Got Promoted!
I hate to look like an attention whore, but I thought I might ask the readers of RLSLOG their opinions. I’ve just been given more rights on this site, meaning that I can now edit all posts on the site and a few more things that are actually not interesting for you at all.
What does this mean for you, the readers? I’ll now live up to my promise to add mini-reviews to posts of movies and games that I’ve seen and played. Now, obviously, you’ve got web sites that are completely dedicated to this, which is why I’ll try to keep my reviews as neutral as possible. Instead of saying: “Well… It wasn’t very good,” I’ll keep everything genre and fan-base specific. So when a new Lindsey Lohan movie is released and I accidentally downloaded and watched it and I totally hated it, I’d still sum up all the positive aspects of the movie as well as clarify that the movie is aimed at 12 year old girls. Same thing goes for games.
Welcome aboard Scit, I’m Dutch too so I figure we’ll get along quite nicely.

@Amperage: Gay doesn’t directly refer to homosexuality any more, not when used in other ways anyway. But Z wasn’t referring to something positive as being gay, he probably thinks the Dutch are gay or something.

@Maik: Hey man, I’d LOVE to. But Martin has a faster way of checking for the latest torrents. Being his NewTorrents moderation page or something. By the time I see a new torrent and I head out to RLSLOG to start posting the damn thing has JUST been posted like 5 seconds ago.
Maybe Martin will one day give me that kind of access to NT but I don’t see him trusting me with THAT kind of power just yet.
And for all the people who want to see a RLSLOG forum, this was one of the first things I asked Martin when I got on board of the RLSLOG crew! But he told me that having the NewTorrents forums are enough. I hope he changes his mind soon. Hell if he’d give me FTP access to this host I’d set it up within 1 minute but alas, it’s not up to me. (Alas… I’m gonna use that a lot more from now on. ‘Cause it just sounds so damn intelligent.)
And Kevins comments sum up his age. If we wanted a review website we’d go to a review website although RSLog is getting more and more like it everyday with reviews to movies that dont even have a torrent.

I personally would welcome reviews of games and movies, if accompanied by a link to torrents and maybe a screenshot or two, saving users having to go look for torrent links.
I don’t think being neutral is the way to go though as everyone is influenced by their opinion anyway and i would rather read a real opinion than just a spiel off the back of a DVD.
If there is the option to comment on your reviews, people would be inclined to share their views on the game or movie too so anyone reading would get a host of opinions, which can be pretty good when you aren’t sure if you should buy/acquire something.
The reviews will be edited into the posts! So no extra posts.
I would like to see a forum added… but I really REALLY hate it when it starts to have very stupid rules like no external links, cannot mention copyrighted stuff no requesting basically red tape bullshit which I saw on NT forums.

As a response to the gay thing. Here’s my personal take on the issue.
Just because there’s a lot of people who say it doesn’t mean that it’s right. Even if not said in a hateful way, with no intent of looking like a real ignorant dumbass, using the word “gay” in a negative way contributes to make it just another generic hate term that people constantly use. It only shows one’s lack of vocabulary and education, alias ignorance. Following that logic, Americans tend to be the most ignorant of all. You could compare it to the blacks that call each other “niggers” or “niggas” in a friendly way. It is not intended to be negative, but if repeated many times, it is more than enough to irritate some people. I won’t talk about the fact that white men don’t have the right to say it.
The main difference between the use of the n word and the use of the term “gay” is that the latter seems to be far more accepted on a wide scale, despite being fairly recent (as compared to the n word). There doesn’t seem to be such a taboo surrounding those homophobic terms as there is with the “n word”.
My opinion: The editors of RLSLOG wouldn’t accept someone calling someone else a “nigger” for absolutely no reason? Then it shouldn’t be accepted when a user writes “gay”, “fag” or “faggot”, “faggy”, “queer”. Imagine how gay niggers must feel when they browse this site. I love RLSLOG and I don’t want it to become a troll hive.
And no, the Dutch aren’t “gay”, they’re hot.
@Dakins: That was a very interesting read, thank you, you just made my day and it’s 5:30 (AM) over here. Anyway, “gay” has become accepted just like the “suck”. Like you can say “Aw man that sucks!” pretty much anywhere nowadays and no one will feel offended. Go back 20 years ago and you were really offending people because it obviously refers to oral sex. No one thinks about oral sex when using “…sucks” because the definition of the word has changed. Not in the dictionary, but for the common people. Also, the N word is and has always been a direct discrimination against blacks, whereas “gay” means all kinds of things now. There is not one way to use the N word in a positive way, although some blacks would disagree with me on that. You can say “That’s gay!” just like you can say “That sucks!” and no one is offended. At least that’s how I see it.

