Flying car to take off in 2009

A company called Terrafugia is currently developing a plane that transitions into a car. For a mere $148,000 you too can own a Transition. When completed in late 2009, it will have an average cruising speed of 115 mph, gets over 25 mpg in the air. It’s classified as a Light Sport Utility vehicle and weighs only 1320 lbs. It will be powered by a 100 hp, 4-stroke Rotax 912 ULS. This engine is FAA certified to run on both 91+ octane autogas as well as 100LL. The same engine is used to power the rear push-prop and front wheels, using a clutch-based transmission for power selection. The Rotax engine is certified to allow a 5% ethanol mixture.

Cargo and dimensions
The vehicle will have 550 lbs of usable cargo weight in a 20 cubic foot space, which can be divided up among people, bags or fuel. It has a 20 gallon fuel tank which consumes about 120 lbs of fuel. Its maximum range is 460 miles (400 nm) when operating at 75% power, which is required to sustain 115mph cruising speed. When in folded position, the vehicle measures just 6.75 feet high, by 7.5 feet wide, by 18.75 feet long. No data on the wingspan was given, however it could not exceed approximately 35 feet due to the stated dimensions and mechanical operation of the wing through a single central hinge. The internal cabin space is 50 inches wide.

Transition’s wing loading is approximately 8.8 lbs per square foot, which is comparable to light sport or general purpose aviation aircraft. They currently have a working prototype wing design, however it is machine mounted and is not part of the actual aircraft. All of the pictures and images seen are either from a 1/5th scale prototype that was built and flown, or from computer generated animation.

Image

The vehicle goes from 1-2-3, or from 3-2-1 via the push of a button. It must be stopped, engine off, to make the transition. The vertical stabilizers double as rear taillights and indicators. A pilot’s license is required to operate the vehicle, which will have a price tag of approximately $148,000. It will be available in late 2009, with a full-size prototype completed in late 2008. A 1/5th prototype has already been created and flown.

In order to operate the vehicle, the pilot (not the driver) will have to be FAA certified and hold a pilot’s license. Currently only a visual flight rating (VFR) ability is planned, as the on-board instruments will not be sufficient for a full Instrument Rating.

    @ 15 Dry Withered Vulva

I think you’ll find that it’s the US causing problems for the world, namely the small matter of the greatest direct and indirect slaughter of people of any nation in history. The ‘third world’ is exactly this because of the US and other Western colonialists. As for Iran or China causing problems, when was the last time Iran invaded anybody or how many terrorist attacks has China launched against the US?

Making an idiotic flying car, mostly with stolen tech from other countries as the US does with all its inventions is hardly proof of its superiority.

Get this in your head, the US contributes almost NOTHING to the world except misery. Telephone, Airplane, Space Rockets, Computers, Internet etc. all were NOT invented by AMERICANS. I know your tiny brain will point to the Wright Brother’s propaganda when all they did was catapult their crappy plane, it didn’t take off on its own so it doesn’t count, or the fact that the Saturn V had ‘USA’ written on it when it was Von Braun’s rocket, the 100% US rockets were only good for blowing up.

And didn’t Henry Ford figure out how to make cars so cheaply that everyone could afford one?

As for that third world stuff, the US isn’t causing them to starve. They’re problem is they live in a desert, and food doesn’t grow there. So they just need to learn about agriculture.

    ——————————-
“Skyrage” claimed another six lives today when Emma Birdman cut off a fellow sky-commuter during the 5 o’clock traffic jam above Portland, Michigan. Witnesses say Daniel Enispay became visually irate with Birdman following the act. Enispay speed his air vehicle to approximately one-hundred and five miles per hour, rear-ending Birdman, then sending both sky cars into stall and plummet into the school district below. A teacher, two students, and a dog were also killed upon impact. Due to privacy concerns the ground fairing victims names have not been released by law officials. Sources indicate that Birdman may have been talking on her mobile phone at the time of this ill-fated incident. We remind all viewers to please use hands-free mobile converter kits when operating any ground or air based vehicles.

