Hackers infiltrated Palin’s email account

Hackers have broken in to the e-mail of the US Republican vice-presidential candidate, Alaska Governor Sarah Palin. The hackers, who targeted a personal Yahoo account, posted several messages and family photos from her inbox. The campaign of running mate John McCain condemned their action as “a shocking invasion of the governor’s privacy and a violation of the law”. The hacking comes amid questions about whether Mrs Palin used personal e-mail to conduct state business. According to law, all e-mails relating to the official business of government must be archived and not destroyed. However, personal e-mails can be deleted. Mrs Palin is currently under investigation in Alaska for alleged abuse of power while governor.

A group called Anonymous has claimed responsibility for the hacking of Mrs Palin’s Yahoo e-mail. It posted five screenshots, two digital photos of Mrs Palin’s family and an address book to the whistle-blowing Wikileaks website. The information was taken from Ms Palin’s gov.palin@yahoo.com e-mail account. Subsequent investigation has shown that the gov.palin@yahoo.com account has been shut down along with another, gov.sarah@yahoo.com, also owned by Mrs Palin. It is not clear yet what methods the hacking group used to access to the e-mail account. The screenshots posted by the hackers reveal that they carried out the attack via a so-called proxy service to hide their tracks and limit the chance that they would be traced. Earlier in 2008 the Anonymous group launched several online assaults against the Church of Scientology.

    “a shocking invasion of the governor’s privacy and a violation of the law”.

    So when they do it, it’s protecting us. When we do it, it’s “shocking” and violates the law? Oh, how I do love double standards.

    Haha, hackers did it. The hackers of 4chan. I read they got in by answering her password recovery question correctly: “What is your ZIP code?” Very skillful hacking, that. And they used a proxy!
    Either way, this is probably going to be the perfect story to advance the Palin victim narrative McCain’s campaign has been trying their damndest to push the past few weeks. Shame.

    #2 - So, when the government takes my taxes and I don’t agree with the amount, does that mean I should just not pay them?

    What I’d like to know is when Obama’s and Biden’s accounts will be hacked in to…but something tells me that’s about as likely as Charlie Gibson grilling Joe Biden in the same manor he did Palin.

    @10

    Obama and Biden haven’t been accused of conducting government business using private email accounts and thereby circumventing state and federal laws. Obama and Biden haven’t been accused and are not under investigation for cc-ing non-governmental employees (namely Todd Palin, the governor’s husband) on state matters that are none of their business and over which they should have no influence.

    As for the Obama campaign being responsible… The citizens of Alaska, interested in finding out what shenanigans their governor has been up to in light of the current inquiry into whether or not she illegally used her office to pressure the state police into firing her ex-brother-in-law, are perfectly capable of “hacking” said email accounts. Especially now that she’s refusing to cooperate with the investigation when she promised she would before she was named as McCain’s running-mate. The citizens of Alaska have a vested interest in finding out whether or not Sarah Palin abused the power of her office to pursue a vindictive campaign of intimidation and personal revenge. If the only way to obtain these emails was by hacking her account before she deleted it and destroyed the evidence — more power to ‘em.

    @chris I sort of understand where you are going, but your analogy doesn’t reflect the statement you were addressing. You can’t parallel taxes with the invasion of privacy statement, two completely unrelated issues. As for the invasion of other candidate’s emails… do they have yahoo accounts? If so, I am all in favor of someone hacking them. I am not a hacker, but it seems to me that hacking an online email service would be easier than a personal service through say outlook.

    @roasted cashew, we care too much about money to be communism jr. I’d say we are becoming more fascist than communist. We are not a country about equality, which would be the concept behind communism. Communism is a concept that is supposed to transcend class, fascism is more totalitarian and class based.

    As far as this whole election is concerned, I’m sick of it. Screw Obama, Biden, McCain, and Palin. Rather than hear about how they are different than the other candidates, or who is more of a celebrity (Palin and Obama are about even in celebrity status now,) I would like to hear some solid discussion about issues. Give me a reason to vote for someone. I would rather a candidate tell me why I should vote for them, rather than why I shouldn’t vote for the other guy. I hear the beginnings of issues when these people speak, but nothing complete. Our government isn’t supposed to be about the party. In a true democracy, even a true representative democracy, it is supposed to be about which candidate fits the country’s needs best. Not which party fits our needs best. For all of you basing your vote solely on race, gender, political party, cutest couple, best hair, most houses and any other superlative that seams to fit my statement, you are the reason this country is failing. We, as a country, elected a man that, now, no party wants to associate with. We, as a country, are responsible for the next four years. Don’t place your vote on something superficial… I don’t think the country could take another four years of that. For everyone outside America, what do you think?

    @17

    Because the NY Times accuses someone of something does not mean it’s open hunting for hackers. I’m in no way condoning any illegal actions by anyone and if there is a crime then it should be investigated. My first analogy was rushed (at work), but maybe this one is more valid.

    Say the NY Times has an extensive article about a man in Mississipi who knows the whereabouts of Osama Bin Laden. Does this mean we, as the entitled citizens of America, have the right to hack into his life or maybe go as far as torture the man for information? You don’t prosecute someone of circumventing the law BY CIRCUMVENTING THE LAW. I know, you’ll say torture isn’t the same thing, but your conclusion was that if it was the only way, more power to ‘em. What the government does and what the people do to other people’s privacy are on two completely different planes. You can’t use one to justify the other.

    @psyclear
    My analogy was rushed (at work and annoyed), but I was going towards what I just said. Just as the issues I mentioned are unrelated, you can’t compare the actions of private citizens to the actions of a government. The fact that people hacked into the website where the hacked information was displayed has just furthered this comical episode.

    Got it, that was a bit more clear than the previous statement. To me, though, this whole election at the moment is a farce. I agree with you about the hackers being hacked… funny indeed.

    Maybe paranoia & conspiracy theory at this point & it doesn’t help that I’m just finishing Atlas Shrugged.
