castro sure did turn them into a player… granted, those days are behind them, but they played. anyone pointing soviet nukes at the US (during the cold war) has some cards. IIRC kennedy threatened to start the whole nuke thing with the soviets because of cuba.

More like turned Cuba from a colonial paradise to a small, isolated communist country in the Carribean that has no legitimate governmental structure (i.e. Cronyism), no freedom of speech, a failing and outdated technology infrastructure and no friends other than other communist countries (ie China, Russia, and Venezuela) and people that like well grown tobacco (Dominican is good enough for me).
Sorry the only thing that Cuba is a major player in is propaganda and saber rattling, nt though.
on the other hand Cuba has free medical treatment (like those of Canada/UK) and cheaper medicines unlike in USA, go figure

Fidel did what the US has not been able to do to this day, he put the mafia out of business, NY gangster Meyer Lansky, took all his millions and built a hotel, the Rivera in 1957, which to this day is the best hotel in Cuba, Castro took the hotel and kicked all the mobsters out of Cuba.
If it wasn’t for Castro defending all of us from capitalism which is the most devious and disgusting of economical systems,
we’d all be plugged to the wall by now.
If this planet has any sort of a future it is Castro that we’ll have to thank for it.
I’ve noticed how former colonial states had mafia syndicates running the country. China was essentially run by triad crime syndicates before WW2 and Cuba before Castro was essentially a mafia economy.

Castro did what even Bill Gates can’t do. Own huge Caribbean island with vast number of cheap workers and servants. He didn’t even pay for it. Everything else (ideology and all isms) is besides the point. Now, think about it.
#26 i know full and well that Russia is not technically communist, nor is Venezuela. However Venezuela and Russia both have blatantly corrupt governments that practice cronyism and have both executed nationalization orders for important economic sectors. Although from a technical standpoint they may not call themselves “communist” they look like it and act like it so guess what? In my book they ARE.
@ jdizzle1337 Russia still has corruption but only had nationalisation order against Yukos when Khodorkovsky tried to bribe members of the Duma for control of major oil transport routes and oilfields and essentially have a monoloply on the major oil reserves. Why shouldn’t Russia nationalise its major oil reserves when its economy is based on it, it would bring more stability to the rubble and at least now tax money is now being pumped back into the economy not sythined out of the country into foriegn bank accounts.

You find it when googling the filename and then using the cached site. There are other History Channel Declassified shows on there as well.
