GPS tracked express pizza delivery

This is a guest post by RLSLOG reader Hemant Sahi.

Picture this: you order a pizza and you’re really hungry but you have no idea how long you’ll have to wait. Couple of minutes later, your stomach starts to growl twice as loud and you start cursing the guy who’s working his ass off to get your high fat-low nutrition junk food to your doorstep. So, how do you settle your unsettling stomach and your throbbing desire to shoot down the pizza guy? Well the answer, like always, is GPS tracking. As if it isn’t hard enough to try and eat low-calorie foods, pizza chains are starting to attract customers by offering GPS technology so we can track the progress of how our pizza order is going. An 11-store chain of Papa John’s restaurants in northern Alabama have been using an online-tracking system created by a startup business called TrackMyPizza. In this case, customers can watch online as their deliveries move street by street to their front doors.

Domino’s, on the other hand is planning to allow its customers to go to its web site and see when their pizza has been prepared, cooked and sent out the door. But, alas, there’s no tracking of the pizza delivery driver. According to Information Week, the TrackMyPizza company and technology was developed by two telemetry scientists who spent 10 years tracking U.S. military missiles, but they’ve gone from war and peace to a piece of the pizza pie. These two guys, Randy Younger and Ken Blankshain, are looking into other tracking possibilities. They own the URL, TrackMySchoolBus.com, which I suppose will attract a lot of worried parents whose lives are made hell from running down the street, dragging their kids behind, screaming, “For the love of everything holy, I beg you, wait up!”

This may seem amusing and funny on first thought, however every day we lose our anonymity and privacy more and more with crap like this. Not that there’s necessarily an issue with this specific use of tracking someone, but some of the newer technology like this is being used in questionable ways.

Sweet now I can track other peoples pizza and steal them…. ok now… seriously, this is really stupid. A pizza does NOT need a GPS signal.

Cool Idea, its gonna make money. But in my opinion so unnecessary! I mean comon now, do you really have that much time on your hands to sit there and watch your pizza drive itself down the street? I guess if your bored, its great… otherwise useless! Although Im sure Im going to try it once, if ever available in my area. The domino’s pizza tracker is kinda neat.

I’ve delivered for Papa John’s and augh, just let me say, this is pretty dumb. Sometimes we have to deliver 3,4 pizzas at once so we’ll be going all over the map. All that gps tracking is going to do is lead to even more customer b!tching like boo hoo hoo why didn’t u deliver to my house first and such. Terrible idea.

dominos already has a similar “tracking” system. when you order from their website it tells you what stage your pizza is in.. from prep, bake, box then deliver. no gps tracking but there’s something comforting about knowing your pizza is in the oven..

guess papa johns had to go one better…

lol! I have to agree. Really, what is the point of tracking your pizza? If you want it that bad, call the order in and go pick it up yourself. That’s what we used to do in the 60s – before everyone got lazy and started asking for delivery. In fact, picking up the pizzas and watching the old Italian men who were making them toss the pie dough in the air and catch it was half the fun of getting the pizza in the first place!

Nothing new. Think about a thing like lowjack that has been around for years, the only difference being the use of another type of technology. Thing is, lowjack is actually usefull and this pizza-nonsense isn’t.

Also, it’s a badly written article. The intro is way to big compared to the actuall body and message of the text. Don’t give up your day job as tech support Hemant Sahi!

Here in england, the coachcompany I use have had a system like this up and running for about 18 months. Go to thier website and you can see on a map exactly where the coach you are waiting for is. They even a PDA friendly version which I access through my Blackberry.

The only slight fly in the ointment with this is they update it every 2-3 minutes so you think your coach is about half a mile away, slow down as you walk the last 100 yards up to the stop and it shoots past you, slows down sees no one there (doesn’t bother to look in his mirror to see the moron running down the street waving his arms) and drives on !

If you can’t be bothered to drive to a pizza stop, why the hell would someone be bothered to keep getting up to check the website.

You phone…wait….scratch your balls….they the door bell goes. Easy

yea in my experience of pizza delivery its always the drivers fault,ie forgets the drink or garlic bread. He gets lost if its delivered at night so i have to get him directions.Probably pays to go pick up anyway. We had a fishnchips night at work today and we all gave $5 but some people missed out on fish and too many chips were ordered, just as well the fanta drink was their.I couldnt hardly wait till till time so hungry.

    @37

Your jealousy is showing. Stop complaining about what America has that your country doesn’t and build up your own country (without begging for handouts from other wealthier nations which is self-destructive) so that you can be fat and lazy too.

Really, if you can’t be bothered to create your own parade, do the world a favor and stop trying to rain on ours. If your poor and hungry die, it’s your own look out. They are, after all, your fellow citizens, not mine.