A lot of people get offended by the use of the term gay. And I still believe that there is no way that you can say that “something is gay” to make someone know that you like something. You argument was that “gay” is a neutral term. That is wrong. It is still widely considered a hateful term towards homosexuals and there is enough pointless gay-bashing nowadays to allow such terms on a relatively open-minded website. As far as I know, no one here openly admits being homophobic, but I am sure that many users (including the editors, who knows) really do have an unfounded hate towards gays.
Basically?
Using gay as a noun = neutral.
Using gay as an adjective = negative.
Please, just because you are allowed to say doesn’t mean that you have to do it (or abuse it, which doesn’t seem to be such a big deal in your case). And if you do not agree with me on this, since I believe that my arguments were fair and that they would be widely accepted in a real-life debate, I’ll start thinking that you hang around underground Nazi clubs in your free time (just kidding)
P.S.There have been a few articles with pictures of naked girls or links to porn trackers lately and that’s alright. I do not confound “straight pride” with “gay hate” and I’m just stating the facts, not passing judgement based on one’s sexual orientation.
@Dakins: It’s obvious why you think so black and white about this subject. Where ever you live, this is how most open minded people think. Here in The Netherlands we have this TV show starring two homosexuals and they often (not all the time, so it’s not the reason why the show is so big) make gay jokes and they call each other fags and stuff like that. I’ve had a few gay teachers that made fun of their own sexuality so I guess down here it’s OK to use the word “gay”. IN FACT, since most of The Netherlands has broadband and most of those people actively go to English forums and play online games, people actually use the word “gay” mixed in with Dutch.
A lot of English words that just sound right are used in Dutch nowadays, including “gay”. It’s just like that PSP ad some time ago where a white women was standing over a black women and everyone was like “OH MY GAWD DATS RACISME!!” whereas here in the Netherlands we had the same ad campaign and no one said a freakin thing until we saw the news posts on the net, and after reading those we just had a good laugh while all of America was going nuts. Kinda like that Hot Coffee thing too. And a lot of other things that we don’t even care about until other countries start making a big deal out of it.
Shit, I’m from the country that was the first to allow gay marriage. Trust me I’m not homophobic. But I’ll be honest and I’ll admit that every time I see a male gay couple kiss each other I just feel like I have to look away… I just can’t stand looking at it, I don’t care whether they do it or not, just don’t do it right in front of me… Please?
I would like to justify the comment I did on Americans being “intolerant”. While I was being ironic in my statement, it was a bit uncalled for.
I have been an admin on a fairly large sci-fi themed board for a bit more than two years. During the timespan I spent reviewing posts and banning users, I came to my own conclusions regarding the troublesome users. I don’t have clear statistics to post, but I’d take a guess and say that around 85% of the users I have banned were Americans. The control panel has a nice option that puts a little flag of the country that the user is posting from next to their name. The troublemakers, the flame-war starters, the most generally immature and intolerant (and I daresay intolerable!) users were from the USA. Not saying that ALL Americans are like that, just saying that I’ve never had any kind of intelligent discussion with an American. On the other hand, I get along very well with some of their Canadian neighbors.
Along with the other admins, I have taken dispositions against this kind of users. Our board is now restricted to 15 years old and up as the younger users seem to be especially problematic.
Yep, the younger ones are ip-banned until their 15th birthday (a few ones, that I know personally, were spared). Nope, I have no remorse. Call me a nazi, but our board is now healthier than ever. Since these measures were taken (September 06), our amount of members has doubled. The immature fucks were scaring the older users and potential users away. Overall, the board is now much more mature (no more PSP vs DS topics, thank God) and everyone’s happy, except for the little pricks that were blocked out from our peaceful virtual land of grace and harmony.
But the main point is that those troublemakers were, for the most, from the United States. I’ve also banned a few Europeans, mostly from the United Kingdom. Not a single Canadian in the whole bunch.
I believe that one’s own level of intolerance and ignorance has a lot to do with the culture of the country that one lives in. And in the “Land of the Free”, culture appears to be a bit fucked.
This is my argument on what I said, and I would like to apologize to all Americans that aren’t pricks.
I have nothing against the dutch! You guys have chocomel and coffee shops where one can by weed. For that, I am most grateful for NL. I do have something against nerdy boys who think a news blog is a huge achievement. Go get laid! I mean, I appreciate the effort but it’s not all there is in life! As long as you don’t make posts about those god awful trance mix CDs, I promise not to bitch anymore.

I’m glad to learn that you are not an intolerant person. I used to have a friend who was extremely scared of getting “raeped up teh butt” by a gay man. Like a good amount of straight guys, he believes that gays are all rapists and he also associates homosexuality with child molestation, bestiality and pretty every fucked up sexual fetish there is out there.
That one time, one of his college teachers openly admitted being gay in front the class. He walked out and never went back to that course. When I asked him why he did that, he told me that he was afraid that his teacher would stalk him and try to break into his house during the night to tie him up and rape him. He then said that gays were a threat to society and that we had to line them up against a wall and then invite the rest of the population to shoot them with automatic weapons.
I was profoundly shocked by what he said so I just told him that he was a fucked up freak and that I wouldn’t have time to talk to him anymore.
I guess I just believed that it was impossible to have sucha backwards attitude

@Dakins: I totally laughed my ass off when I read that post about your old friend. My dad is kinda like that too, I guess it’s just something heterosexuals prefer to see in homosexuals. “If it’s not weird to be gay, then you must be weird in some other way when your gay.” Meh, I don’t respond to such people ’cause you know that no matter what you say they’ve already heard it and they just don’t care.
