Guy developed a real-life Halo suit

I’m pretty sure not too many our readers missed out on the famous Halo video game. Apparrently, a surplus of money, a crazy idea, and a love for this game can go a long way: Inventor (may be it would be better to simply refer to him as a “geek”) Troy Hurtubise has created an actual working Halo suit, one that seems to actually have all the bells and whistles as the video game version. It can protect the wearer from knives, bullets, light explosions, clubs, and even an elephant gun. You can breathe easy with the fresh air system run by solar panels in the helmet, and it also has morphine/salt containers, knife and gun holsters, emergency lights, a built-in recording device, pepper spray, and an ingestible transponder for when things are looking especially bleak.

He claims he could pump them out for the military for about $2,000 each. One of the reasons to make something like this was to protect Canadian soldiers in Afghanistan and US soldiers in Iraq. The suit weights about 18 kilograms and production costs reached almost $15,000. Yeah, it is very interesting, but there are better ways to spend your money…

it would be fun to see this ‘armor’ in action :D

they would be slow moving targets for the enemy, bot they probably would survive, except if they would heve fallen in to the water, then the suite would drag them down …

Sounds nice, but it lacks an 80 Gb mp3 player paired with a set of 800 Watt speakers, a mobile phone with 3G capabilities and a projector unit (for downloading and playing dvd rips on a nearby during those long and cold Baghdad nights).
A bulletproof pencil sharpener would be nice, too.

@ lee.. i would like to see you running with a suite like that on. look at his knees, he might not be able to bend them. the weight is also a “minor” problem. i’ll get you one if you can run a marathon with it ;-)

I have to agree with lee welton, it isn’t nothing to wear 18kg when it’s distributed all over your body.

I doubt this suit will be of much use when agility is needed but since you’re bulletproof then you don’t need to dodge that much bullets (except snipers :P)

lol @ badpunk, you weak pussy, I remember when I was attending officer school inthe Marines, We had to carry about 60lbs of sand in the pack while running and marching and carring one another for 10 miles each week, so yea, I would rather wear the halo suit any day.

The latest Interceptor Body Armor an average US soldier in Iraq carries ranges from 16 to 20 kilograms (and sucks donkeyballs to boot). If 18 kgs includes the helmet, it’s a friggin featherweight!

  12. January 15th, 2007 | 23:34

btw, Troy Hurtubise is also the guy who made an ‘invulnerable bear suit’, to study wild grizzlies.

    crazy guy…

haha, funny guy. but actually its probably not to shabby to use 18kg aint much as already said and using that protoype with real experimental military materials and one would get something pretty exeptional i guess

    January 16th, 2007 | 02:42

It does look cool, maybe not with that guy in it.. but hey.. he built it, why not be the one wearing it in the pictures? Neat idea, albeit you’d have to have A LOT of extra time and money, but as long as he’s doing it and not me, I do like to see the finished product.

Great, now he can invent the stormtrooper suit.

  19. timo
    January 16th, 2007 | 05:33

Somehow I just can’t believe that this armor does all it is said it does. 18kg is very little when considering protection from bullets. I just can’t believe it.

    January 16th, 2007 | 05:53

This is such bullshit… If you look into it you can find out that this guy also supposedly invented a machine that lets you see through walls and skin as if they were transparent. He also inverned “God Light” that is able to shrink tumors and cure parkinsons. Either this guy is the next einstine or hes a really good bullshitter.

A suit of chainmail armour weighs between 25 and 45 kg depending on the thickness and layer of rings. People used that for 500 years without complaining so 18 kg shouldnt be a problem.
Ive seen this guy before on some of those “crazy videos” programs. He calle dit a bear suit at first and built a whole lot of them. This is like te tenth version. The first were huge encumbering and heavy(around 40 kg) but worked. I saw hit take a big tree trunk to the chest, fly 30 feet and get up, unharmed.
This might well get into the military or police forces in time.

    January 16th, 2007 | 06:28

lol. that ssuit looks awesome though it reminded me more of Gears of War than Halo, but maybe it’s just because i’ve seen more of GOW than Halo lately so :P

And about the 18kg I don’t think that’s much to wear for some guy in the army, and I also read somewhere that a firefighter has to wear like rly much gear and it weighs alot but that’s a little off-topic maybe.

  23. Awesome-O
    January 16th, 2007 | 08:05

Thing about this suit is that he didn’t intentionally make it look like a Halo or GoW suit of armor. He just made it originally to protect himself from bears to study them. I read his Wikipedia profile and if half the stuff he says is true in his inventions, then he has some VERY interesting things coming up. If not, that sucks. But this suit did evolve from protecting him from bears, to HE ‘nades and rifle fire. So.. props to him. If he can save one more soldier over in Iraq, then I’m all for it.

“but I think there are also better ways of spending your money”
like spending all your money on a tracker and a news page, hosting traffic etc ? :)

sorry but i think being creative is actually one of the best ways to spend your money ;p and if you can actually run a business with it what could be bether ?

    January 16th, 2007 | 09:16

Nice, i would like to have one of these! The weight is not a problem, even the older types of bulletproof vest with metal plates inside are more heavy than this whole suit. And there is also nice psychological factor in it… either you will scare shit out of your enemies if you show up in something like this, or they will just die from laughing to what kind of robocop freak you are :)

  26. January 16th, 2007 | 09:23

How can he sell this shit (pardon me, suit!) to the military for $2000 each if the production cost was $15000??? The guy is not just a complete geek, he is also a fine businessman! haha

BabylonSoul, prototypes tend to cost much more, cause he didnt know how to build it did he? 18kg is very little, its like uhm 54 boxes of Coke(the normal small ones) strapped to your body for measure. kg is very europe ish, so i guessed coke boxes would be very international. 18kg would also be 3 michael jacksons

idiot i would resign dishonnerfully if I had to were that:P lol!! but, for the rest of y’all.. the standard backpack of a marine is 30KG, a stinger case is 65Kg when they can carry that;) wat problem would it be to carry 18 Kg;)

  33. Awesome-O
    January 17th, 2007 | 03:35

@blabla, You should be “resigned dishonnerfully” for saying and spelling “Dishonorably discharged” like you just did. But, I doubt that you’re even in the military, so it’s really not an issue. The one thing you ARE right on is that 18Kg would be nothing to a person in the military, they have to deal with much more than that on a daily basis.

Chainmail armor for 500 years..? Yea whatever, dickweed. The thing is 500 years ago there was no assault rifles and very very little need to move quickly from cover to cover.

What really bugs me is how you take a piss or a dump in that thing…? (Fallout, anyone? :) )

  37. phishybongwaters
    January 31st, 2007 | 17:48

Prolly the same way you take a shit in a spacesuit.

You piss into a bag shoved up your dick. You would probably have a similar setup for ass leaks, better hope it aint stinky.

I get a kick out of some of the posts here, there have been methods to see through walls and skins for oh what 30 years now? Google it.

18k is nothing, and with todays composites, very easily as strong as he claims. I saw a discovery show about the original bearsuit (made fun of it on the simpsons) and the guy is the real deal.

As for the price, the prototype of anything always costs a fortune. Some prototype cars cost millions but the car is sold for 30 grand.

The huge pricetag for the prototype also takes into account from start to finish the design and testing phase. It cost him 15000 total, that 1 suit might only cost 2000 to manufacture.
