Good News: The writers’ strike is officially over

Striking Hollywood writers will be back at their keyboards Wednesday after voting overwhelmingly to end a 100-day walkout that essentially shut down the entertainment industry. More than 92 percent of the Writers Guild of America members who cast ballots Tuesday in Los Angeles and New York voted to end their work stoppage over residuals for writing in the digital age, including new media and the Internet. The new deal is for three years. “The strike is over. Our membership has voted, and writers can go back to work,” said Patric Verrone, president of the WGA’s West chapter.

Michael Winship, president of WGA’s East guild, said, “The success of this strike is a significant achievement not only for ourselves but the entire creative community, now and in the future. It is not all that we hoped for, and it is not all we deserve,” Verrone said when a tentative deal was announced Saturday. But he added, “This is the best deal this guild has bargained for in 30 years.”Leslie Moonves, chief executive officer of CBS Corp., told The Associated Press, “At the end of the day, everybody won. The vote meant that the Academy Awards ceremony on February 24 will be the usual scripted gala, the AP reported. I really look forward to see new episodes of my favourite shows…

    Not a second too soon. I think that the writers should get what they deserve, but on the same time I need my series… There has been a serious lack of entertainment for quite some time not.

    this god damn strike is nothing but emo on 10,000 levels. “Whine, i want 95 billion per hr, not 93″ i honestly don’t care about tv shows anymore, the whole writer strike thing has wised me up and i’ve quite literally stopped watching tv shows.

    i hope all the writers contract aids and die horribly.

    this is bad news. the writers were being greedy. now the sound man should get 2% of new media, the directors, actors, set builders… consumers are going to pay in the end for this.

    and on top of that Jay Leno and others were WAY better without them. boooo writers. booo studios for giving in and not going with indi projects insted.

    February 14th, 2008 | 20:05

    Ever since I heard a radio interview with a common sense writer, who spelled this whole thing out for us not in the middle of it, its hard not to see these people as a bunch of babies.

    They made a nice bit of coin before this, and the whole thing was really just ridiculous. Many of the writers didn’t participate actively because they didn’t feel they were being cheated.

    February 14th, 2008 | 20:33

    Wait till you all see how much the price of DVD’s go up as a reuslt of this strike settlement.

    I hope these greedy writers are happy with what they’ve done.

    What does this word mean in your comment: “emo”?

  28. BigNickTBD
    February 14th, 2008 | 20:46

    @25

    They made next to no coin compared to what the company they worked for made. 4% of every dollar is nice for the first (and only) paycheck but compared to everything that is earned from DVD sales, advertising, reruns, and online media the paycheck looks like chump change. They should have their 8% of every single dollar that is made from their hard work and not just a first-run payoff.

  29. Barney
    February 14th, 2008 | 20:49

    @BigNickTBD

    You forget to mention that the writers also get paid up front for the writing work in the first place. They get paid before the producers even know if the movie or tv show is going to be a hit or if it is going to lose money.

    The writers take no risk, but want all of the rewards. Bunch of wealthy, greedy crybabies.

    February 14th, 2008 | 21:13

    @26, uncle benn,

    why would dvd prices go up? this strike was over new media profits. even then, prices shouldn’t change, as it’s simply a matter of the pie being redistributed more evenly (well, relatively speaking). am i missing something? ’cause it seems only fair to make money off something you had a big hand in creating.

  31. lol
    February 14th, 2008 | 21:47

    funny how people speak out of their a$$es rather then laying out the facts straight. Writers are the soul creater’s of almost every media driven thing on tv or movies. Without writers we wont have great shows or movies so why do u act as if they are greedy. You would be too if you had next to nothing in salary, when the big boss receives all the profit. Without the “brain” you have nothing…so all the tv viewers and movie watchers you should be defending the writers because they are the ones that created the feeling of wanting “more of” in a show.

  32. SoulSeeker
    February 14th, 2008 | 21:58

    How stupid can people be? How can you not be on the writers side?
    Oh yeah shure, those greedy writers are the bad guys if DVD prices go up because now they get a fiew cents more per DVD sold instead of all the money going straight into the studios pockets, who actualy dont contribute to the “making progress” at all and just sell the product after its done…

    Goddamnit people… think for once, k?

    Booh, damn mining workers wanting work safety laws and health insurance… now we have to pay more for hour coal. Yeah right… idiots.
    Also those pesky little sweatshop kids… if they act up my nike shoes will cost more, oh poor me!

  34. SoulSeeker
    February 14th, 2008 | 22:20

    How could I not mention this lol

    Ok, concerning DVD prices… also take in consideration the outrages demand they made… OMG, 0.3 percent more per DVD sold!! Thats DOUBLE than what it was bevore… oh no, now I have to pay 0.6% of what the DVD costs to the writers… those BASTARDS!

  35. Joe
    February 14th, 2008 | 22:44

    When you look at the shows on tv, you can see that most of these writers aren’t good. There is only a small percentage that deserves the big money. This strike could last another year and I would have no problem with it because I have so many movies and shows that I still need to watch.

    Anyhow, it doesn’t matter much to me financially as I either get my shows through torrent/usenet or straight from the library if I want to see the extra features.

    One article suggested that when you compare what they’ll gain over the next three years (the length of the contract) to what they lost during the strike, they actually came out behind.

  40. Jeremy
    February 15th, 2008 | 00:26

    @Rekrul

    So that makes the writers look even more like idiots for letting the strike go on for so long. What a shame.

    I was actually happy when it was annouced that the writers striked, cause regular TV shows really sucked with them but without them I haven’t watched TV since the strike. Now that there back maybe there will be something to watch again on TV, I don’t hold any hope, better than nothing that is on now.
    I think its been a couple of months I actually watched TV for more than 15 minutes. I been watching anime online and listening to music and reading outside etc..

    I couldn’t care less that those talentless hacks went on strike. When is the last time one of them actually wrote something good? 99.9% of TV shows nowadays are a complete waste of time. The world would be better off without all that crap polluting people’s minds.
