Half of Americans with broadband internet access

Nearly half of all Americans have broadband Internet connections in their homes, largely because of increasing use among minorities and the poor, according to an annual survey by the Pew Internet & American Life Project. The number of home broadband users nationwide now equals the total number of Americans with any type of Internet connection in 2000, the first year the survey was conducted. Four out of 10 African-American adults have broadband access at home, compared to 15% two years ago. Nearly one-third of rural Americans have home broadband connections, compared to about one-half of Americans living in urban areas and the suburbs.

“Income and race are becoming less important differentiators in U.S. broadband adoption,” states the Pew Internet Project, a nonprofit research center that examines the social impact of the Internet. Research from the Brookings Institution found that broadband usage is closely linked to U.S. employment growth, the Pew Internet Project notes. The Internet Innovation Alliance has urged government leaders to adopt policies and tax rates that encourage “investment and innovation in broadband technologies and their deployment.” Too bad other countries around the world are far away from 50% of home internet users…

I’m wondering if that can be true… I mean according to this article about 20% of the US had broadband in December 06:
    http://www.oecd.org/document/7/0,3343,en_2649_34223_38446855_1_1_1_1,00.html

That would have been quite some crazy expansion if it’s 50% now.

Can we stop having SO much mews CENTERED around the US of A? Canada, would be alittle more interesting (seeing as I live here) also Mexico and the South Americas.

in all of my years dealing with American Companies… they are Xenophobic and self-centered, catering ONLY to Americans and the Greenback.

time to grow up and realize that the rest of the world is not a footstool. Adapt or be excluded.

“Too bad other countries around the world are far away from 50% of home internet users…”

You’re not even on the top 35 list, so it’s a bit premature beating your chest and looking down on the rest of the world!

Great, even more illiterate, stupid, and ignorant people on the intarweb that shouldn’t be there.

At least in the past, the poor couldn’t afford it, which acted as a kind of minimal intelligence firewall (ie. if you’re poor it’s at least partially due to the fact that you were too stupid to do better for yourself). In a way, it kind of explains the massive increase of stupid lately.

Guys, correct me if Im wrong.
I\’ve heard somewhere that an internet would be still available if any catastrophe hits, even if a nuclear attack is launched.
    Is that true ?

I have to agree with D.A.R.K. For a site based on content; this
is probably the most racist site I’ve been to. Truth be told you’re the biggest idiots on the planet. It’s not about race, war, or what country you’re from. It’s about money. And until you understand that concept; People, businesses, corporations, governments, myself… etc. will continue to make money off your stupidity. So go ahead and make me more money.

Well, I think people are starting to realise what the American government has done to that country which is why USA is getting so much abuse.

So much media about global warming and such hitting the news it’s making people open their eyes about the rest of the world.

For instance, the past few days I’ve just found out New York city uses more energy than some African countries! And then they are preaching to the rest of the world to save energy- what a fuckin joke. Lets not forget Australians ONLY source of energy is fuckin COAL. So they are just as bad as any one.

Also just found out about the state of the Health System in the US. People are dieing because they dont have a fuckin free health service! And the insurance companies are not paying up when they should be! Unlike in Canada, France and the UK we have a free national health service! G.W.Bush can suck my twang the piece of shit. He’s fucked up that country damn right.

It’s not the Americans themselves we hate, I for one feel sorry for every American for having such a bad government.

Go watch Michael Moore’s latest film called Sicko. It’s an eye opener thats for sure. And fuck that Al-Gore Inconvenient Truth shit, lots of people saying the things he states are bullshit and are going to happen anyway.
