    admit defeat when their console is selling better?

    you know why MS is developing the next XBOX, and actually going to release it before 2010? Because the 360 is already outdated.

    “do they finally admit defeat or deliver more empty promises?”

    What is your definition of defeat?

    Come on dude (or chick), Sony is not gonna go away, whether they are 1st, 2nd, or 3rd, they are like Puff Daddy said, Can’t stop, Won’t stop. Ugh,ugh Ugh,ugh……. It’s Sony

    Sony has an almost infinite ability to upgrade the unit, and create relevant software thanks to the cell processor and blu ray.

    Unless MS adopts a media with the same or better storage properties, and a processing unit on the next XBOX that actually allows it to stay relevant for more than a few years, they have no chance to combat the PS3 even with their next console.

    Given MS’ history, I don’t see them as a company that wants to provide a future proof console. They want your money every few years, not every 8-10 like Sony.

    Sony has 3 successful platforms. MS has one, and its sales are plummeting due to a children’s console, and over the past months, the inevitable realization of what the PS3 should be. It will only get better.

    As Sony’s CEO said, “Sony is the equivalent of ocean front property in a sellers market”. Through June of ‘08, they have sold 1.8 million PS3’s in the US, 1.6 million PSP’s, and 1.5 million PS2’s, a product in its ninth year on the market. Thats a total of more than 5 million units of hardware less than halfway through the year, just in the US, and the holidays haven’t even hit yet.

    That is money that directly goes into development of not only tomorrows console, but the current PS3 as well.

    Ive owned a PS3 since April, after a long time shopping both consoles. Ive been a PC gamer for over a decade. I am so unbelievably impressed with the PS3, the firmware updates, the games, the quality of the blu ray player, it goes on and on.

    Might literally be the best $350 I ever spent.

  11. PitViper401
    July 16th, 2008 | 02:22

    @3 The PS3 is selling better because the majority of gamers already have a 360, that’s why MS is working on pushing the casual gaming, the media center abilities, and the social aspects now.

    I hope PS3 exclusive games list will improve from last year for the price of the PS3 so far the exclusive PS3 games have been ass except for MGS4.
    How much do you have to pay monthly or yearly to subscribe to go online for the 360? I heard PS3 is free with virtually the same features as the 360.
    Hope they release original games sick of FPS

    @17 in the uk £4.99 monthly or £39.99 per year, think it’s a fairly equivalent dollar amount. The live service on the 360 is far superior IMO and well worth the entry fee.

    I’m a self confessed 360 fanboy but I doubt Sony’s far from finished, once they start laying out the amazing exclusives and cut the price it’ll sell buckets but at the minute I think for the average person it’s far too expensive to be a justified.

    Also, 360’s not finished yet, Highest adopt rate of this gen. 360 owners buy more games than anyone else, speaks volumes if you ask me. Could change in a year or two if Sony pull their finger out and get out those exclusives. MGS4 is awesome but it’s not worth £350 if you see what I mean.

    I shall watch this with great interest.

    @22 I’d like to believe you as I love seeing Sony make empty threats against Xbox live but I’m sure they’ve thought it through. Server based rather than p2p similar to EA’s 360 titles and fat enough pipes to cope with all the connections at once and I’m sure it can be done. I’m just not sure how sony plan to pay for all that bandwidth without charging the players like WoW does is beyond me. Unless it’s their cunning plan to destroy live by throwing money at something like this.

    PS3 take down XBOX360 in technical perspective. It’s a FACT!
    PS3:Nvidia+Cell Processor+Blu-ray+Online Gaming (Free)
    XBOX360:ATi+IBM Xenon Processor+DVD+Online Gaming (but costs)
    Both have the same third-party game line-up, except the XBOX
    exclusives like Gears of War 2, Fable 2 (they will eventually come to PC couple of months later so i don’t care).
    Both sides fanboys should just calm and enjoy gaming.

    Fanboy – to poor to buy both systems so they whine that the system they have is best in hopes they won’t feel bad for their purchase.

    I have all 3 systems. They’re all good for what they’re supposed to do. I do prefer my 360 but mainly that’s cause I prefer Xbox live and the controller but that doesn’t make it a better system.

  35. Protektor
    July 16th, 2008 | 08:25

    @17 PS3 online with virtually same features? What are you smoking, because it must be really strong if you believe that. The online offering of XBox Live is so far beyond what Sony is doing with the PS3 that it isn’t even funny. Sony didn’t plan to offer trophies but realized that they had to because of Microsoft. Sony said they would offer movies and TV for download, but XBox has way more, not to mention the announcement of working with Netflix puts the XBox over the top. The way XBox Live is built in to so many games makes Sony’s offer look lame. Sony will be playing catch-up to Microsoft for quite some time.

    Too bad Microsoft is selling more consoles than the PS3. Not to mention the low attachment rate that PS3 still is experiencing. Which means people are buying the PS3 mainly as Blu-Ray player, and not a gaming machine, just like the problem Sony had when the PS2 came out. People for like a year or more were buying the PS2 as a cheap DVD player. It was costing Sony big time, fortunately they eventually came up with some must-have exclusives that got people to start using them as game machines.

  36. Protektor
    July 16th, 2008 | 08:30

    @3 Selling better? Have you lost your mind and forgotten which numbers are higher than others? Microsoft has sold more XBox 360 consoles in the last year than Sony has sold PS3s. That’s within the same time frame. These are NPD numbers if you want to look them up. Even Sony won’t try to tell you that they are out selling anyone. They are *NOT* out selling Microsoft and they aren’t even outselling Nintendo. Sony is definitely in last place for console sales. Check your facts before you make yourself look silly.

