Halo 3 rakes in more than $300 million
Ok It’s a slow day and before I leave I just wanted to post this off topic news. (I know its a few days old)
Redmond (WA) – Halo 3 proves to be the cash cow Microsoft has claimed it to be. The game brought in $300 million in game sales within one week, and apparently contributed to doubling Xbox 360 console sales.
Microsoft said that Halo 3 has become the “fastest-selling video game ever” and already has its place among the world’s most successful entertainment products, at least from a revenue perspective. Microsoft did not say how many Halo 3 boxes were actually sold; estimates however put the game at about 4.5 to 5 million units within the first week.
In comparison, Halo 2, launched on November 9, 2004, sold about 6.4 million copies within its first two months of launch.
The company also said that more than 2.7 million gamers played Halo 3 on the Xbox Live network during the first week within launch, almost one third of the currently registered 7 million Xbox Live gamers. More than 40 million hours of Halo 3 game play were logged on the Xbox Live server in the first week. And apparently, the Xbox console itself also got the boost Microsoft had hoped for. “Initial reports from retailers worldwide show console sales have more than doubled compared with the weekly average before the launch of Halo 3,” the company said.
Halo 3 was released in 37 countries and 17 languages. To date, more than 20 million copies of the games in the Halo trilogy have been sold worldwide, Microsoft noted.

I’m starting to feel like the only one with a 360 who hasn’t bought this game.
What can I say, I just can’t do console shooters with those darn controllers. I’ve just been doing my FPS’s with the keyboard and mouse for too long.

If this is the first time you buy halo, it’s because of the hype. Console FPS games suck.

Ha, its suprising that someone is saying to buy something on here for once. Anyways I got the Legendary version and no matter what version you buy, this game is TOTALLY worth the money. Anyways, thats also because my 360 is one of the few systems I have that isn’t modded.
all hype just like bioshock . ok its a fun game to play but is it truly as good as HL2 ? i dont think so and i played both several times . People fail to see that the xbox360 has hardware failure on a timer , the new cooling system they are advertising is going to do no miracles because the mainboard is the primary fault , so unless they solve that issue , 3 red lights are still going to be seen eventually !!!

The sales of games outside US does not matter. Same as the Box Office (for Films).
The US sales alone is enough to keep XBOX rolling such that sales outside US is just complementary i.e. doesn’t really matter.

Have to say, loved Halo 1 up to a point (we all know what that point is now)
I got Halo 2 for free recently and it was cr@p. Free and I still don’t play it.
If 3 is along the same lines, what’s the point? They give out these huge stats when the game launches because of course ppl will be playing it.
But the mark of a good game is how long you can stay interested in it. Let’s see the play stats in 3 month’s time then judge.

Halo3 is a big disappointment. Gears of War has much better graphics and gameplay making it a real rough ride! And Halo3 is shooting with pink dots at a goofy looking and lame sounding enemy. That doesn’t suit me. These aliens look and act like Jar Jar from Star Wars: Phantom Menace. Seriously.. this game is so overhyped! Better try it out before you’ll spend some money on it.

it doesnt matter, you get used to playing on a remote you become just as good as anyone on a pc.

I love Halo but I have to agree it’s way over hyped. It’s not the best game ever. It’s just a very good FPS. Also for all you PC gamers, not sure about 360 but I know someone that bought an adapter to play Halo 1 and 2 with a keyboard and mouse.
I don’t find a problem with the controllers though, I just up the sensitivity alot and learn to adapt to it.

Halo is everything that is complete. And theres nothing to explain to all the skeptics. Its like the norm saying that weed is bad. But once you’ve tried and mastered it only then will you understand its addictive.

@ indianpunk and everyone else saying this: idk about the xbox, but i do know that on the ps3, there is a sweet controller that is half ps3 controller/half mouse, so it’s like point and click but with the basic ps3 buttons, really nice to play with…i’ll try to find a link for it…as far as halo3 goes, i beat it in a day, really not worth all that money IMO, just too easy, even on the hardest difficulty, it’s a better looking halo2.

once you get used to the button positioning, it’s really a breeze to play with…but again, it’s for ps3, so no halo on this one…try resistance, ghost recon, the darkness, or r6vegas with it. (most of the better looking fps games on ps3 are due near xmas time)…also, it is kinda pricey if you dont already have a ps3 and/or some of these games, i remember paying at least 100 bucks for that damn controller

I beat halo 3 the other night,it wasnt as great as i expected,but still fun nonetheless,the flood must die!I can see them making another halo edition,as the end was kinda weak,it wasnt as long a game as i thought it was going to be,if only microsoft would have waited closer to christmas for the release they would have made 600 million!the timing was off in my opinion.
Well for all what I’ve heard the game is good but not much above average.
The main weaknesses pointed out by the gamers were:
1. the game is quite short
2. there’s nothing new in comparison to the first two episodes

About the game. It seems just as overhyped as Bioshock. Halo 3 might be better though, but still doesn’t look that impressive. Somewhere between decent and good.

