Over the years, the United States has sent many of its fine young men and women into great peril to fight for freedom beyond our borders. The only amount of land we have ever asked for in return is enough to bury those that did not return.

Why don't they take them back to the US? & what do the families think about this? It makes no sense to me…
Why bother shipping dead bodies or their parts back to the US? It costs resources especially when dealing with thousands or even hundreds of bodies. Regardless it's more fitting and potent reminder to the people that actually live or visit those areas to remember past mistakes and problems and how they were dealt with to learn from them (or not).

besides asking for land to bury the dead, i'm pretty sure they also ask for land to build permanent military bases? and the rights to develop oil fields? and afghan pipelines too perhaps?
