    i dont understand what good can a hacker professionally do? besides stop another hacker. I think most semi-smart people know a hacker is just a hobby/profession that can belong to anyone. This movie is stupid its like if we looked at people who surf porn all day: "These porn watchers are people to, watch as they live their lives."

    @21 chelms,

    A professional hacker can do many things, one of the most common being that of testing security and seeing if they are able to hack into different sites. They then report back their findings and the company fixes any holes so it can keep hackers out. Things like that…

    They can also be in those competition's like the one's held by Apple, where whoever hacks the system first gets $1,000,000 or something…not really that much, probably like %10k, but it's still a pretty nice payday just for hacking.

    You younger 20-25 yr olds, need to REALLY lend respect to these people…….. yes i agree, hacking and being this unbalanced about life is probably not healthy nor productive….

    However SPARE a thought for the ERA we were brought up in, and you guys REALLY REALLY need to start lending us 28-30 yr olds some serious respect…….

    This site itself, would not exist if was not for our endless hardwork……. the technologies you take for granted, come from the sacrifice of MANY….

    I have to agree with Dean on this one, but go one step further and say look at those of us that grew up in the 80's where they had tv shows glorifying hackers as geniuses helping save the world *lol*. I am 36, when I got into hacking virus labs were barely beginning and it was considered a whole different group entirely (anyone remember H/P/A/V/C ?) In fact… if you are on a home computer right now and not feeding little slips of paper with punchholes in them into a giant machine that takes up half of your house or more.. you should be bowing, kneeling and scraping before hackers of the world for it is WE who advance technology. Were it not for hackers bugs wouldnt be found so rapidly, fixes and patches wouldnt be so prevalent, and technology would still be in the dark ages. You own your laptops to those of us who used to put desktops in vans and jerry-rig the powersupplies into an extra alternator on the engine for modular hacking.

    as for those windows haters, I will be the first to admit a good shell hacker is a great thing, and linux definitely has its uses as well as the open-source rule that governs the OS is a hacker way of life. BUT, thats as far as I will give you… Linux bites balls as a GUI based operating system, even with your WINE, you cant run as many apps and games as windows, OPENGL sucks major tool if they want to impress me make a port of directx (that works) and then maybe I will consider making the switch (but i doubt it since when windows BSODs you reboot and go ahead on.. when Linux crashes you reinstall because you computer is completely trashed. and what in the hell is it with linux and harddrives??? You install linux on your hard drive that has say two partitions… Linux repartitions the drive, you wipe the drive repartition and format, install windows and now windows thinks C: is E: ?!? what gives?!?)

    anyway… in conclusion… the hacker community isnt that snot nosed little 8 year old down the street that fixes your computer for you, or that 19 year kid that hates you and takes over your computer for kicks… its the backbone of our technology… if you dont like that go back to your damn playstation and stay off the net.. because YES, we created that too!

    Did you guys know that Apple founders: Steve Jobs & Steve Wozniak were phreaks? Phreak is a Phone Hacker. With the advent of the cell phone its really died down. They blue boxed (2600 hz tone played into the line). I used to hack VMBs.voicemail(meridian etc) to keep in touch with my friends(i was 12 at the time). Modems were measured in BAUD(how many state changes a modem makes per second not bps). Think of seeing ascii text one line at a time. I along with thousands of others(at least) hosted BBS's. There were elite BBSes that you had to earn respect to get in. Sound familiar to private trackers, ftp sites etc? Razor, Fairlight, Dream Team are the names I remember of notable warez scene releases. Myself and others in the H/P/C/A/V community ("the A stood for anarchy" lol) referred to them as Warez puppies. Look up BoW or Cult of the Dead Cow and read their stuff. Very funny stuff. I remember war-dialing, System 75's and hacking them.(They were awesome since you could set up a PBX with one) We were kids and a lot of the stuff we did then wasn't illegal. Phiber Optik got screwed. Kevin Mitnick was totally railroaded and unjustly imprisoned. I knew them both via IRC. What's funny is a lot of the majority of the best hackers got "arrested" only to find out years later that they got jobs at the NSA.
    The Computer Security industry was the salvation of most. It didn't take off until the first Internet Bubble of the late 90's.(I sold Yahoo stock at $400/share when I was just 18!)
    But there was a scene before this current one. The difference though is money was rarely involved in those days.

