Hotel Rwanda 2004 DVDRip AC3 XviD iNT-PFa

Here is a movie that I can talk about. A very good film that I saw 2 years after it was released, my bad. The movie is in the #72 place in the IMDB Top 250 and worth it. Really recommended to the people who haven’t seen it yet. PFa is back and I hope they will start releasing more stuff once the summer is over. Their quality is always good, enjoy!

Don Cheadle gives a riveting performance as Paul Rusesabagina, the manager of a European-owned hotel in Rwanda, who created a secret refugee camp for the Tutsi people during the brutal genocide committed against them by the Hutu people in 1994. His efforts helped to save 1200 lives out of close to a million who were killed. HOTEL RWANDA shows this man’s courage, while also capturing the political events that occurred between April and September ‘94. First, United Nations soldiers are restricted from fighting back against Hutu guerillas, even after the Rwandan president is assassinated and the country is thrown into chaos. But as the fighting worsens, all non-Rwandans including UN peacekeepers, Europeans, and Americans are evacuated.

This leaves the Tutsi people defenseless against aggressive Hutus who are armed with machine guns and machetes. While working the system with strategic phone calls to powerful international contacts of the hotel, Rusesabagina also uses smart lies and power plays to hold off the Hutus. The morale among the refugees is low, but because they are protected from the inconceivable brutality happening outside the hotel’s gates, they maintain a sense of hope.

Powerful acting from all cast members, including throngs of children, makes this film touching and believable. Sophie Okonedo offers moving support as Rusesabagina’s wife Tatiana, Nick Nolte shows knowing machismo as an American UN officer, and Joaquin Phoenix turns in a heartfelt display as a TV journalist. But it is the delicate treatment that director Terry George gives the insane, helpless situation depicted in HOTEL RWANDA which makes the film so penetrating. While the violence and gore of the genocide play a disturbing part in the film, the focus lies on the heroism of its protagonist and the strength with which he navigates under seemingly impossible odds.

Indeed a great movie. If you were not alive when this happened, you are probably not old enough to watch it. Also, if you like this, I recommend The Last King of Scotland – a recent film.

Wow, i am surprised that this movie was posted so late. It is a really great movie. If anyone has anything racist to say, they should save it for the next Tyler Perry movie, and leave this section for real human beings.

Very good movie, but I wish it would have extended past the ending, because as it stands, it portrays the Tutsi rebels as heroes for stopping the genocide. It does not accurately portray the fact that Paul Rusesabagina had some very harsh views regarding the warlord mass murderer Paul Kagame, then leader of the Tutsi rebels and now president of Rwanda. Rusesabagina refused an award given to him by Kagame on behalf of the new Tutsi government, and just last year, he called for the indictment of Kagame as a war criminal and for his role in assassinating President Juvenal Habyarimana, which proved to be the spark the mass killings of Tutsis in Rwanda. In his words:

“The issuance on November 23, 2006 by French Judge Jean-Louis Bruguière of international arrest warrants against 9 close collaborators of President Kagame for downing the presidential aircraft on April 6, 1994 and killing everyone on board, including two African presidents and three French nationals, is the closest humanity has come to dealing directly with the root causes of the Rwandan genocide, and may finally pave the way to genuine reconciliation among Rwandans.”

    http://www.taylor-report.com/articles/index.php?id=28

Paul Rusesabagina, unlike Hollywood, is consistent in his moral opposition to all tyrants and mass murderers. This fact needs to be represented as well as the continuing mass murder conducted by Tutsi factions in the ongoing Congolese Civil War which was largely instigated by the RPF’s attempt to expropriate the Congo’s mineral and gem resources.

@#20 Matt. Interesting. So I guess Americans really just want to settle for the tired stock Hollywood narratives of good and evil, without even considering the real views and experiences of the actual people involved. It’s a shame that very obviously no one cares about Rwanda, even now after this highly rated Hollywood production. Which really makes me doubt the effectiveness that movies like this have for raising awareness of serious international issues.

It reminds me of when Paul Rusesabagina came to my university to speak. The very next day some professor was ranting in a public forum about how the international community should have gone in to fully back the Tutsi RPF. They couldn’t even wait a day before spitting in Rusesabagina’s face and trampling all over his message.

@Slamothecow: Thanks. At least there are some people who are still committed to the idea of truth. Regarding that incident at my uni, I did manage to draft an editorial to the university paper questioning the propriety of holding a forum to stroke the ego of Kagame’s RPF the day after Rusesabagina came to speak. It was never published, surprise, surprise.

    @#27 Unhappy

It’s not quite that simple. If you look at who’s backing the Hutus and the Tutsis, it’s obvious that the former are France-aligned and the latter are Anglo-aligned. The RPF as a rebel organization drew support from the United States under the framework of Cold War anti-Communism and training from the UK via Uganda. This was played against a consistently French-backed Hutu government. It’s no surprise that it’s France that helped Rwanda fight off Tutsi insurgents in 1990 finally exposed and filed charges against the RPF’s war crimes and assassination of the former president.

I’m not saying that the USA and Britain instigated the civil war and the ensuing genocide, but it was obviously in the USGovt’s interest not to intervene. Even if it’s a small, relatively insignificant country, the governments of world powers aren’t going to intervene to stop their “friends” from getting into power.

Not that Rwanda is an insignificant country. Not by a long stretch, since it borders the eastern part of the Congo that is rich in diamonds and precious metals like tantalum (a crucial material used in our beloved dvd players and computers) It has been the active policy of the new Tutsi government to take over the mines. And the Rwandan Tutsis are enslaving the local people to do it.

    http://www.afrol.com/Countries/DRC/documents/un_resources_2002_rwanda.htm

The bulk of coltan (tantalum ore) exported from the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, as much as 60 to 70 per cent, has been mined under the direct surveillance of RPA mining détachés and evacuated by aircraft from airstrips near mining sites directly to Kigali or Cyangugu. No taxes are paid. Rwandan military aircraft, Victor Bout’s aircraft and small airline companies are used in the evacuation of the coltan. RPA has maintained control over most of the coltan sites where rich deposits are found, where the percentage of tantalum is high, and where local airstrips are accessible. A variety of forced labour regimes are found at sites that have been managed by RPA mining détachés, some for coltan collection, some for transport, others for domestic services. Many accounts report the widespread use of prisoners imported from Rwanda who work as indentured labour.

Eagle Wings Resources International, a coltan comptoir in Bukavu, is a subsidiary of Trinitech International Inc., based in Ohio, United States. Eagle Wings has offices in Rwanda, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Approximately 25 per cent of Eagle Wings coltan is shipped from Kigali to the Ulba Metallurgical Plant of NAC Kazatomprom, in Kazakhstan. Another 25 per cent is sold to the parent company of Eagle Wings, Trinitech International Inc. in the United States, which arranges for sales to both Ulba and to the Chinese processing facility at Ningxia Non-Ferrous Metals Smeltery (NNMS). H. C. Starck, based in Germany and a subsidiary of the transnational corporation Bayer AG, purchases about 15 per cent of Eagle Wings coltan. H. C. Starck has denied on numerous occasions obtaining coltan originating from Central Africa. In a press statement issued on 24 May 2002, H. C. Starck reiterated that the company had purchased no material originating in Central Africa since August 2001. The Panel possesses documents showing the contrary. In the same press release, H. C. Starck claimed that its coltan originates from “peasant suppliers” and not from rebel groups. In fact, no coltan exits from the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo without benefiting either the rebel group or foreign armies.
