Google offers paid storage for GMail

Just hours after Microsoft pushed its new SkyDrive online storage option out the door, Google announced its own new storage options. There have long been rumors that Google would eventually offer some sort of “GDrive” for online backups of data, and while this may not be what many people had in mind, it’s certainly a step in that direction. The big catch for many people will be that the new storage options aren’t free. In fact they aren’t exactly a bargain either. here’s a price breakdown:

  • 6 GB: $20 per year
  • 25 GB: $75 per year
  • 100 GB: $250 per year
  • 250 GB: $500.00 per year

The average price hovers around $2-$3 per gig per year, which is about $1 more per gigabyte than purchasing an external drive and over a $1 more per gigabyte than Amazon’s S3 service. Amazon’s S3 service offers storage at about $0.35 per per gigabyte a month (technically it’s $0.15 a month for storage with a $0.20 per GB for data transfer, and that additional data transfer fee can add up if you make your documents public). But Google’s new storage options are really aimed at a different market — namely users with overflowing Picasa or GMail accounts. Picasa already offered additional storage through fee-based premium accounts, but those will be replaced with these new integrated storage plans. Still, I think it’s pretty much worth it if you have thousands of emails in your mailbox and don’t want to purge them all.

Ali, You can never have too much though.

Thats like saying Microsoft should offer their OS for free, because they don’t “need” the money.

well i think that simply for the fact that GMail filters almost 99% of spam they deserve it – and you would need to be a really hardcore user to go over these 3 gigabytes which are offered for free…

Google is starting to annoy me.

My start page is now :
http://www.blackle.com (and i even used firefox to block their logo)
result: a nice dark homepage with no ads but the same search results.

And as for Firefox, I may even swap over to Kameleon soon.

You people aren’t getting the point – it’s not just about the storage, its about storage *with* management.

The storage itself isn’t a big deal. It never was. Sure, initially when GMail was launched with 1GB space, it did catch everyone by surprise. But once everyone got used to having lots of space around, we all quickly realized that GMail is much *much* more than just large space.

What matters today is how best you can organize your data, how fast you can access it, how easily you can get the precise information you want, not to mention weeding out unwanted data. Why do you think people prefer GMail over Yahoo! Mail (which is providing unlimited storage)?

Also, Google’s storage is shared between all their servies, like Picassa, GMail, etc. It’s also not just the storage, its the integration of all their services that make them so convenient to use.

Getting a rapidshare account or a large disk just isn’t the same.