Actually what people don’t get is that this game is good overall.
Well maybe the story mode is a bit short but if you look at the Multiplayer aspects and its customization alone, man this game rocks the socks!
And when you put XBOX Live into it the concoction its just THE perfect Martini.

I bought 20 copies of this game. Then I went to the neared LAN party place, rolled out a large trash barrel, dumped the games into the barrel, poured gasoline on them and set them on fire. Little Halo3 bois were running outside screaming, “ZOMG. why u pwn h3? ur noob. h3 pwn you!”
I then proceeded to beat them until they stopped squirming or until their parents arrived to take them home so they could get ready for bed (which ever came first, usually the take them home bit).

I’m sorry but where money is important in terms of investment its the console system.
PC games do not make that much money. Thats why M$ delved into the console system, its where the consumer money is.

Honestly think it’s a poor game, played on the first one for a few hours a time for a few days every other week at a friends; didn’t even complete it, nor was I bothered about the second release and don’t care in the slightest about the third. For-sure it’s a kiddy version of a FPS.
Interesting news non the less. It’s simply a business venture now, pretty much like the Fifa franchise; It’s all about the money.
Grats to Microsoft yet again on making more money than then actually deserve. I’m really looking forward to the FPS’s which are being released in the next month(s) for the PC.

Anyone who plays it on XBox will automatically lose to people using keyboard and mouse(me). Thats why this game SUCKS, it’s too damned easy… Not to mention all the people that play it are CS kiddies/XBox fanboys.

People say they don’t like Microsoft because it’s the “cool” thing to say. They really have no idea why they don’t like them. Windows “sucks” is usually the response they give, while typing that from their Windows OS. Some use Linux, which is also a good OS but can’t run many things that people use frequently. I know as I have a send boot for Ubuntu, which is great, so is Windows.
I think people mainly hate Microsoft because they are a rich company, and it’s always fun to hate the rich companies. I’m guessing that 90% of the people on this site are running a copy of Windows in some shape or form while they “hate” MS. Rlslog folks could give the real stats on this, but I know for the sites I run, they are very tech based, and still yield 85% Windows OS’s, a few Macs and Randomly Linux versions, with 65% Firefox users.
So they sit and claim Microsoft sucks, while MS continues to put out things they want, and use daily.
Halo 3 is made by Bungie, Microsoft just purchased the company for profits. This happens with many large corps. because it’s good business practice. Just look at what IBM or Google purchases. It’s not like they run Youtube, they just own it. GM doesn’t run Chrysler, they just own it.
I suppose they’re ‘hating’ on the Xbox 360 then, which is a great machine for what it is and its price, but I guess it’s just not trendy enough to like Microsoft and what they make.
History of Microsoft X-box 360. original release date for the console was supposed to be a few months after ps3. Microsoft decides to push out their product early so that their sales wont be hurt by ps3 and their new technology. so Gen 1 x-box 360 has MANY problems like freezing up and overheating. not to mention that they still havent improved with their online free base play like ps3. so you look at the hardware of both systems. ps3 is better. not extremely better. but significantly better. Halo is a great game. but only for the pc. xbox is just… like windows vista. sucks…
IN MY OPINION. your money would be better spent buying a quad processor PC. Kill 30 birds with one stone.

Not only is the XBox360 a great product, and Windows is loved world-wide, but Windows Server 2003 is now one of the most widely used server O/S’s.
In addition, Office 2003 is the largest selling productivity software on the planet. Not to mention Visual Studio’s immense penetration in the development industry.

