Ghost Dog The Way of the Samurai 1999 DVDRip XviD iNT-PFa

As I said yesterday I should post the other 3 old movies PFa released yesterday. This film is a good rated one, starring 2007 Oscar Winner “Forrest Whitaker” for his role in “The Last King of Scotland”. It seems to be a decent crime/drama film from back 1999. Now I found out that this film exist I’m curious to see another one with Whitaker playing in it. Some of you may have seen it and can give us some advise. The quality of PFa as always good. Enjoy!

In Jersey City, an African American hit man follows “Hagakure: The Way of the Samurai.” He lives alone, in simplicity with homing pigeons for company, calling himself Ghost Dog. His master, who saved his life eight years ago, is part of the local mob. When the boss’ daughter witnesses one of Ghost Dog’s hits, he becomes expendable. The first victims are his birds, and in response, Ghost Dog goes right at his attackers but does not want to harm his master or the young woman. On occasion, he talks with his best friend, a French-speaking Haitian who sells ice cream in the park, and with a child with whom he discusses books. Can he stay true to his code? And if he does, what is his fate?

This movie is lame. ‘Ghost Dog’ waves his gun around like its a sword before he puts it away in his holster. It looks so ridiculous.

Whoa, 74% at IMDB and 78% at rottentomatoes? I thought it was some sort of pointless ‘yo wazzup gangsta’ crap, so thanks for turning my attention to it.

Nice movie – yeah the whole gun waving is kinda gay, but the rest of it is cool.

Jarmusch movies are probably not suited for most here.

  10. June 30th, 2007 | 21:16

9: As they require viewers to think for themselves? heh

Great movie, it’s been a long time since I’ve had a chance to watch it. ^_^

Yep, i’d say it’s a bit more spiritual/ thinking than action… that’s if i remember it correct; it’s been a few years since i watched it. I do remember i liked it though! I got it in my ‘movie-library’, but haven’t a register over them so it would probably take a while to find it :( .

Can anyone recommend a nice app to keep register over my movies? I don’t need/ want one of them huge ‘IMDB-database’ apps. All i want is Title, year, number of my cd and maybe a picture of the movie.

    Anyone..?

Wha a boring, pretentious film. Idiotic premise with a common ‘gangsta’ killer trying to rationalise his ‘craft’ as some kind of spiritual Bushido Samurai code of honour. Nothing intellectual about this movie, slow and uninvolving. Whittaker’s character is so pretentious and unlikeable, scowling all movie, that it’s impossible to feel any sympathy or empathy. By the end I was praying to see him get a bullet in the head to spare me any more idiotic soliloquays. Maybe if the film was ironic it could work, but it takes itself so ridiculously seriously!

    the gangsters are hilarious!!!

Sonny Valerio: What the fuck is his name?
    Louie: Ghost Dog.
    Sonny Valerio: What?
    Louie: Ghost Dog.
    Sonny Valerio: Ghost Dog?
Joe Rags: He said Ghost Dog.
Louie: Yeah. He calls himself Ghost Dog. I don’t know, a lot of these Black guys
today, these gangster-type guys, they make up names like that.
    Ray Vargo: Is that true?
Sonny Valerio: Sure. He means like the rappers, you know, All the rappers, they got
names like that: Snoop Doggy Dogg, Ice Cube, Q-Tip, Method Man. My favorite was
always Flavor Flav from Public Enemy. You got the funky fresh fly flavor.
    [rhymes hip-hop verse]
Ray Vargo: I don’t know about that, but it makes me think of Indians. They got name
like, uhh, Red Cloud, Crazy Horse, Running Bear, Black Elk.
    [makes elk noise]
Sonny Valerio: Yeah. That kind of shit.
Joe Rags: Yeah. Indians, Niggers, Same thing.

    @ Tech-9

if you don’t need a data base then use excel or Access
this way you have it the way you want it to be

i really prefer the progs with databases though

Its not the typical jim jarmusch movie. like down by law or coffee and cigarettes, but i liked it very much. dont make the mistake just to watch it, cause theres nothing else to entertain you. then its an awfl and boring flick. get to the inside and you will enjoy it the whole lenght…

    @ SoniKalien & YoPlaY

    Thanks!
DiscLib seems to be ok. With Excel i can get it (almost) the way i want, but it’s a lot more work having to wright everything (1.5k movies). With DiscLib i can just scan the discs and add a number. Thanks again! :)

I think this is a good movie, but as someone said, you have to “get inside it”, not just watch it because Whitaker is in it and “OMG OMG I have to watch every Forrest Whitaker movie now because he won an oscar!!1!one”

If you like Bobby Digital/RZA (or The Wu-Tang Clan for that matter) there are plenty of inside jokes / trivia stuff in the movie :)

With that said this is NOT, I repeat NOT a “YO-B0YZZ iN da h00d” movie.

I take issue with comment #9. I’ve seen some stuff posted here that I sure as hell can’t find at the local hick video store. Indeed, there have been some films (i.e. – Manufactured Landscapes, Painted Veil or Little Red Flowers) that I had never even heard of until I saw them posted here. Granted, I don’t own a television and I was not really raised as part of the MTV-jump-cut-edit generation, so the pacing of Ghost Dog (or any of Jarmusch’s other films, for that matter) works for me, because I’m willing to invest some of my time for a worthy payoff. Any film that people have bothered to pay attention to detail to — whether it is in the writing, acting, editing, sound, whatever –is worth the 120 minutes you will spend watching it.

Admit it, most of you fuckers wasted three to six hours of your life watching American Pie sequels and spinoffs. On your deathbed, you’ll regret it. When you search your soul on the day your number’s up, you’ll be glad you watched Ghost Dog.

P.S. – The soundtrack is kick-ass. It’s synched to the pigeons and everything.

Nice pick Mike…. an indy movie and at the time pushing the limits of new edge movies. If you get it then you’ll enjoy it and if you don’t well then spend some more time on Mike’s picks and enlarge your minds… I hope then you get it.

WACK!! I just want u 2 see how wack this movie is and say it yourself! WACK!!

  26. soundtrack
    July 2nd, 2007 | 22:17

Wasted Potential mentions the soundtrack being synchronized to the pigeons – the pigeons flying, above that dragging beat, that’s one of the mental sceneries that kept coming up for months after I had seen the movie in 2000. I just had to get the soundtrack.

Without the images though, the soundtrack is less captivating. The Sun-Tzu phrases on the art of war, the befriended iceman, the little girl with her suitcase, loyalty, dying, crying.

NOT a timeless masterpiece, but it did make me expect something of later movies with Forest Withaker. I was SO MUCH looking forward for The Last King Of Scotland, and I still was thrilled. There aren’t many movies with Withaker that I like, though. There is a tragic comedy drama with a happy ending: A Little Trip To Heaven, and a really nice U.S. drama is American Gun (both 2005).