    @25 Eric the Midget
The principal of aerodynamics, and planes, wasn’t invented by the USA merely pasted together what others had thought of by others. The first basic plane was invented by Davinci, Italian, some 350 to 400 years before the Wright Brothers flew one. And at the times when the Wright Brother were building their working model of an aeroplane they were in competition with others around the world. They just won that race because they used the right aerodynamics model while the others were using the wrong model. When the other parties noticed the calculations they were using were the wrong one the Wright Brothers had a head start.
Computers was invented not by the USA but a Frenchman called Blaise Pascal which some of us only know from the coding language know as Pascal.
The USA only refined and build a better one for warfare during the WW2. The needed a machine to decode enemy encoded transmissions. But don’t forget that the UK was using a computer to decode the Enigma code of the Germans.
Henry Ford only perfected mass production and implemented it to automobile production. Keep in mind that with advent of the Industrial Age, late 18th century, good like textiles were being mass produced and at time petrol consuming vehicles weren’t invented yet.
And for the USA not being responsible for the problems in the Third world is another illusion. We in the West are responsible for what happens in the rest of the world.
USA made huge profits from the Third world at the hight of the European colonization. Don’t forget the slavery that only got banned by law after the US civil war(1861–1865) but the US civil war didn’t start to free the slaves but this was later added by Lincoln.
In present day the USA still is responsible, in part, for the well being of the Third world.
The USA citizens, in general, aren’t willing to pay top dollar for their goods. Nor is the US government/business willing to make trade deals that benefit the Third world true fair deals. And not only the US is guilty of unfair trading btw.
And let’s not forget all the manipulation in the Third world the US government has done during the Cold war. The put a lot of dictators in power when the people had elected someone else just because the ideology wasn’t conform the US policy.
As for your comment to ‘So they just need to learn about agriculture’ is to laugh at.
Agriculture is older than the USA is.
Irrigation was used on a massive scale by the Egyptians some 4000bc and they knew what they were doing. The principal hasn’t changed since then.
Not the whole Third world lives in a desert only a fraction of them do. And let’s not forget the amount of ‘Projects’ in the 70′s and 80′s to teach the Third world how farm. Most of them have failed because we, the West, were implemented our way of agriculture in a country that had no use for it.
After the we left all those machines rotted away because they simply didn’t have the skill to maintain them or the cash to do so.
For someone who has access to the Internet you are pretty uneducated in history and how the world looks. The USA isn’t the whole world but a part of it but I think the popular believe in the USA differs from what the rest of the world knows.

    Back to topic.
    NICE!!!!
But a little problem if you live outside the US/Canada…
In many countries there are very strict laws towards flight and I doubt many people are able to get a license to fly one of these gadgets. Let’s not forget the pricetag for getting your flying license next to the pricetag of this gadget.
And remember several articles dating back from the 50′ about these kind of gadgets and still I don’t see the sky filled with flying cars.
I think this will become a novelty item many of us won’t be able to buy next to the fact that it still uses fossil fuel and we are rapidly running out of that. Some 20 years of fossil fuel left on this planet and the progress of non fossil fuel using vehicles is going much slower than that expected.

    @25 Hey Midget,

The computer was invented by a Hungarian, named Neumann. Remember the name? Should not have skipped your math class, right?

Just becasue some things get invented on the same land where currently the US is located, it doesn’t mean it’s American.

The only reason is the US spend the most on R&D.

  50. hikaricore
    November 17th, 2007 | 10:25

    @49

I hate to be that history Nazi person.. but Neumann only created the first “programmable” computer. Computers existed prior to this in various forms, which don’t quite fit today’s definition, but do fit the proper definition of a “computer”.

I’m not arguing that great technology didn’t originate elsewhere, but that you should know you’re right instead of basing internet arguments on half-facts.

You know very well when we talk about computers, we’re talking about the modern day programmable computers, starting with the ENIAC. And you bring up Von Neumann?? From the 40′s?? He was working on the atom bomb with Einstein, another project like the ENIAC, that only could have been fostered in an economic and political environment such as the US. And both men, by the way, were Americans.

  53. wah
    November 17th, 2007 | 10:42

the reason why we have so many problems in this world, at least the ones we can fix, is because rich people spend too much money on useless technology, or space exploration. cars and airplanes are needed because they make everyon’es lives easier for travel but flying cars? how much are the pros outweigh the cons of not feeding starving african kids? it’s better if we all build instant teleporation systems that would make everyone’s lives easier.

    You said:

    “the USA merely pasted together”

“The USA only refined and build a better one”

“Henry Ford only perfected mass production and implemented it to automobile production.”

-Yea, the US didn’t contribute much there!

“The USA citizens, in general, aren’t willing to pay top dollar for their goods.”

-That is correct. That is part of the basis of a free market economy.

“And let’s not forget the amount of ‘Projects’ in the 70’s and 80’s to teach the Third world how farm.”

-Humans have been farming for thousands of years. No one has to teach the third world people how to feed themselves.

I hear quite a bit of bashing and blaming and accusing of the USA, but I don’t hear any mention of a country that does more than the USA to aid the world. The US is a country of only 300 million people, and they supply more aid to the rest of the world than the two largest nations on the planet.

China has 1.3 billion people in it and India has 1 billion people in it, yet do they aid and care for the rest of the world the way the US does?? Those two countries alone make up a third of the population of the whole planet, and yet they can barely feed themselves! The US must be doing something right.

