Hitachi introduces second generation of 1TB drives

Hitachi renovated its 3.5” hard drive family and now offers the second-generation 1 TB drive, which does not offer more capacity or speed, but comes with effective power saving features that may allow storage farms to run these 3.5” drives at 2.5” power consumption rates. On the surface, there is not much new about Hitachi’s new 3.5” 7K1000.B drive. In fact, the main difference to spot right away is the fact that the storage density has been increased substantially and Hitachi GST has joined the leading 3.5” vendors: Instead of five 200 GB disks, the new drive has three 333 GB disks. What makes the new 7200 rpm drive interesting is not its performance or capacity (which theoretically could hit 1.6 TB in 5-disk models), but its power consumption.

Compared to the 8.4 watts the first-gen drive consumed in idle-mode, the B-model checks in at only 5.2 watts. And if power consumption is the primary concern of the user (such as data storage facilities), the drive supports a “reduced power idle state”: The disk rotation speed can be dropped via HDD commands to less than 5000 rpm, which will take the idle power consumption down to 2.4 watts That is close to 2.5” territory (about 2 – 2.2 watts) and could make these drives an interesting option for any environment that does not depend on maximum data transfer rates. The price of the terabyte drive is substantially lower than what we paid last year. Hitachi said that the 7K1000.B is offered at $239.99 MSRP, which means that you should expect street prices not too far away from the $200 mark.

Meh, fewer platters on higher density for the same overall size means lower performance. So it’s 3 watts less. How many watts does a flashlight bulb consume?

Data center managers say power and cooling is their biggest concern. They say storage capacity is not an issue. So, it seems if you can run these drives with less power and at a low temp, data centers will cost less to operate. Lower cost means we get to pay less for web hosting service. :)

    $199 for 1TB
    $119 for 750GB

I think 750GB is still the sweet spot for storage : price ratio.

    @15 someone

No where does it claim in the post that this is the first 3 platter 1TB drive. This post is about power consumption

    Hitachi 7K1000.B = 5.2 watts
    Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 = 8 watts

Tip of the day: read the post before posting stupid comments

Thank you for this post martin,

these are exactly the hdds i need,

    i already have 3 WD GP 1TB

    but these are much better

    2.4 Watts
    less than 5000 rpm

    perfect

Agreed with purepov. I’m in the market for a new 1tb drive for storing Movies/TV eps; thus the drive wont need to be high-speed, and energy conservation is a big plus (however small). This drive seems perfect for me, especially because I could run it @ 5k rpm’s at home, go to a lan and flick it over to 7200 because sharing is caring. :)

Another thought is this seems to be article-based advertising. I’m definately more likely to go out and buy a drive because of this rather than try the ‘Kick and win’ advertisement which is currently annoying the crap outa me; and dont get me started on those ones that hijack the page with the ’skip add’ button >_>

    My two cents

Actually, increasing plate density increases read/write speeds. I know it from camparison of old T7K and new P7K version of the drives with the same power saving technology. While offering higher density yet same amount of storage and low Random seek time (19+ms) P7K series shows up to 5-9MB/s faster speeds in write/read tasks. So in whole T7K = 69-73MB/s (READ), P7K = 75-81MB/s (READ).

Same here with 1TB drives. Faster speeds, low consumption but also increased seek times. It’s about all ‘Power Saving’ HDDs from all manufacturers.
