TV show torrent distributors, EZTV, have recently posted a new British sitcom, “How Not to Live Your Life”, starting with the first three episodes.
Now, I know what you’re thinking.. yet another boring pom comedy. I must admit, I was never a fan of the British accent, and it was enough to stop me from watching shows from there for a long time. With the recent success of “Doctor Who (2005)”, I decided I would give this show a go, and I must say I was pleasantly surprised. If you like JD’s fantasies in Scrubs, then you will most certainly laugh out loud at Don’s musings while he fumbles for the right thing to do in each situation.

Don is a single twentysomething who constantly fails to guide his way through life. His overactive mind doesn’t help things as it plays out scenes of what he shouldn’t say or do. When he moves into his recently deceased grandmother’s house, he meets Eddie: his Gran’s carer who doesn’t want to leave. To help pay his rent, he decides to get a roommate in the shape of his teenage sweetheart Abby, and hopes to win her back. The only problem is, she comes with a new arrogant boyfriend, Karl.

Xenophobic? My entire family is British, which is one reason the accent bothers me alot, I’ve been exposed to it for a long time. I was also trying to appeal to those people who would normally skip a British show because they don’t usually like them, as I thought this was a show worth overlooking that kind of thing for.

UK shows usually have 6 eps to a season, I’d say 3 more.
needit – it means they have ordered 6 episodes in total. First season runs are usually quite short so they have a chance to determine how good it will do. Contracts and all, y’know?

I love that all the british posters who slag off americans every chance they get are now up in arms about such a nonsense little comment. Why is everyone getting so worked up? Hardly racism that has been written now is it. How many of us Brits throw up our arms and protest when another Brit refers to a Frenchman as a frog? Come on, Pom is really more of a term of endearment than anything else. It’s not bourne of ignorance or hate and I think people need to step back and question exactly what they’re offended about.
How is it acceptable of a country that will continue to air (before the watershed) Basil Fawlty on Fawlty Towers prancing around like a Nazi in front of Germans that clearly aren’t Nazis and call that comedy and then jump up and down like a bunch of wankers when someone refers to us as Poms?

After reading that I didn’t even want to continue looking at the rest of the site. There was no need for the insulting comments about British people and their accents. It was very rude and a perfect example of how to stop people reading your posts and the rest of the site.

I’m British, consider myself of moderate intelligence(!), and did not find any of the comments in this review racist. It did not even cross my mind. Like Quin said, this is a good show that should be tried by all – even if you do find the British accent grates on you a little.

That’s funny, because I can pick up the differences (especially the caricatured ones), but am not familiar enough to figure what each one means. Must be like making fun of “the” American accent. British accent?….Last time I checked, there was no unified “British accent” you got English, Scottish, Welsh and Irish, all of which are very distinctive and have their own variations. Surely you don’t think GB is one country?
The irony is the post, that so many Brits find annoying, is actually giving other Americans a bad name.

It takes all sorts to make a world, and morons can be found in any country.
And as has been pointed out, there is no ‘British’ accent, unless your referring to the ‘Queens English’ fake accent that no-one in the UK actually speaks.
In fact its only used because its what the rest of the world expects, using a regional accent for example would confuse us with Australians, lol.

Frankly, the only time a U.K. show has been worse than its U.S. equivalent was comparing the U.S. “Big Bang Theory” to the U.K.’s terrible (slightly worse than “Are You Being Served”) sitcom “Lab Rats”. “Coupling” was better than “Friends” and only loses out in the “sheer volume of episodes” department (and the U.S. attempt at “Coupling” was hideous). “The Office” and “The Office” are fairly equal but, again, the U.K. came up with the idea first.
It’s gotten to the point where I need a heads-up, like you did here with “How Not To Live Your Life”, for a *U.S.* show which is actually *good*. The U.K. rarely lets me down when it comes to their shows being good, well-written programming (yes, episode one of “Lab Rats” is a half hour of wasted time I will never get back).
I, too, find the “British accent” concept somewhat funny as well, after the “Spike accent” concept on “Buffy The Vampire Slayer”. U.K.-native Anthony Head, “Giles” on Buffy (for those under rocks for the past 12 years), was unable to figure out from what part of the U.K. “Spike” got his accent, his best guess being “Lower Watford”.
Speaking as a Central Midwestern U.S. resident (call centers love us because we have, essentially, no accent whatsoever), y’all sound weird, but us mild-mannered Midwestern U.S. residents won’t get our collective panties in a bunch over it.
