from the theatrical release, and edits it together with the alternate ending where he survives, making it appear like he has killed the monsters, AND survived. This isn’t a third ending, but just an edited version of the two!

    I liked the original ending alot better for multiple reasons:
    1. If he survived it wouldn’t be called “i am legend” it would be “i am hero”. He needs to die for it to be a legend
    2. It goes with the book being that he dies in both the book and the original ending.
    3. The original makes more sense cause if he didn’t kill them then the infected would stay down there until they killed all of them cause no uv light could get into the basement. Also if they still were human on the inside (as was put in the alternative) then why in the flash backs did it show some being violent towards the non infected.
    4. And the final reason is that with the original they can’t really do a sequel and stuff it up.

    This is a lil off topic.

    I was wondering what’s the min. requirements to play this movie on a comp (and any other x264 720p/1080p) Like what graphics card/processor/memory is needed to play smoothly. I’ve been wanting to dl and try out some of these x264 rips but I know they won’t play on my current system, so I’ll get the cheapest system that can play them.

    OT: The alternate ending was meh. I prefer to have will smith die, and leave the story like that instead of seeing a sequel starring him. Sacrifice FTW!

    now this is what I’ve been waiting for!

    @ 64 basically a decent Pentium 4 plus a good graphics card with HD support such as the GeForce 6 Series, etc. can play HD

    I’ve had a P4 2.6 with GeForce 6600 and it plays 1080p and 720p .avi and quicktime HD videos fine. although when it comes to .mkv HD videos, its really slow.

    to 64: they play fine on my Athlon 64 3200+ with nVidia 8600 GTS and 512MB ram, on my monitor or my hdtv & receiver via component & spdif.

    @64: Save up at least $700 and buy a somewhat decent system. Q6600 with nice motherboard 8GB of RAM and a 9600GT costs about $620 shipped. Spend a little bit on a case and power supply and you’re all set.

    The alternate ending is better in my opinion as it matches up with the film the one they used was out of character and out of the theme of the movie and the original story(yes he die in the original but its HOW he dies that is the important). To be honest this film is more of a remake of Omega Man than the book Neville was just Joe average in the book which is half the story as he has to learn about biology to cure the disease not a doctor to start with.

    I can’ say I would not like a sequel I enjoy this genre and I wasn’t able to pick as many holes in it as I usually am with this type of film, there is even some decent excuses for the “why didn’t you do”s that are in it.

    the alternate ending is much better, smiths character IS legend, but not for “saving humanity” but for torturing a new species/mutation.

    He is evil, that’s the whole point of the story and in the alt. ending he finally realises it.

    I would’ve preferred it if he realised it and then died anyway (along with the woman and the kid), but we can’t have everything.

    Getting religion showed in my face in the end was silly too. I’d have a hard time believing in a benevolent God after the whole billions of people dying thing, maybe that’s just me. Add the whole survivors getting hunted down and devoured by berserk creatures that used to be human and you probably have enough reasons to leave the church out of the last scene

    I hated this movie for a hundred different reasons. There are FAR better post apocalyptic zombie movies (and these were a bloody cliche 15 years ago!)

    Watch the road warrior trilogy with mel gibson. (no zombies). Much, much better and done with a tiny budget.
