Google News punished in Belgium

The big name on the internet still doesn’t mean that much. This would be probably a conclusion for the recent case of legal lawsuit against Google News service in Belgium. A Brussels court said Google Inc. violated copyright laws by publishing links to Belgian newspapers without permission and ordered the company to remove them, setting a precedent for future cases in Europe. Google, the owner of the world’s most-used search engine, must pay 25,000 euros ($32,500) a day until it removes all Belgian news content, the Brussels Court of First Instance ruled today. There’s “no exception” for Google in copyright law, the court said. The Mountain View, California-based company said it has already removed the content and will appeal the ruling.

The case may restrict how Internet sites in Europe link to newspaper content. Copiepresse, a group representing French- and German-language newspapers including La Libre Belgique and Le Soir, had sued Google for copyright infringement. The journals lose advertising revenue when Google uses snippets of articles and links directly to stories, bypassing ads on their Web sites, said Bruno Vandermeulen, a Brussels-based lawyer at Bird & Bird. The court ordered Google to remove articles, photos and graphics “from all its sites,” including Google News and cached copies visible in search results. The power of money in heads of some managers is sometimes driving me mad. These newspapers should actually think Google that they picked their RSS channels up and allowed visitors to see their content – which would most likely remain unreaded by these masses of people. Another sad example how can the good idea to help someone transfer into the unwanted problems…

Why would they wish to be removed from google?

Without a google listing a site may as well not exist. Most average people use google exclusivly when it comes to searching the net.

Well, as Martin did not name the source, I am not sure if they meant Google News or all of Google.
Although I don’t see any reason why “These newspapers should actually think Google that they picked their RSS channels up”.

It’s googlenews, not google as a whole.

The problem I see is this. They are complaining that using googlenews bipasses the ads.

Um.. does anyone honestly think online banner ads haev any impact on anyone other than obsessive compulsive retarded people? Just like the companies paying million for spam campaigns, NO ONE BUYS SHIT THEY GET SPAMMED WITH.

It’s retarded lame and shows how the people in control of the media have no grasp on todays technology.

The internet is a series of tubes indeed, fuck belgian chocolate

Go fuck your own chocolate, :-) I hope you know that a great deal of all sites make their profits trough ads.
And the other problem is that normally you have to pay for the older articles of that newspaper. So Google caches them when they are free and keeps them free. I for a matter do not agree with it but I don’t think you should judge Belgium for that!

WHat a bunch of whining losers, copyright bullshit. If I had made copyright rules it would specifically state that if you are an annoying asshole with your copyrights, they will be revoked immediately and the work is public domain.

dumbest court ruling for Europe… for this week. i swear that courts are getting dumber and dumber all the time. whatever, if the stupid company didn’t like it, here’s a clue, don’t allow spiders to view your site, block the Google IP’s, and don’t publish your shit on the internet.

getting listed in Google is the best free advertising a company can get. i guess they don’t like being advertised, which is kinda contradicting their reason for suing. i’ll just laugh now that their traffic will drop drastically as people continue to use Google for news and get their local news from intelligent sites who want the traffic and advertising.

its not about getting listed in google ….

lol, so some need money this bad!? hehe, I don’t understand why they do this.

I think google should remove all belgium news. And if they want news to google, google should sell news space for 25,000e/day. That would be great. Maybe this sued thingie would go away then. Happens too many times.

Google is the lord, bow down to him and receive’th his great bounty.

I’m sure if the almighty Google wishes it, Belgium will cease to exist… failing that Google could always just buy the newspapers in question and turn the frown upside down ;)

Sites make revenue from people viewing the ads not buying the merchandise you fucking idiots.

The ads themselves don’t work is my point, and trying to sue google for skipping ads that most people block is retarded.

This is how ads work on the internet for about 99% of people. They come to a site with ads and are blissfully unaware because they use adblocker because most ad companies also host trojans and malware.

    OR

They come to a site, see the ad and …… NEVER BUY THE PRODUCT. The only people that respond to these ads would also respond to people walking up to them on the street and yelling at them to buy their product until they did indeed buy it.

And I’m not trashing belgium, I won’t even get into the various reasons Belgium is STILL kissing Canada’s ass. But yes i do hate belgian chocolate.

another thing is that we have become so used to ignoring ads that even if we do see them, we just ignore them.

    All you is dumb?
The news is free at first so google picks it up, but after a certain period of time they maike it that way that you have to pay for a subscription to view the older news. But Google still shows it for free!
    Tadaa!
That’s their problem, I know it’s a dumb problem but the Belgian court didn’t do anything wrong.

Lol, what’s with all this Belgium bashing? Belgium kissing canada’s ass ? FYI we have no relation with canada whatsoever. So take your theories and go conspire how the world is after your sorry ass.

Anyway, I don’t agree with the court ruling. Sure, these newspapers will loose some of their revenue. But they actually have this special service that costs > 250€ a year to read newspapers online. I’m sure that’s the reason why they are after google.
