Google’s take on Kindle: 500,000 free books

If you have a Sony Reader, you have a lot of reading to catch up on. Sony Electronics has struck a deal with Google to distribute half a million titles through the Sony eBook Store — for free. The books, all published before 1923 and now in the public domain, were digitized by Google as part of its Google Book Search program. Sony will offer them alongside the 100,000 or so books still under copyright that it sells through its eBook store. It’s already possible to download public domain books from Google Book Search as PDF files and copy them onto a flash memory card for use in e-readers such as Sony’s, but this partnership will simplify the process for users by integrating it into the eBook Library Software for PCs that ships with the Sony Reader. The service won’t give Reader owners free access to the much greater number of books still in copyright, many of which Google Book Search has already digitized, however.

To access the public domain books, owners of Sony’s PRS-505 or PRS-700 readers will need to install the PC software and create an account on the eBook Store if they don’t already have one. Owners of the older PRS-500 are out of luck, though: the service won’t work with that device. The expanded library won’t address one key difference between the Sony Reader and Amazon’s Kindle e-readers: the Amazon devices don’t need to be tethered to a PC to download and install new books. Instead, the Kindles download books over the air via Sprint Nextel’s 3G (third generation) mobile network. However, the wireless technology Amazon has chosen for the Kindle — and the Kindle 2, released Feb. 9 — is little used outside the U.S., and is incompatible with mobile networks in Europe and most of Asia.

Amazon has a selection of new titles that puts sony to shame. The only problem is that a lot of the books I enjoy are not distributed via e-book. And I live in Alaska, so the wireless downloads for the kindle wouldn't work since they are contracted with Sprint, which doesn't offer service here. Otherwise the Kindle would be worth the 350$ they are robbing people for.

just what everyone has been screaming for: more books out of print since 1923…

the kindle's selling point is the availability of newly released and current best selling books at far less than the hardcover price (usually $9.99).

adding a half million books that nobody wants to read, really offers Sony reader owners nothing, but it sounds good on a slow news day.

@1, What are you saying? If it's "Awesome stuff" and it's FREE, what do you mean you don't trust Google??? Do you think they're going to pick your pocket while you're reading one of their FREE books? Some people just waste bandwidth and don't have anything to say.

Turns out you can't use these as regular books in readers (such as stanza for iphone) since they are PDF images rather than text. You can, however, read them via mobile safari at books.google.com

    Very cheeky, Google!

Anything can take on Kindle. Its black and white and bulky as hell with proprietary formats. This is a given!

for all you people without iphones or kindle/sony readers but have cell phones (likely every one of you excluding the above for mentioned)you can read moblie ebooks with a handy program called mobipocket, very easy to use and has a huge range of compatibility with most cellphones. it can be found at mobipocket.com and via torrentz for a cracked version (may not be required, i forget as its been a while) Also @bingo seach ebook or the author title and BLOG via google ;)

Project Gutenberg has been doing this for decades and didn't even need some two bit deal over a third rate reader to get involved.
