Houston infected with electronic-eating ants

Houston has been hit with a computer bug like no other: a swarm of ants that are eating through electronics. The “Crazy Raspberry Ants” are believed to have arrived in Texas aboard a cargo ship, and are causing widespread mayhem. For some unknown reason they are attracted to electrical equipment, which is causing problems for residents in the Deep South. The ants have destroyed PCs in homes and offices, ruined pumps at a sewage treatment plant and even taken a fancy to homeowners’ gas meters, according to reports from the Associated Press. “If you open a computer, you would find a cluster of ants on the motherboard and all over,” said Tom Raspberry, the owner of Budget Pest Control and the man the ants have been named after.

“You’d get 3,000 or 4,000 ants inside and they create arcs. They’ll wipe out any computer,” he told Computerworld. The Johnson Space Center has reportedly called in pest control experts to make sure the little critters don’t start chomping their way through NASA’s computer systems. Although, according to Raspberry, he’s already seen colonies on the NASA site. So what should worried PC owners be looking for? “They’re itty-bitty things about the size of fleas, and they’re just running everywhere,” Patsy Morphew of Pearland, told AP. “There’s just thousands and thousands of them. If you’ve seen a car racing, that’s how they are. They’re going fast, fast, fast. They’re crazy.”

George Orwell must be rolling in his grave! No wonder conspiracy theories are becoming more popular, there either dead on or???

All I see hear are jokes and ignorance. This is a WORLD WIDE concern. The War On Terror is a joke when the US leaves its borders and ports wide open. Hell, they tried to sell the ports not long ago. Something stinks with all this and I have serious concerns for the future of the US and mankind.

    Good luck to all!!

    to put things straight:

The ONLY reason the US got involved with wwII was pearl harbour….after that they had to respond, and not let the nazis and their allies run amock like the first 3 years

don’t kid yourself with noble intentions, there is only one motivator nowadays and its $$$$$ …corporations simply OWN politicians in the USA…hell your voting system isn’t even worth calling democratic…..imo belgium is the country where you come closest to the fantasy of democracy as there you HAVE to vote, don’t go vote and you get fined

in the US it seems to me that if you vote for a candidate, you vote to give big power to their industrial buddies, oh, and screw the poor folk and throw people in jail for smoking a joint :P

    on topic now :
I would LOVE to get my hands on some of those ants and drop em off at some of my former employers :P (I’ve worked in some of europe’s biggest datacenters 0_0)

This is no joke, I live in south Texas, picked up my macbook pro and opened it to find an ant crawling across the screen. Thinking nothing of it, I squished it and went among my business. All of a sudden seconds later, a SWARM of them started flooding out of the vents, USB, screen, keyboard… everywhere, and they were all over the plug and mouse and inside the mouse.. It was a nightmare. I fought a battle for about 30 minutes cleaning them all out that day before leaving to school.

Yeah we got billions of them here in europe, they actually improved my internet connection, seems we reached some kind of symbiosis.i let them munch on old motherboards and stuff i dont need and they make the right connections.i think its brilliant.
maybe the ants that arrived to the land of god and fortune, got a bit dizzy from the long journey, and just started munching away without consulting the local community first!!
just a theory!but i could ask my private colony, they respond pretty good to binarys by now,i think with a further development of out friendship we can reach big hights.
sry for the americans who have to suffer from those
ignorant ants from across the big pond.

Hillarious and sad in one go.
Great to see that there is a least talking (even if not serious) going on between the countries and there fellow country men.
Every part of the world has it’s up and downsites.

I honestly cannot understand how ppl can put trust in political systems, knowing that it all goes down the drain.

Freedom, Democracy and Peace exsists only on the paper. There is no real freedom anymore, we are all bound to our work/life/enviromental circumstances. We are all held hostage by the economy. We bow down and say thanks when we get our a**es kicked again and again.

On Topic: I think, lets pick the ants up and put them all over the place. Whats wrong with having no electronics ? Think about the upsite, when was the last time you read a book or actually finished a thought before going back to the usual (TV/Internet/Movies … you name it) ?
We might all just come to our senses which is something you do not really have much time for in the “normal” life.

    just my 2 cents

    @131
They dont eat the cables, components or whatnot, they go to the appliances for the heat source and then they short the whole thing and themselves in the process, defenitively they are crazy arc ants…could they be the next generation superconductor ?

Here we are, people complaining about international politics when the real problem is these ants.

I live in Houston now, which means that this is gonna suck if I get infested.

    Anyone hear anything about prevention?

This is scary. I wonder what kills them? In another article, it says they refuse to die after being sprayed with over-the-counter poison.. That means they’ve tried a buncha different bug sprays for these stubborn little viruses.. I hope they find a solution soon. I wonder if they’re simply a product of mother nature? You don’t really see other animals/insects having THAT much obsession with man-made things. Makes me think it’s genetically engineered, or…GASP…anyone here remember “Small Soldiers”? I bet if you crack open one of those ants’ head, you’ll see a tiny, tiny microchip………..

One day, nano ants will arise…and we’ll all be doomed!

They swarm the electronics because of the heat source ? … I don’t live in the us but isn’t Texas a warm place to begin with . Just seems strange behaviour why do they need the extra heat or do they just swarm the electronics at night ?

I just don’t understand all the anti-US sentiments here. If you read the comments from beginning to end, it wasn’t someone from the US that started this sh!t. It was some Euro-douchebag that made a completely off-topic comment. something about the US “stepping on someones toes” or something of that nature. WTF is your problem with us? The middle-east has been at war for 1000 years. -with eachother. Muslims killing Muslims/Jews. etc etc. Don’t want your “toes stepped on”? The US has always tried to help the other UN countries and always, gets blasted in the end. I personally think the US should drop out of the UN, Seal it’s borders, and ship each country in the middle-east a nuke or two. Then let them go at it. Then those idiots can kill eachother permanently. I’d call it “Operation: Blown-Glass” A few nukes apiece for those warring idiots, and they’d turn that desert into glass. I don’t think we should be over there, and I don’t think it’s any of our concern if they want to terrorize eachother and war constantly, that’s their prerogative.

As soon as the rest of the world stop using your worthless USD for oil, your economy will be seen for what it is. As far as the war, seems to me that stealing all the german secrets and scientists turned you into the biggest warmongering nation in modern history.
