Guild Wars passes 5 million players

Not only World of Warcraft rules the MMORPG world. Korean MMO giant NCsoft has this week revealed that its best-selling Guild Wars free-to-play online game has now passed 5 million sales. This covers the original Guild Wars, plus the Factions, Nightfall and Eye of the North expansions. The MMO kicked-off in spring 2005, and given its fantasy theme, it has done rather well to rack-up 5 million sales in the face of competition from you know who. No monthly subscriptions are required for Guild Wars, and the game offers an appealing alternative to the usual grind of persistent world titles.

“Reaching the five million mark is extremely gratifying for us at ArenaNet because it shows the hard work and dedication we put into our games has resonated with the fans,” beamed Mike O’Brien, co-founders of developer ArenaNet. “We are committed to supporting all of our Guild Wars players, and at the same time, we’re extremely excited to work on the game’s evolution. Certainly the future of Guild Wars is as bright as its past and present.” Guild Wars 2 is on the way also, having been unveiled last year. 5 million is still far cry from Blizzard’s 10 million monthly-paying players of WoW, but it’s an impressive number as well.

it was a very addictive game, but after a few months, you come to your senses and realize games in this genre are a waste of your life.

PS: World Of Warcraft is the worst, monthly subscriptions???

You can buy a new computer with that sought of money…

i play the nightfall expansion, and its pretty cool. If WoW decide to get free online play than I’m all theirs lol!

The good thing about Guild Wars is that not only is it free online, its pretty cheap to buy the game.

Which is much different from WoW, where its expensive enough in stores to buy, but then you also have to pay to play it online, which is ridiculous!

Ah, I love GW. Played and finished all 4 games. Played WoW for about a year; much prefer GW’s get in and fight to WoW’s faffing about.

    I can’t wait for GW2.

Read their 5 Million claim carefully. Sales of all releases. That doesn’t mean how many are currently playing, but sales of the all four releases. That’s not so much any more. WoW has 10 Million SUBSCRIBERS, right now, paying monthly. 5 Million total lifetime sales, who cares, meaningless number.

Indeed, ScytheNoire read my mind. With all these releases totaling 5 million in sales, this is paltry compared to the current 10 million for WoW. This isn’t including anyone who has either quit playing or is as I like to say in between playing. You figure more people bought the base game, probably three or 4 times as many that bought all three expansions as well. The fact that WoW costs money and still has, I would wager at least 4 times the current players is only a testament to its power. All your MMO are belong to us!

5million sold copies vs 10 million active players…

yeah, cant even compare those numbers.

and GW aint even a MMO. They even said so themselves.

As for paying the monthly fee, well, it has to do something,
as WoW has double the playerbase of the total amount
of sold units, including the expansions for GW.

    Anywho, each to their pwn.

No one plays GW anymore that isn’t a chump. Played it since the beta test and was in one of the top guilds, then the expansion came out and everything started to suck. Recycled skills, added no new equipment worth a crap, and the lack of an early game for the expansion = Boredom.
Everyone remember the 50hp monk build? Fun times.

Guild Wars is a mixed bag, the PvE is not as good as WoW, but the PvP is where its at with Guild Wars, it is superior to WOW.

    @ 16

Of course it’s an MMO! But as “they said”, it’s not a MMORPG.
And they said so because we all know how the MMORPGs play, it’s the same thing in every game.
But not this game, oh no. You can’t compare this to WoW, that’s just wrong.

    February 28th, 2008 | 21:40

I don’t see anywhere where NCsoft is saying they have 5 million players, it’s Martin that put the word players in there. NCsoft said they’d sold 5 million copies.

Also WoW doesn’t have 10 million people paying a monthly subscription. It only has 4 million in the West doing that. The players on the Asian servers use a pay as you play method of payment so it’s pretty impossible to track if they’re truely active.

Not that it really matters in the end, both are mindless, boring, epeen contests where the only skill involved is the amount of time you can play. PvP is completely pointless as it’s based around your gear which is based around your play time. It’s beyond me that people actually take pride from pooring their whole lives into this crap.
