History Channel Mega Disasters Oil Apocalypse WS PDTV XviD-SomeTV

Oil is the lifeblood of modern civilization. This Mega Disasters episode contains interviews with a number of oil ‘experts’, who have written books on oil dependence and the peak oil theory. Also within the episode, discussed are energy alternatives to oil with their advantages and disadvantages. This program helped me to better understand as to why the current oil prices are at their current level. Also available:

The world runs on oil, but it won’t last forever. Many experts predict that it will begin to run out sometime this century. Is it too late to avoid an energy meltdown ?

    the global oil production peak has come and gone. this show may help introduce some of the more doomer scenerios but there are other ways to curtail such a tragic possiblity by an international pact that will require nations to power down. more gardens and an economy that isnt based souly on blind growth. now shut up or light up

    Zoas, yeah you know i’m ukrainian and you must know what happened to our chernobyl nuclear power plant in 1986. play S.T.A.L.K.E.R. game – its pretty much uses real looks of the area. it’s like nuked 100s times harder than Hiroshima and Nagasaki
    by the way how do you propose to put reactors on cars? )

    Nikmurder…you don’t put nuclear reactors on cars! You put batteries on cars and the cars run on electricity! I know what happened at Chernobyl…sad…but that was a mistake that could have been prevented. We have done nothing but ADVANCE in the area of nuclear energy since then. It’s a shame that the world is going to come to an end as we know it before we can even try using the cleanest, most-efficient method of supplying energy to our world. Oh, I don’t play video games…

    @15
    Oh, come on! The ZONA is deserted just because the government evacuated it. But the radiation levels are the same, sometimes lower than in the rest of Ukraine or Bielarus, except some isoleted pockets of radiation around Pripyat and the power plant itself. I love the STALKER game, I’m going through it right now for the second time, but to say that it has any basis in fact is laughable.

  20. nikmurder
    May 31st, 2008 | 11:57

    gbl, evac was really necessary. and still there’s a керук hi radiation level
    sure there are ways around “hot spots” but they only let ppl with special passes to go there once in awhile
    the point about STALKER is that guys who did it went there and did a lot of photos based on which they did the game world
    so it actually looks a lot like real zona
    that is what i was trying to tell the french guy )
    and yeah the story of stalker surely has nothing to do with reality except for the explosion itself and radiation
    it’s pretty much is based on sci-fi story by Strugatskie brothers. the idea of Zona and stalkers and artefacts and finally the wish-come-true thing in the end. it’s quite popular in exUSSR. you should give it a try if you like the game )

  21. nikmurder
    May 31st, 2008 | 12:03

    @18
    Zoas you made your point
    yeah if it’s 100% safe – i’m good with it
    and dont forget to regarge your car ) i often forget with my cellphone )
    it was both a human mistake and construction one
    surely the new reactors aren’t that bad )
    but still like psychologically for me they are dangerous
    just cause the chernobyl one went off
    no games? try the book i proposed for gbl guy in comment 20
    :)

    take a Proper look at the whole chernobyl thing.
    it didnt have such a devastating effect on life (human or otherwise) at all.

    It actually is a lot safer than the oil companies tell you (nuclear bombs are different BTW)

    @22
    >it didnt have such a devastating effect on life (human or otherwise) at all.
    that is not true at all
    and that is not some kind of “oil companies conspiracy”
    i live like less than 100 km from chernobyl
    you tell me )
    nukes are a bit different yes
    but the aftermath of both explosions are quite the same – radiation poisoning
    radioactive materials which were propelled in the air and then got into soil have half-life of 100+ years

    Are you kidding me? They never produce at full capacity! It’s in the oil companies best interests to never produce at 100% capacity, that way demand ALWAYS outstrips supply which means prices rise which equates to PROFIT. OPEC are a pretty good example of how cartels sit around and set prices/set quotas.

    They’re always finding more and more oil it just becomes harder/more expensive to tap as it’s deeper/in more difficult to drill areas. Until it becomes “as” or “more” profitable than the current fields it will never get exploited.

    Run out of oil this decade? I’ve never heard so much bullsh*t in all my life. This century? Probably. If you believe the scaremongering back in the 90’s we shouldn’t have any oil today.

    The rest of the world shouldnt be subsiding american any more, they are poor and feckered.