  37. Protektor
    July 16th, 2008 | 08:35

    @22 You might want to learn a little something about networking before you say just the amount of people cause lag. 256 people in and of themselves don’t cause lag, think about how many people are online on a single server of say Everquest, Ultima Online, Star Wars Galaxy, or any other MMO server.

    If you design things properly 256 isn’t a huge issue. What is an issue if you make one of the player’s machines be the server which is what you see in a number of PC games, or you have to have everything in perfect sync. Which at that point the slowest player drags everyone down to his level.

    PS3 is great, sure there are not so many games that I like for it so far but I use it as a media player all the time, streaming video from the computer to the PS3 in a jiffy.

    these bitter 360 fanboys have obviously got nothing better to do with their time as they stare at their RRODs

    @40 is right, PS3 is also a brilliant media server, in fact it does everything you want it do to do, amazingly

  42. Protektor
    July 16th, 2008 | 09:29

    @40 & @41 Oh you mean acting as a media extender just like the original XBox did and the XBox 360 has always done? Nothing new there by Sony. That is one of the few things that Microsoft did do first, although it wasn’t exactly an original idea.

    Isn’t this the whole thing that Microsoft and Sony where suppose to be fighting over for the last few generations of machines? I thought that was the whole reason that Microsoft got into the console wars. They didn’t want to be cut out of the machine that ends up in the living room and becomes everyone’s pipe to content and the internet. Seems like to me that perhaps Sony forgot which long term game they were suppose to be playing.

  43. Lastdenz
    July 16th, 2008 | 09:52

    Alright look all this battle of the consoles is pointless, both machines are going to be outdated very fast considering that none of them support dx10 not to mention that there already is a new dx11 on the way, the only way for people to be able to play the newest games in the best graphics with best online support, and fps is simply to play them on pc. And yeah I know people will say that “but that is not the same” and that is true it is not, but it is the only way you are going to have the newest hardware. Otherwise face it ps3 and xbox are the same, companies port games from one console to the other without much difference in them so even though ps3 Is more powerful than the xbox, it is only on very few occasions that you will ever feel it. Both consoles hardware is outdated compare to the new graphic cards and cpu´s and they always will be, because it takes time to develop a console, and during that time Intel, AMD, Ati and nvidia are not resting just to let the consoles catch up.

    Anyone who thinks Zipper Interactive is gonna be able to pull off 256 players in MAG is insane. Zipper might be one of the worst developers when it comes to online support.

    Hello everyone.

    I’m a 36 old Portuguese male that started on a atari2600 and stopped at PS2.

    I think that Xbox and 360 don’t brig anything new to the console industry. On the other hand, wii is great concept in terms of fun and market. Nintendo hitted Bullseye with this aproach to the market. Thats a funny and desirable console.

  46. STIMBOX
    July 16th, 2008 | 12:58

    I am happy with my PS3 and I will be happy with my PS3 in 2 years when microsoft releases their next console and stops supporting the 360. cost of the 360 + their next console will far exceed the amount I payed for my PS3 that will most likely still have games being released in 6 or 7 years. PS2 is how old now? They are still releasing games for it all the time. Original Xbox is how old? When was the last game released?

  47. Matt
    July 16th, 2008 | 13:50

    @37
    I stand by my statement. The game will lag.

    “how many people are online on a single server of say Everquest, Ultima Online, Star Wars Galaxy, or any other MMO server.”
    Are they full HD based shooters all playing on the same map? No.

    @34
    “but other games like R:FoM and Warhawk use these servers.. dedicated servers won’t make a game lag: FACT”
    Much like the comment above, no other game has had all the players on the same map at 1 time. Plus as I said before, most people in places such as the UK have poor broadband options and are bound to lag.

    Yes you can google around and find most ISP’s in UK offer 8MB/16MB but 8/10 people dont even get half that speed unless there in a city.

    @49 Guan

    In America Sony are dropping the 40GB PS3 and replacing it with an 80GB model for the same price but it will not be backwards compatible with PS2 games. The more expensive BC 80GB PS3 will still be available. It’s not a price cut as such but you will get more storage for the same price (like what M$ are doing with the 20GB & 60GB 360’s).

    @37 Protektor

    One thing that he PS3 can do (media wise) which the 360 cannot (because of hardware limitations) is handle live TV and record it at the same time:

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7178661.stm

  52. Robin Hood
    July 16th, 2008 | 19:55

    @47 The lag in a multiplayer game most of the time is not caused by slow internet speed. It is mostly because of server load. Yes your internet connection can also cause lag but you need a very slow connection somewhere near dialup or a dsl with heavy traffic. If your internet connection has a heavy traffic aka many people are using your internet connection at the same time then things will lag. Lagging is not caused by having too many people in the same map playing the same game. Again its caused by the server load. If in a server there are way too many people that it can’t handle, either it would lag or crash. Your theory about too many people in the same map sometimes is correct, thats when the player have poor hardware to handle so many people in one map. Since all ps3s has same hardware and MAG is made for ps3 then it shouldn’t be lagging. Now if Sony takes a cheap shot investing less on servers then yea there might be a prob. MS did that with Live, when the server went down few months ago they upgraded. A game, hd or not is nowhere the cause of lagging because the the player’s console generates those HD contents. In a MP game only the instructions passes through not the graphics.

    So im guessing for MS to get the new xbox out by 2010 the will be rushing it………..again. So every second unit will be screwed within the first two weeks………..again :P

  54. Matt
    July 17th, 2008 | 02:38

    @52
    But what I also mean is that many people in the UK will lag anyway unless there in a city. This will mean that people could have an unfair advantage over others and thus make the game a mass fail.
