Google introduces new paid email plans
Google on Tuesday unveiled a new series of “Powered by Postini” hosted email and messaging services that are aimed at simplifying its software-as-a-service offerings and cutting its prices. Google, of Mountain View, Calif., is reorganizing several of the email security and compliance services from its acquisition last year of Postini into three packages, said Scott Petry, founder of Postini and product management director in Google’s Enterprise Management division. The first package, Google Message Filtering, includes Postini’s spam and malware filtering products, and is aimed at companies who want to shift the burden of such tasks to a third-party service, Petrie said. It will be offered to users for $3 per year.
The second, Google Message Security, includes Google Message Filtering along with enhanced virus detection, outbound message processing, and content policy management for companies worried about internal and external threats such as data leaks and compliance violations, he said. It will be offered for $12 per user per year. The third is Google Message Discovery, which include Google Message Security bundled with a year of message data archiving, retention, and discovery to help companies with legal discovery, Petry said. It will be offered for $25 per user per year. The new packages are offered as part of the Google Apps platform, which also includes Gmail email services, Google Docs for documents and presentations, Google Calendar for shared calendaring, Google Talk instant messaging, and Start Page for customizable home pages. I guess most of you will stay with free version of Gmail, which is already enough good in filtering spam.

is someone scared of yahoo/microsoft?
This looks like the end of free gmail and services.
If you want to continue using their web services you’ll pay.
Dam you microsoft buying yahoo to scare google. No good for us the users.
email at a cost i don’t think so, this will die very quickly
uhhh.. gmail is the free one and they will start charging you to use it since they already have you using it, just enter credit card to open you inbox now
@4 Erm….no, I don’t think that’s how it works. OK, you may be using gmail for free right now, but that doesn’t mean that Gmail can force you into buying your gmail address. What they are supplying are ‘optional addons’ for businesses.
If Gmail did start charging, there would be a global outcry. People would drop their Gmail accounts like hot potatoes, and the stock value of Google would plummet.
wow you kids are dumb.
it’s for businesses.
read before opening ya mouths, idiots.
These are business products not intended for private use. Businesses are lawbound to keep a record of their e-mail archive for legal and financial reasons. You can either set up your own mailserver, anti-spam, anti-virus and backup systems or pay someone to do it for you. Google figures we have all those capabilities why don’t you pay us to do it for you. They can couple your own domain name to the Google mail services.
I use the Google Apps service (free version) so I know what the scoop is here. Go to http://www.google.com/a/ and you will see that purchasing premium services to better manage email is what they are offering. Basically, Google wants to eventually create the Exchange killer.
and now to sit down at my google screen reading google news with a google sandwich made from google bread with those little google round sliced meat flavored substances, google google.
hmm gmail is crap, its not even able to deliver half of my emails to their destination…
Google’s free services are what made them into what they are today. Without them, Google would be nowhere near the size it is, and so it’ll never completely give up on free services. The extras, as have been mentioned before, are just for businesses.
>10 : Chris, have you considered registering your domain name with gmail for mx records? No problems after that.
Most of the mail filters stop at mail domain check, which in this case != gmail.com
wow, you can really gauge the average intelligence of RLSLOG users with this post. Read before commenting.
All i can say is that, google is trying to make ahead before the sudden impact of the merge. i have my ideas here. http://wp.youthalivehigh.com/?p=19
No way Microsoft+Yahoo will be able to do anything that will attract more customers than google.
Yahoo sucks. And thats a fact. They were good 10 years ago, but thats 8 years ago.
Microsoft=profit=most normal people will try to avoid them unless they cant do without.
Google=free and no sight of it ever costing money for private persons.
I dont see how MS+Yahoo will ever be capable of competing with that.
Yeah, yeah, i also believe that. But i think Microsoft won’t spend $40B if don’t have any funny idea is this merge. Maybe it turns out into luck. And that’s why they are busy doing something now. Better do it now than later.

$3 for better e-mail security, hell yes I´ll pay!
Google helped me arrange my flight to Maleysia for my sex adventure. They also helped in finding many of my illegal torrents loaded with virii. Plus they are keeping a nice record of any move I make on the net just in case I or the feds need it for any court related incident. And finally, they were nice enough to sell all my surfing habits to marketing companies to make billions, then offer me their broken gmail service for “free”. God, just typing this makes me yearn for the big google shaft to penetrate me even further, MMMMmmmmm. Thanks google!
Sure, these services are aimed at businesses, but the holy grail of companies like Google is to get everyone paying to allow users to do everything online. Several years ago, I read an article where one person in the computer industry said he’d like to see computers become nothing more than dumb terminals, with all the software running on remote servers. This way, they could charge people every time they wanted to do something.
