Huge Curved Alienware Monitor

Martin posted about a 150 inch plasma TV unveiled by Panasonic the other day (link). Well it seems computer monitors are getting extremely large as well. If you don’t think your widescreen is wide enough and you have a fat enough wallet you might wanna check this new Alienware Monitor out when it’s released in the second half of 2008.

The Sighting: We can’t have one of these Alienware curved monitors until the second half of this year, but until then, we’ve been abducted by its four nearly seamless and sharp screens of DLP goodness. Lit by LEDs, this 2880×900 monster is well over three feet wide and is said to have an other-worldly .02ms response time, great for gaming. The Soylent Green: You can see the seams between this monitor’s four segments, but the Alienware humanoids tell us that flaw will be gone by the time this craft lands on Earth. The blacks look a bit washed out to our eyes, too. Price is yet to be determined.

Check out some more pics and a video at this link.

How long is it going to be before someone says “LoLz CrYsIs iS SuXxOrS! lOlZ!”
    Get over it… it’s a good game!

Now on topic - How long will it take to get neck-ache from turning so often?

  7. TehMacalin
    January 11th, 2008 | 21:48

Is it better than HALO? I think it might be too big. Imagine when you’re playing something and got to look at the left and right sides of the screen all the time. You’ll get a stiff neck from turning your head for that.

First, this thing will cost so much, probably only some rich ass kid will get this for his birthday.

Second, what kind of resolution is that? it’s just not normal, for gaming this might seem to be good, but for normal work, the resolution/size combination is way off.

    Third, rearprojection? =/

  12. Chomiq
    January 11th, 2008 | 22:06

So basicly they just put 4 screens into 1 and synchronized them … 0.02ms response time - right! Just cause it says Alienware and its big doesnt mean it’s any good.

    January 11th, 2008 | 22:09

I think its crap, why?…its a back lit low contrast $$$$ hungry piece o crap!. The future is OLED! not this, 100%

    January 11th, 2008 | 22:20

    @4
Nothing currently available can run Crysis on that with all the settings maxed. Even Tri-SLI cannot do it.

    January 11th, 2008 | 22:30

@Chomiq - It’s DLP so the response time stated is entirely true.

@CC - My 6 year old DLP projector has a higher contrast ratio than any LCD monitor will ever have. DLPs have arguably the best blacks of any of the current technologies, and I don’t see why this would be any different.

The biggest drawback I see is the low vertical resolution and the rear projection/viewing angle issues.

For the vertical resolution I’m sure that cost was a major factor since multiple 1080p DLP chips would make this thing unattainable for most anyone.

this would be awesome for racing games, having the screen cover your peripheral vision will give a great sense of depth but it should be a bit taller and if your gonna make a cutting edge monitor that wont be out for another 6 months or so why not go with OLED? anyone who’s buying something like this probably has a little extra $ to drop anyway.

Alienware so overpriced. This monitor will be over priced as well.

    2880×900… pathetic

My CRT does 1600×1200 and I’ve found few decently priced LCDs that can even come close.

let me know when this thing can do a proper 3840×1200 and then maybe we’ll talk.

nice, but shacknews has all the pics. you can see the 3 screen edges when gaming. also its just projection. I’d rather have a 100″ HD plasma screen to game on.

  28. Anon
    January 11th, 2008 | 23:33

This just won’t work. You will have to have a $7000+ computer to be able to run Crysis at that resolution, its the worst idea ever by Alienware, and they know it isn’t going to work.

  29. piitti
    January 11th, 2008 | 23:55

Everybody is talking about playing crysis and blah blah… it’s a 10 hour long game not like it’s the only game you’ll be playing on this. Lot’s of great games that will propably look awesome on this monitor.

OMG some people get a grip, its new!

Remember the fist flat screen TVs to what we have now!
(My first wasnt even flat screen it just had a pane a flat glass lol!)

Its obvious that they have used crysis to target the people they want to sell it too!

Give it a chance, imagine 360 degree vision! ow coll would that be!

This would suck for any type of proffession other than Gaming or video game design (odd-format monitor dept.) I have a fealing this will be marketed directly to the rich kid gamer or serious Racing Sim players and My fellow Flight Sim Players. This thing would be amazing with my FSX and Track IR. man I could get 2 of them and have a true 180 degree view! Alien is a good company to market this because they hit gaming hard in the main stream. I can’t wait to not be able to afford this. maybe someone will upload a torrent of it on TPB.

I take what I said back. It looks amazing if you look at it from the front. The video quality looks amazing. It looks as if it’d kinda’ be 3D. But the back of the monitor makes me think of a projection type monitor. Ew.

  51. Darth Arcon
    January 12th, 2008 | 05:06

The aspect ratio is all screwy! I doubt many games would support that resolution, so they would be completely skewed! No thanks, Ill take a nice 1080p DLP projector and have a nice big 120″ screen. Or, if I cant have 120″ due to physical limitations in the room, no problem! I dont have to keep the same size, I can make it smaller if need be! Plus, projectors just have a cool theater feel to them, whether your watching movies or playing games.

This is a waist of money, IMO…

It’s look huge and fugly. Nowadays, people prefer slim and thin over fugly CRT. However, .02ms response time is very impressive for monitor.

  68. Darth Arcon
    January 12th, 2008 | 12:47

Heh, the only reason they released this thing is for publicity…Why do you think Panasonic released the gigantic plasma? You know that it wouldnt be a very good quality picture! Very few people are going to buy something like that with crappy picture when there are already such things (projectors) that can get that size, and even bigger, while at the same time producing a picture far superior! However, companies like Alienware dont get news reports for releasing 22″ LCD monitors, even if they have super cool whatever technology, do they?

Its just another form of advertisement…only this time it is more like tricking the media into advertising your company for free…After all, your more likely to be interested in a news report than a commercial…

  69. Benlro1
    January 12th, 2008 | 12:52

    @69

pretty much exactly what i was going to say.. and completely true. the did not create this thing to sell, even as a prototype it is far off. they created it for publicity, and they got it. but really its cool that they are taking a new approach to monitors. i’m sure we will see similar products in the future, with superior designs (and doubtfully dlp), but not anytime toooo soon