A computer is a device, or human, who does calculations.
The modern day computers you are referring to are based on the work put down by Schickard, Pascal and Babbage.
Without them there wouldn’t be ENIAC and the evolution of modern computers.
And I didn’t bring up Neumann btw.
As to your argument about the political/economic history of WW2 I won’t get started as I want to visit someone today and don’t want to be here the whole typing history lessons for the masses. Or if it flatters you only for you.
WW2 started because of the political, and economic, sanctions placed of Germany after WW1.
The US had a policy not to help too much before it entered WW2 and only after Japan attacked Pearl Harbor.
If Germany hadn’t declared war on the US right after the attack things would have looked different today.
These treaties are widely available for you read. It’s very dry stuff to read but it gives you an insight to how WW2 started and how the US entered it.
And I don’t claim there’s nothing invented in the US. I only say that there’s a big difference between inventing and innovation. The US innovated computers that gave way to modern day computers.
The US innovated planes, cars, mass production, agriculture and loads more technology.
And if you are referring to Einstein as being American then yet again you are mistaken. Einstein was German who fled the Nazi’s before the start of WW2. This was in the 1930′. Later he became American on paper.

You’re history lesson explains nothing about why other countries don’t step up with aid and care for the rest of the world like the US does.

And you reducing the US contributions for those specific inventions to simply “innovating” is laughable. If those little “innovations” hadn’t happened, those inventions wouldn’t be what they are today!

Sure Pascal and Babbage wrote down their theories and built mechanical devices, but the modern computers we use today wouldn’t exist without those US “innovations”. You certainly couldnt play Bioshock on Babbages machine or on Pascal’s thesis.

Sure DaVinci drew a flying machine on a piece of paper, but his azz never left Italian ground. The Wright brothers implemented it as a practical device.

Only the free thinking environment created by the combined economic and political ideologies of the US could lead to such “innovations”.

And I am absolutely not mistaken about Einstein being American. He, like all Americans at one time, were Americans “on paper”.

Think about it yourself, there is a reason people literally die trying to get into this country.

@Eric the Midget: We actually don’t deliver 1/4 what we promise to. We’ve been out-compassioned a number of times. The American Peace Corp, and public donations, is pretty much the main cause of most of the relief you’re thinking about. Corporations rarely-to-never deliver on their promises of aid.

    ROFL… Well i guess you’re screwed now huh…

“Think about it yourself, there is a reason people literally die trying to get into this country.”

Because you make great movies?! Any pauper migrant would be better off in the EU, but, since many of them don’t know that… let us keep it a secret, as we don’t need that kind of pressure on our borders.

And about foreign aid, if you do the math on the “aid” and the amount you steal yearly through your corporations you will see that 3rd world countries are not getting a fair deal. The EU and the USA rip them off constantly and this is how we manage to keep ourselves much better than them.

    By the way, check this:

    http://www.globalissues.org/TradeRelated/Debt/USAid.asp

scroll to the “Foreign Aid Numbers in Charts and Graphs” and check out the ODA numbers. the USA comes in 2nd from last (Greece is behind but i wouldn’t blame them). It only looks good for the USA in raw money. This is why you keep on claiming you do more than others.

The situation is like some guy having a huge fortune and giving away 100$ to the poor and the next guy who works at mcDonalds giving 50$. The rich bastard will claim that he did more and brag (endlessly…) about it. Yet, the effort is not even similar.

Fact is that by GNI the USA is the Mr Ebenezer Scrooge of nations.

Yeah every year they say they are building a new revolutionary project for flying cars… we’re in 2007 now and still I haven’t seen any flying cars around (except once I’ve seen one falling down from a small flyover and it looked like pretty much it was flying for a few seconds but it’s not the same thing). The point is I don’t believe we will be able to see Flying sedans for the next 200 years… at least.

  79. Antiquont
    November 17th, 2007 | 12:53

The flying car sucks because you can’t take off while you’re in stalled traffic, JUST like the crappy one we made in the 50′s.

    I only see humans.
Everyone who sees someone besides a human is a murderer, for you already killed yourself, and now you must kill others. If you want to kill an ‘enemuh’ you -MUST- understand them first. Anything else is just ‘looking for a victim’.

    Here’s a quick test;

Everyone raise your hand. Now, everyone who uses a computer with a CPU manufactured by Intel, AMD or Apple, lower your hands. Of those who are left, lower your hand if your computer uses a graphics card by Nvidia or ATI. Last one; Lower you hand if your country has never sent a man to the moon.

Ok, anyone who still has their hand raised has the right to slag off the USA for its “non-accomplishments”. :)

Im from Germany, and my country has contributed quite a bit to the world. We produce very reliable autos and our electric shavers are to die for. On top of all of that, we have some of the best beer in Europe.

I will not mention our world domination attempts. Although if the US would stop interrupting our attemtps we are sure we could rule Europe eventually.

  97. Chewie

The Africans have children because they can get their children to work for them on their farms to produce more food to feed themselves. The work an individual child does is more than the amount needed to feed them, and so it is profitable to have children. Also because of the high infant mortality rate, many children die and so they need to have more to keep a family.

But they live in an area where the ground is so dry that nothing will grow. It is sand. They have no rain in the desert. Do they understand that no matter what they plant in that sand, there will only be sand there in 100 years?

They need to move to where the food is, it is too expensive for the world to keep bringing food to them.
