Full Metal Jacket begins by following the trials and tribulations of a platoon of fresh Marine Corps recruits focusing on the relationship between Gunnery Sergeant Hartman and Privates Pyle and Joker. We see Pyle grow into an instrument of death as Hartman has forseen of all of his recruits. Through Pyle’s torment and Joker’s unwillingness to stand up against it the climax of part one is achieved with all three main characters deciding their fates by their action or inaction. The second chapter of Full Metal Jacket delves into Joker’s psyche and the repeated referal to the fact that he joined the Corps to become a killer. When his mostly behind the scenes job as a combat correspondant is interfered with by the Tet offensive he is thrust into real combat and ultimately must choose if he really is a killer.

Full Metal Jacket

Stanley Kubrick’s return to filmmaking after a seven-year hiatus, this film crystallizes the experience of the Vietnam War by concentrating on a group of raw Marine volunteers. Based on Gustav Hasford’s novel The Short Timers, the film’s first half details the volunteers’ harrowing boot-camp training under the profane, power-saw guidance of drill instructor Sgt. Hartman (R. Lee Ermey, a real-life drill instructor whose performance is one of the most terrifyingly realistic on record). Part two takes place in Nam, as seen through the eyes of the now thoroughly indoctrinated marines. Ironically, Full Metal Jacket was filmed almost entirely in England.

    Unfortunately this was filmed in 4:3 format and trimmed for a cinema widescreen release, so don’t throw out your dvd copies just yet…

    is mr x the boss of rlslog? he sure acts like it always instructing other posters to do things.
    Surely if you have a probelm with something someone has posted just send them an email or pm them in irc etc. Anything which is NOT PUBLIC would make the site look more professional.
    Even if it is meant well, constantly posting such things in comments looks as if you are having a go at other staff all the time

    If YOU knew your movie history, then you have to include Spartacus in the list, a stunning epic which Kubrick was both Director and Cinematographer for 90% of it.

    As for FMJ, lads I know from the Industrial group Test Dept. were extras in the movie, playing grunts in the sequence filmed at London Docklands. ;)

    whats all the fuss about Kubrick? Most of his movies are crap, even the Shining wasn’t anything outstanding apart from a few scenes.

    and the second half shows a good view, you get your ass kicked in boot camp because when u get there your gonna get it kicked worse!!

    Imagine coming across human graves which is what they did?!

    The film is not just a parady of one liners like in the beginning

    This movie was shot close to 4:3 aspect ratio and was cropped for theatre.

    is there any way to get a nice 4:3 HD release just like the original SD dvd that was released a few years back?!

    Trust me, I know my moviehistory, and I wrote the ones, that are better than Full Metal Jacket. Spartacus, like this one or The Shining, are less successfull. Eyes Wide Shut being his worst, in my opinion.

    The man was a genius, very few people could set an atmosphere like Kubrick. Even just hearing the synths in Clockwork Orange gives me shivers down my spine. A movie making God.

    Yeah, ’cause when I was in the Army it was JUST like this. Actually I think you should learn just about any life experiences primarily from watching movies. They are notoriously accurate and true to life.

    If you guys like this movie check out Jason Aaron’s comic The Other Side. Jason Aaron is the cousin of the guy who wrote the book that Full Metal Jacket is based on. The comic features talking guns, even more brutal drill sergeants, and a perspective from a Viet Cong soldier.

    Might want to check out the Killing Fields (8/10 @ IMDB). Not quite Vietnam, though none the less very much related -i.e. the Communist overthrow of the Cambodian government. Bound to break a tear or two.

    I have VLC to play the .mkv files, but what will allow me to burn them to DVD? I have Nero8 but it won’t recognize the file. I have a DVD app on this laptop, but usually I burn files less than 700 Mb to a CD because my DVD player is DIVX compatible and plays .avi files.

    I’m not new to this, I just haven’t messed with .mkv files before. Help is appreciated, snarky comments not so much please. :)

    Well as it’s not divX encodage (it’s h264) I don’t think that your DVD player will read it. You could convert it, etc, but I suggest you to download an xvid version. (or divx)…
    To burn an .mkv, well, just burn it :P

    WTF is with MKV files, gotta be the most disappointing thing about these HDDVD rips!!

    Buttfarknothing plays MKV files, Media Center thinks they are sh1t.

    God I won’t be seeding this.. I’ll convert it into a NORMAL format that can be played on 99% of players not the 1% that suck balls.

    Bah.

    That is all.

    For those who downloaded this (and other HD releases) I have a question: The size of this download is reported at 4.42 GB… which is quite higher than a regular DVD-R at 4.37 GB…

    When you unzip/unrar it, does it fit on a regular DVD? In other words, if I want to keep it, will a simple DVD be sufficient, or do I have to splurge for a dual-layer disc?
