Glen Campbell - Meet Glen Campbell (Advance) (2008)

For anyone who’s not familiar with Glen Campbell, he’s a country singer, whose rather old-school.  He’s got the definitive version of several just classic American songs, such as “By the Time I Get to Phoenix” and “Wichita Lineman”.  In fact, he’s earned over 20 Top 10 singles in the span of his career.  I saw this today, clicked on it out of curiosity, and am so glad I am.  In the middle of a first listen, and to be honest, it’s brilliant so far and barring a total mess of the last few tracks, might just be my favorite album of the year so far.  It’s a cover album, with him making several artist’s songs his own, such as Green Day, Foo Fighters, U2, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Velvet Underground, the Replacements, and more.  It is a country album by definition, but in a way very few artists can, with this album he penetrates genre barriers and has made, IMO, the best country-related album since Johnny Cash’s American IV.  Perhaps the best thing is, thanks to this advance from FM, we’re getting it over a month early.

Glen Travis Campbell (born April 22, 1936, Delight, Arkansas) is a Grammy Award, Dove Award winning, and two time nominated Golden Globe Award American country pop singer and guitarist and occasional actor. He is best known for a series of hits in the 1960s and 1970s, as well as for hosting a television variety show called The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour on CBS television.

I normally would have just seen “country” and kept scrolling, but let me say, Chinballs; you make very descriptive, well-done posts. As I read through it I became interested and so I’ll check it out. Cheers.

suck (sk)::To draw in by establishing a partial vacuum..How can this suck?.. I do know what you mean btw. The burning question is why has this been put here? Is it due to lack of anything to release or is it to score browny points!..

Make your own conclusions.. What i have seen (I think, correct me if im wrong.) is people wanting to let us know about other posts that have been missed whilst rlslog toast their marsh mellows (No offence intended), but havent incase they get banned for off topic..

Glen was more than just country, don’t judge him by that title. anyway anything he did is a million times better than the modern hip-hop/rap/techno crap we usually see here. listen to some real musicians once in a while you kids and learn something.

Brilliant review. I wouldn’t say this is country, though. More like pop with a twang here and there, which is really what GC is all about anyway.

imho, seems to me that rock covers of country, folk, or western music work, but country covers of rock don’t (always a few exceptions). The best country out there right now is still in the so-called alt.country field. Nashville s_ucks bull balls and folk is for date nite!!!

Campbell was one helluva guitar player. Probably still is. He was one of the most sought after session players in the country during the 60’s and 70’s. Kinda like the Slash of country back then. He was one of Elvis’ guitar players on record and tour. He also wrote some fine lyrics in his day.

Never in a million years did I think I would ever see the day on RLSLOG that we’d be discussing a cd of a 72 yr old man. LOL

Give the man an EMMY for his description of 72 yr old Glen Campbell.

If you tie yourself to one genre (buying into a “brand”), you’ll miss out on good music, wherever it may be.

Good music is generally made by people who would make it regardless of whether they got paid to do it or not; good music is sincere, even if it’s technically bad (Neil Young instantly springs to mind. You might not like him, but you have to concede that he puts himself into his music, even if it means feedback or singing off-key). Chuck D is sincere. Kathleen Edwards is sincere. Lou Reed is sincere. So are Tom Waits, Tom Petty, and Tom Araya. People who need to make music are everywhere.

Bad music is usually generated by a team or committee in pursuit of a paycheck. Google Maurice Starr.

I guess people have forgotten Pat Boone’s CD of covers of heavy metal songs, like “Enter Sandman”

But if you want a whole bunch of stars who went insane one day and said to themselves “Hey, I know I CAN sing!!!!”, check out RHINO’s “Golden Throats” series.

…Bad Singing, Good Stuff (If you like that kind of thing)…
