Google launches Lively, virtual world sim

A really bad news for Second Life: Google is launching a new service today called Lively, a browser based virtual world add-on that lets users create and customize avatars and worlds, interact with other users, and generally have a richer social interaction than is offered by GTalk today. Worlds can be embedded into web pages, although only Windows users on IE or Firefox can view them, after an add-on download and installation. Mac and Linux users will have to wait for now.

Google has created a number of sample rooms that can be copied and altered, or users can start from scratch and build their own world. Furniture and other items can be added and moved around. Avatars can talk to each other, do things like dance and shake hands, and manipulate objects (in a demo, my avatar was able to blow up drums of toxic waste by double clicking on them. Users can also, of course, chat with each other – GTalk is the underlying chat engine. This isn’t yet a full Second Life competitor. There’s no single world, for example, where users can move around. But it’s easy to see Google evolving this into a single online world. And then, of course, selling advertising into it.

Second Life? Never heard of it. This to me looks like a cross between imvu and Sims.

From what I could tell, Second Life was just advertising, furries, and porn. (and not even good porn at that..)

It’ll be interesting to see how this develops, I suppose..

Second life was/is a piece of crap. This game is another reason why our next generation of emo kids are so focked up and incapable of experiencing real life. And I mentioned emo kids with a LARGGGGGE emphasis, because they will not support the future of civ.

    @7

Only because you couldn’t get anyone to give you attention, or because you couldn’t even get e-ass on an online game?

Great, now kids can become even more anti social.

iPod buds in their ears everywhere they go.
    MMO games keep them indoors.
Kids walking around with arms folded across chest (Take a psychology class to see what I am getting at about this)
    Myspace/Facebook

A new instant gratification generation that is dumber than rocks and expects everything to be handed to them on a silver platter while living at home well into their 30’s.

    Go America!

as much as i dislike second life, you can’t really compare this to it.

this is more in line with imvu than second life – i don’t see google introducing a fully working economy that allows you to make real world money for this.

Looks a bit like The Sims.. and actually looks like fun or once too. I hate Second Life and all that real-money business around it.. It’s a game, it should be ‘fun’ to play.

Wow they could even create a world based on the real world, their satalite view + street of a country like the us….

They can port it and use it as the world… that would rock.

this thing is totally mickey-mouse, secondlife is far more advanced. SL has nothing to worry about as far as competition with this crappy web browser based thing. It’s two different worlds completely.

It is interesting. Even in this early stage, it has quite a bit of stuff you can do. It makes chatting a bit more entertaining, though it doesnt work that great if your graphics card is somewhat old. It think this is pretty cool. Plus, there is the added benefit that this wont make you a loser for trying to be a different person in a different world (vintage SL…).
