Google’s Sergey Brin books $5m space flight

Google co-founder Sergey Brin has made a down payment of $5m to book a trip to the International Space Station. Brin has joined with commercial space flight company Space Adventures in a new programme in which individuals reserve a spot on a future orbital flight. The 35 year-old will be the first member of Space Adventures’ Founding Explorer group. The six members will each pay $5m and receive first access to future orbital space flights made by the company. It is estimated that the total cost of the trip could be in the region of $35m for each member. “We are very proud to have Sergey Brin lead this effort as the first Founding Explorer,” said Space Adventures president and chief executive Eric Anderson.

“For successful executives, investors and entrepreneurs who want to travel to space, and want to invest in a future space mission slot, this is an excellent mechanism to preserve the option for a once-in-a-lifetime adventure.” The Google co-founder will become the latest technology kingpin to take to space. Virgin founder Richard Branson has long been involved in space exploration efforts, while former Microsoft executive Charles Simonyi paid $20m last year for a trip to the International Space Station. Brin will also have the option of selling his spot on the future mission should he choose. “I am a big believer in the exploration and commercial development of the space frontier, and am looking forward to the possibility of going into space,” he said.

    He didn’t “book a $5m space flight”, he booked a ~$35m space flight. Still, RLSLOG isn’t bad for a blog run entirely by 13 year old foreigners.

    Yea, he gave a $5mil deposit for a $35mil spot. One thing I don’t understand is, why go through all that when he can take a flight right now at half the cost ($20mil) through already proven Russian program.

    They want to promote this Space Adventures company.The Russian program doesn’t figure into it.

    As for his trip he still has to qualify by making it through basic astronaunt training and what are the chances of a scrawny little Jewish guy doing that? He’ll most likely sell his trip and never speak of it again, it’s free publicity for google and Space adventures regardless.

    @14 – Zach Braff.

    Good on him, I’d do the same sort of thing if I had that much money that I couldn’t possibly spend it all in one lifetime (spend, not waste/gamble).

    Might as well live life to the fullest.

    I hope they blow up on take off. What an incredible waste of money so one filthy/greedy rich man can satisfy his desire to “float around in space.”

    btw, 16- if we had money like that, most of us would probably spend it on things much worse.

    Ahhh…. RLSLogKing.
    Three kinds of people in this world. The haves, the have-nots and those who are that are so incompetent/lazy that they will never make it to the haves and so they go out of there way to criticise those that do.
    They had an idea, worked hard on it, built their company up to be worth $30b+.
    Maybe they should give it all away, instead of just the millions that both they and the company donate to charities and causes each year?

    Would that make it all better for you? Make that chip on you shoulder a little smaller?

    If they had any imagination they’d start their own space company, $35 mil would be a decent start! the google lunar x prize is only $30 mil cheap ba$tards! Just like jeff bezoz both are waiting for smarter people to do the grunt work before piling their money in no doubt.

    What are friggin waste of money. It makes me sick seeing people blow money like that when there are people around the world who can’t even afford to EAT. And I don’t care what it is, but if you spend that kind of money, and it’s not required for your survival, then its a waste, since those people without food NEED it for their survival.

    @ berkut

    Actually I think the Russians announced that there discontinuing there current manned space program because there recieving more money from the government so they dont need to depend on this for finacial support anymore.

    Actually I dont think he likes Russia much as he alleges his family left Russia due to anti-semitism, which is odd since communism was installed in Russia by 300 New York Jews and financed by the powerfull Schiff/Rothschild jewish banking dynasty.

    Actually why would you wont to pay that much money to go to the spacestation theres nothing up there, after an hour you would be pretty board. They should just make a fake spacestation on a movie set with stars and that in the background like the US did with the Apollo moon landing.

    Imagine what it would feel like if you paid 35 million dollars to go to space but when you get there something goes wrong and the spaceship breaks and catches on fire. I’d be thinking “I wish I spent it on high class hookers and blow instead”

    @18
    You incompetent worthless fool. Is that your “theory” on life that you fall back to whenever you disagree with someone? LOL…those who think life is all about sizing one’s self to others based upon accomplishments are no better than a pack of apes.

    “The big ape looks poorly at the little ape, and dislikes the biggest ape because its bigger.” That’s your life. But in most cases the “little ape” just likes to swing through the trees, wild and free, paying no attention to you, and you HATE it.

    Now think, if you can, the money this greedy man is using could be put toward space/rocket research. That would serve a far better purpose than spending more than 1,000 of people life incomes on a “fun space ride.” If the cost of such an expedition where 200,000 I would not mind at all. But to spend what that man is spending on HIMSELF ALONE so he can float in space is disgusting.

    … on that note, 35 million for space travel …. how much did he have to pay for zach braff’s face ?? (although it looks like it couldn’t have been too much :-) )

    also…. 35 million dollars could feed a looooot of people. However, it is his money and his decision how to spend, regardless of whatever we think would be the most sensible use for it.
    it is noble of people to donate money, yet you can’t expect them to…
