On the surface, both films are about the gore. But it takes someone intelligent to dig deeper. Hostel, the first one, was a great social commentary. The guys were all there to pick up easy women, treat like them like objects to use and abuse. Yet the tables were turned, when they realized *they* were being hunted. If sex can be bought, why not killing? As for Saw, I watch them and enjoy the films. The gore I couldn't care less about. The gore is now boring to me. The reason I keep watching is for Tobin Bell, and the background of his fascinating character, Jigsaw. Each movie on the surface has more traps, blah blah blah, more victims. But the true entertainment, for me at least, is that each film is backstory to the one previous. II tells more about I, III gives more insight to I and II, and IV is all about Jigsaw and who he is/was. Tobin Bell's Jigsaw has the same exact appeal as Hannibal Lecter. I beg to differ.
