Google offers $10M for world changing idea

Google Inc., which is celebrating its 10th birthday this month, today unveiled a $10 million effort to implement ideas that can “change the world by helping as many people as possible.” As part of the Project 10^100 (pronounced Project 10 to the 100th), Google plans to ask its users to submit ideas until Oct. 20 for ways to improve people’s lives. Google will choose what it feels are the 100 best ideas and then allow its users to vote on which of them should be funded. The users will narrow the results to 20 finalists, and a panel of judges will choose up to five ideas that will receive funding, Google said.

Google noted that the ideas can be big or small, technology-driven or not. But they do have to have a potential positive impact on the world. The company cited an example of two people coming up with an idea to help millions of people carry water long distances by designing the Hippo Water Roller, a relatively inexpensive 24-gallon container that can be easily wheeled on the ground. The categories for the project include, but are not limited to, community, energy, environment, health, education, shelter and opportunities for people to better provide for themselves and their families.

seriously though, a way of circumventing intellectual property for medicine in the third world would do so much good. and hopefully it would lead to a complete re-think regarding copyright law.

It’s not like you will get $10 million if you send in the best idea.

If you send in the best idea and you win, they will spend 10 million dollar financing that idea.

Its a ripoff. Google wants your genius ideas, and then decides who else (winners will NOT receive the funds) will implement the idea with 2 million each. WTF

    Plenty of ideas

    - Eliminate Chavs
    - Keep this website running
    - Get rid of Gordon Clown and the rest of the labour party in England.
    - Hunt down and exterminate all email spammers
    - Cure cancer
    - Make sure the next Star Trek movie is good, instead of the rubbish that it looks like it will be.

    world changing idea:

Open a series of schools with free tuition that teach skills so we dont need “professionals” to do our work for us- and encourage co-operative self-determination…within a generation or two we eliminate authoritarian government and capitalism. The world becomes heaven. (obviously I’m leaving out a bunch of socio-economic commentary/ideas, but you get the jist- create an anarchistic society…)

Schools to “encourage” co-operative self-determination that will eliminate authoritarian government and capitalism? For it to teach this wouldn’t it need to teach essentially everyone in a generation?

Aren’t you basically describing a re-education camp? I’m pretty sure that isn’t a ‘new’ idea.

Not to mention, you are coming from a place that assumes that these ideas will become cultural in a generation or two, and that children will adopt them. Either that, or we get an anarchistic society of forcibly sterilized people so they won’t have children.

Yeah right, they will receive millions of ideas FOR FREE, publish a hundred of them for everyone to see and steal, and they will pay one dork. I bet that in the contest terms you are not allowed to post an idea that is a protected intellectual property, meaning they can redistribute the “smarter” ideas. Smells like fraud.

Im with the skeptics on this. Intellectual property violation. Sourcing for free ideas which most likely be implemented in Google’s @ war mission to capture user behaviour online via as many possible ways it can interact with the user – all captured, stored and mined.

    “Legal ‘Hacking’” and “identity ‘theft’”

    Dear Releaslog,

In my opinion Google`s 10 to the 100 is an obvious ripoff of those ideas submitted in good faith. Yes, I submitted two ideas and trusted Google to do what they said they were going to do. I personally feel betrayed. I urge everyone who submitted an idea or so to call the F.T.C. like I did and file a complaint. I also filed compaints with just about everyone else I could find. I know that Google does not want the public scrutiny of formal investigations. You can file a complaint even if you didn`t submit an idea, if you were looking forward to voting on those ideas and now don`t get the chance. Who would have thought that Google, a company who treats their employees so well could do such a thing???

Google project 10 to the 100 turns into 10 to the maybe 5??? Call the F.T.C. and file a complaint if this angers you. The B.B.B., congress, senators, news media, call any and all of them and let Google know what you think. I did.
