Google builds communication under sea

Google is planning a multi-terabit undersea communications cable across the Pacific Ocean for launch in 2009. The Unity cable has been under development for several months, with a group of carriers and Google meeting for high-level talks on the plan in Sydney last week. Google would not strictly confirm or deny the existence of the Unity plan today, with spokesman Barry Schnitt telling our North American correspondent Patrick Neighly that “Additional infrastructure for the Internet is good for users and there are a number of proposals to add a Pacific submarine cable. We’re not commenting on any of these plans.”

Although it may not be obvious at first look, it’s very profitable for Google to join with other carriers to build a new multi-terabit cable. Google would get access to a fibre pair at build cost handing it a tremendous cost advantage over rivals such as MSN and Yahoo, and also potentially enabling it to peer with Asia ISPs behind their international gateways - considerably improving the affordability of Internet services across Asia Pacific. The exact route for the cable is not yet finally determined although there are plans for a configuration using two separate routes to provide network diversity. It would potentially also be able to service Australia via interconnect to new and existing cables in Guam and Hawaii. What started as a search engine is now quickly growing into a multifunctional giant. Where do you plan to stop, mighty G?

It’s nice to see Google really diversifying itself. Maybe it’ll infuse some innovations into stagnant services.

oogle getting this big is not a good thing. They know (most people) everything we search and soon everything we can download. this is too much power for one company.

    Google is very bad.

Google is not a charity organization. Google is a direct marketing firm. They want to track everything that you do, from your searches, to your location, to your personal documents, and sell that information to their clients - including the government - for a fat profit. They have no concern for you and your privacy. To them, you are nothing but a number. Do not trust Google.

Is Google trying to be the next Microsoft? They seem to be following in the same footsteps by buying everything up and slapping their own stickers on them.

Wow BigBrother, you’re on the internet! What privacy?!?!

Do you think that every other userbase is there just for our pleasure? The most expencive sites are the ones with the most users… and they are made to be sold FOR PROFIT!

How many times haven’t I come across a site that tells me “you’re e-mail is used just for the registration process and will not be soled or made public”… yeah right!… again, what privacy?

Second thing… Google didn’t ask me for money not for one single service… if my searches are of some good for them and I get a quality product in return, let’em have it. I’m done with them, I got my share of information… now why should that be a problem, why should I worry that they might sell that to someone? Or is it because of the paranoic american thinking?

Mozilla was acused of being for profit too… but you all like your free Firefox browser, don’t you!

    Stop whining!