If you really are a fps fan, then you should never play halo,
1)shooters with extremely futuristic weapons and alien enemys are crap(give me counter strike, americas army,medal of honor any day);
2)anyone who plays fps in pc knows that people who play in consoles dont stand a chance against them.
3)the costumes are so lame(look like motoracers, and lame alien costumes)

yeah 100 dollars less for xbox but what if you play online alot. you plan on keeping it 3 years. then you lose out on the money you have to pay for xbox live. and the only reason windows is used so much worldwide is because microsoft buys out every competitor they can. the only ones who havent sold their souls to the devil are apple and linux. and i hope linux takes advantage of this new horrible mistake microsoft made making windows vista. windows vista is like the windows for people with ADD. how much of that bubbled up crap do you really need running in the background on your computer? NONE. all it does is take up valueable memory.
I’m not interested enough to read all of these comments, but I hope someone pulled my favorite FPS card “I think I van do better at shooters with two sticks” or “you just like the key/ mouse because you are USED to it”. I love that they can’t see the basic differences in controlling with a thumb on a stick versus a mouse with a whole hand and wrist. Amazing. I’m sure someone tried it, I think I’ll read them all just to see.
I find this game to be a very basic yet well done team shooter. I hope it does well ’cause my brother works for bunjie and makes $$ for every one sold. They market as well as anyone, gotta give them that.

really though….. if you really bought halo 3 and you didn’t like the online play, it’s because you suck. for the console its really good, because they don’t have any good fps. but in the pc its just another game, noting special. too much hype.
People who only play PC games shouldn’t give their opinion on console games. I only play console games so I say that all PC games suck. That’s just the way it is.

I’m assuming you haven’t used Vista, which has plenty of fantastic features. If you’re using an old dinosaur computer, yeah you’ll have memory problems. 2 gigs of DDR2800 Mhz ram you can pick up for 45 bucks. I think they made the right choice, make an OS that will last for the future. It’ll be hard for right now, but they’re not expecting to pop out a fresh OS every year. So yeah, your old crappy PC will struggle with your 1-2 gigs of RAM, which is why Vista supports well over that. I haven’t had a single problem and I have just 4 gigs of RAM, it’s not like RAM is super expensive or anything. You can complain and use your older OS that is missing plenty of great features (which you can disable if you don’t want them to be on) or just complain. You have chosen the latter
Apparently people have also forgotten about Microsoft Office, which is hands down the best office suite available. Open office (I have used this a few times when I don’t have Office on hand) just can’t do what office can. For a basic home suite, yeah it doesn’t make much difference. But when I use it at work, it’s bar none the best office suite there is.
I still won’t comment on Halo 3, I think Halo 1 was awful, Halo 2 was a waste of money, and Halo 3 seems to be the same. People in Austin are already re-selling on Craigslist for 40 bucks. Looks like I’ll wait a month and pick it up for half price as I’m a giant coop fanboy. Anything with Coop, I’ll play. If I wanted death match, I’d play a PC FPS.
I completely agree with everyone about PC FPS’s. I think there are just millions who never really played PC FPS games so don’t know that it’s just so much better. It’s also easy to get games for a Console because there is a set standard that all games are made on. You never have to look at PC Specs, you simply pick up a game and it (should) play.
All of the PS3 fanboys in here, you should probably read up on the it’s a better system deal. It’s missing quite a bit of RAM, and the little bit it does have, the PS OS takes up well more than the MS OS. I DO think the PS3 is a great system, I think they both are, but to say that it’s superior is a shortsite. There are plenty of bugs with the PS3, including that no one wants to write any games for the hard to code for system, so they port it and then the games just run poorly.
First, in the console world seems (so far) to be best. Come out with a console first and you’ll sell the games and get the majority of people. Sony used to know that.
aren’t games made to have fun ? i prefer gaming on the pc, but we’ve also bought the halo3 bundle (xbox360+game)and somebody here in our house is loving it.i’ve played halo3 on this xbox, and it isn’t that bad at all. the whole world knows gaming on pc is a much better experience but these consoles do what they have to do :give the player a good time. If the thing breaks down, so what? a 330euro xbox is stil cheaper than a 550euro 8800GTX which is outdated next year and can also break down or overheat. the consoles are perfect for those who play a few games/year, at least they last for a few years. A gaming pc has to be updated nearly every year if you want the best gfx (who doesn’t?) otherwise your beter off with a console. I still prefer my pc but i love seeing someone having fun while playing on any console.

And yes, Halo 3 is decent- not great, but for a cconsole game you can’t really complain. People who play console games can’t justify spending a good $5 plus grand on a up to date gaming computer. sorry PC guys but -honestly- would you really want everyone gaming on a PC? servers would crash, games would suck (due to low expectations from console gamers worldwide) and most of all: you wouldn’t have such a great time bashing consoles.
so, think about it in reality. Halo 3 = “Great” CONSOLE game.
PC gaming would go down the crapper if everyone ditched consoles.
