Google announces Android mobile platform

Google on Monday announced a widely expected open-development platform for mobile devices backed by industry heavyweights like T-Mobile, HTC, Qualcomm and Motorola that could shake the wireless market to its core by simplifying and reducing the cost of developing mobile applications. The platform, called Android, has been developed by Google and others as part of the Open Handset Alliance, which has over 30 partners supporting it. The goal of this ambitious initiative is to spur innovation in the mobile space and accelerate improvements in how people use the Web via cell phones. The open-source platform will have a complete set of components, including an operating system, middleware stack, customizable user interface and applications.

The first Android-based phones should hit the market in the second half of 2008. The platform will be made available under an open-source license that will give a lot of flexibility to those who adopt it to modify its components and design services and products, Google said. Other founding members of the alliance include Broadcom, eBay, China Mobile, Intel, LG Electronics, NTT DoCoMo, Nvidia, Samsung, Sprint Nextel, Telecom Italia, Telefonica, Texas Instruments and Wind River. Noticeably absent from the list is traditional Google ally Apple, whose popular iPhone might see its innovation lead cut sooner than expected thanks to this Google effort. It looks we will see Google products everywhere sooner or later…

I’m not some troll who always hates on apple, but I’d hardly call the iphone innovative. HTC has made Many great phones for years whose hardware surpasses that of the iphone. The only remotely innovative thing is the multitouch which I don’t think advanced interaction with pdaphones to any signifant degee.

im guessing it will come in with some kick ass numbers in the memory size department. especially since apple only made 4 and 8gb phones id like to see this be a 100gb phone or maybe more

If they really want to shake the mobile industry to its core, how about starting a wireless plan where people can pay for minutes and then actually keep them until they use them up?

“Pre-pay! No contract! No monthly fees!” Bull! If you don’t put a certain amount of money in your account every month, they take away your minutes and shut off your account!

Why is the author wondering that Apple isn’t in the list of collaborators, but doesn’t even mention that the worlds biggest cellphone maker isn’t in this list?

This just in, Google to follow in Apple’s footsteps developing a phone with features that have been around forever hoping that everyone will forget and accept their claim that their clone is “new and innovative”.

In other news, a Google ‘executive’ acknowledged today that they had no idea what ‘Android’ meant, but thought it’d sound really kewl in a product name…

Lastly tonight, A rip in space-time is set to swallow the universe within the next 48 hours. Scientists theorize that Google’s use of Windows Mobile on their ‘new and innovative’ product mock up will cause the end of all life as we know it. “That much concentrated irony,” said Dr. Doe of JPL, “has cause the formation of what we’re calling an ‘irony black hole’, for want of a better term.” As there appears to be no way to stop this phenomena from destroying the universe, it appears, sadly, that no one will get to see the wonders that would have come from our overlords and Google.
