Girl Talk – Feed the Animals (2008)

This is a scene release, and yet, it isn’t.

You can choose to go through the scene, and get it encoded in VBR based off the FLAC files, or you can go to the artist’s website and get the album in 320kbps mp3 there. In a situation similar to Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails, you can choose to pay whatever you like for the album, from absolutely nothing, to $5, which unlocks the album in FLAC format, or $10 which will do that and pays for a physical copy of the CD when it’s available.

Girl Talk is my favorite mashup DJ, partially because he pulls inspiration and samples from so much material. He weaves compositions through at times dozens of external sources. Anyone who can mix The Police, Busta Rhymes, and Faith No More in seconds and make it sound great is definitely someone with skill.

Girl Talk is the stage name of DJ Gregg Gillis (born October 26, 1981). Gillis, who is based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, has released four CD albums on Illegal Art and vinyl releases on 333 and 12 Apostles. He began making music while a student at Case Western Reserve University. He specializes in sample-based remixes, in which he uses at least a dozen elements from different songs to create a “new” song. At his early shows, Gillis became notorious for his exhibitionist antics on stage, spontaneously removing most or all of his clothing mid-performance. He has given different explanations for the origin of his stage name, once saying it alluded to a Jim Morrison poem and once saying it alluded to an early Merzbow side project. Girl Talk was featured in Good Copy Bad Copy, a documentary film about remix culture.

It’s not electronic or hip hop… it’s a genre that incorporates many styles. It’s called “mashups.”

Coolio, you like the first album? Really?! His first and second album were pretty crappy. I pegged him as a Bit_Meddler rip-off for awhile but his third and now fourth album are good, I must admit. :)

wootwoot, come on.. 10 is waaay off, maybe 10 every 30 seconds. :P

broham, if you wished to insult the fans of Girl Talk at least get it right and say most of them are hipsters; Which is sad but true. Maybe then you wouldn’t look like such an ignorant fool.. maybe.

seen this dude a bunch of times he puts on an amazing show, especially if you like to dance…personally he is an awesome guy as well. he really makes an effort to get the crowd into his music, and has an uncanny ability to be able to play in front of any type of crowd that is thrown at him.

this album is for sure different than night ripper, but that being said, i am glad that he didn’t just try to recreate night ripper.

this is so good, i just listened to it twice. i am simply blown away. if you like hiphop at all listen to it, even a little bit, it has everything. the continuity and vircular nature are simply amazing and make it better than night ripper which gets old half way through. thanks rlslog for letting me know it came out but i reccomend downloading it from illegalart.com, girl talks site. its free anyways.

Does anyone have the actual Flac release of this and can comment on the following:
The first track has heavy artificating due most probably to the 16kHz lowpass. Sounds like a low bit-rate MP3 even though I apparently have the encoded from FLAC @ 320kbps MP3 from usenet. The 2nd track isn’t anywhere near as bad. The track transitions are not all gapless either. Even if you have the MP3 from a different source I’d like to know if yours are the same. If this grows on me I’ll make a purchase but not if they’re all like this …

If you like this try out The Kleptones. Some of it is not so great but some is excellent! http://www.kleptones.com/

Its hardly Prodigy’s ‘Dirtchamber Sessions’ is it?

Jumps from song to song a little easily.

  54. Dustin
    June 22nd, 2008 | 17:25

This album is pretty bad ass, If this is your first time listening to Girl Talk try his previous album titles Night Ripper, that album is mind blowing. He mixes every kind of music that was ever a hit and does it well. This is definitely an album for the kids with A.D.D as every 15 seconds there is a new song/beat introduced.

  55. SomeOtherNobHead
    June 22nd, 2008 | 19:38

Man you kids show your age.

It’s just ANOTHER bloody mashup. 57.Mr Ryan is right. It’s no Dirtchamber sessions. Nor is it anywhere like Dangermouse (who has done… err 0 mashups, only top notch mixes).

This is just a flippin break album with vocals in it. Totally uninspiring pop garbage.

If you wanna b1tch and moan at me ask yourself why an artist with no where near the same might as Nine Inch Nails etc is giving it away for free.

  56. manu
    June 22nd, 2008 | 20:34

    @SomeOtherNobHead

What, you have to be some big shot celeb to give away your music? He gets it – thats why he gives it for free. Stop moaning like a chav and get lost.

  58. does anyone know
    June 23rd, 2008 | 00:02

i must say i know nothing about this kinda stuff but i was really wondering about how he is able to sample so many artist’s music. i mean i know like puffy samples a lot of other artist’s music in his songs but he’s puffy with lots of money. gt is not as well known and there are soooo many different songs that are sampled and he’s giving out the album 4 free (which i really appreciate btw), so like is it really cheap to use other artist’s stuff? just curious thats all, thanks 4 the post too :)

Wow SomeOtherNobHead, do you really think people don’t know about Dirt Chamber Sessions (which is good) and Dangermouse (whom is terrible)?! You’re a bigger fool than #14.
There’s nothing more sad than people who point out the obvious and think they’re elevating their opinion above others when really they’ve said nothing new. Grats on that. :)

    Breaks album?! Lmfao…

how do you compare danger mouse and girl talk?

they’re ridiculously different. wow. i’m confused at even the thought of it.

and he’s giving it away for free because he knows that the vast majority of people will just download it anyway. at least this way he might get some money for it.

I just did a review of Girl Talk’s FEED THE ANIMALS at my blog NOOSIC.

    http://noosic.wordpress.com/

There is a great WIKI page for all the samples used in this album. Just google WIKI and Feed the animals. If I did not have this resource I would have never been able to do a good thorough review. Check it out and drop your opinion’s and comments there.