    And to Mr. OpenGL needs to port to DirectX: Your comment started off great why did you mouth off about something you didn't know anything about? lol. To clear it up OpenGL and DirectX are programming "Libraries" that interface with video cards. John Carmack of iD(Doom, Quake, etc) famously renounced DirectX. OpenGL is used more often in Movies for its accuracy. Early DX took a lot of short cuts and totally sucked before 9 IMO.
    Check out my old mag BoW. Brotherhood of Warez. Google it. :)

    Capt. Crunch did not invent the blue-box but found that in his box of Captain Crunch cereal there was a whistle which blew at ~2600 hz. So I've heard.

    Google the Hacker Manifesto.

    Once again, everybody dumb.

    I think the people most of you are thinking of are crackers - malicious people whose only intent is to destroy or break something. Hackers are people who just like to play with technology (or some other geek interest), they are the people who like to take things apart to discover how they work no matter if it voids their warranty, breaks a state law, etc.

    AFAIR a hacker once was somebody who programmed computers. and a hack used to be quick and dirty code as opposed to less error prone software engineering approaches.
    but things appear to change. see wikipedia - a hacker today can be just about anybody with above-average knowledge in any specific subject.

    @49:

    If you want to be specific the hacker term was coined at MiT by the model railroad society when a 'hack' was to take a pre-existing system and modify it in such a way that would evolutionize the process.

    @U4EA:

    I will admit i spoke out of turn concerning the DX/GL situation but I have yet to see an install of *nix that support DX and thus I cant play most of my games tru it despite WINE. Yeah i play alot of games sue me.. I do enough tech work AT work… I enjoy myself at home.

    I heard that story about the whistle as well never got it from the horse though… Never spoke with mitnick But i did chat with Sgt. Pepper more than a few occassions I am sure you knew of him as well. Insofar as the old BBS scene went yep been there done that in my C64 days (Image 1.1 was the best BBS software IMO although I love telegard as it was so easy to hack *lol*) Insofar as affiliations go I will just point to this, I was among the founders of T.E.W. / Renegade Legion (TEW was the front-end BBS for RL known to those who could get repped into RL as The Eternal War, a resource for digitized releases of Paramilitary and banned texts such as the anarchist's cookbook, Poor Mans James Bond, Uncle Festers etc)

    finally I am no stranger to the Mentor, and I agree more people should read his sermon.

    -E

    one final note: my first Mo/Dem was 150baud I get a kick out people when they refer to their cable "modem"s since its a falsehood the device is not a Mo/Dem

    Zombies are people too (almost).
    Pedos are people too.
    George W. Bush and Paris Hilton are people too.
    Apple users are people too.

    Food for thought.

    My definition of of hacking is this: to make an object do something it was originally designed NOT to do. Corporations like Apple, Sony, or Microsoft usually frown upon this kind of activity because often times you're taking their product & improving it's capabilities by freeing the object's of their "restrictions." Restrictions, that you would usually you have to pay for to be unlocked. It puts less money and less control in their hands. It puts the power back into the user's hands :)~

    @55 and israelis and nazis are people too even though one is the predecessor of the other. bottom line. no matter how evil/bad you think some people are, they are still people and it is the intelligent person who will bypass the scare mongering instilled by the goverment and the media to understand the motivation/reasoning behind people who may appear to make no sense to you. this is called LEARNING. most of us need to uneducate and re educate ourselves. some people follow religion blindly, others the media and government and sitll others, people who appear to have knowledge. Nothing is better than to ask the accused/discredited to explain themselves and their motives. this is the best way to learn.

    @62, what's so un-special about a bunch of 'cube guys'? That sounds like everybody I know. You probably could have been a bit more specific before dismissing the movie, doncha think?

    @71 Do you think the people you know deserve a feature length movie about them? I certainly wouldn't want to pay to see people like my coworkers on screen for 2 hours.

    Unfortunately I bought this dvd when it came out.
    It was a waste of money. The running time is only ~40 minutes and the content is so shallow it's laughable.
    I was expecting a overview of the hacker culture but instead was force fed opinions how they all adore each other. WASTE OF TIME!!!

    If you want some really good documentaries on the real hacker culture, I suggest;

    Triumph of the nerds by Robert X Cringley
    The history of hacking
    There are others, but these two stand out. Both of these are on Pirate Bay.
