First Blu-Ray movie ripped on PlayStation 3

There are people behind your windows who like hacking. Not real hacking in mean of breaking into someone’s computer, but hacking in the way of modding everything tech related and bypassing the usual limits. PS3News reports that hackers have succeeded in ripping a Blu-ray movie disc and PS3 game titles to the internal hard drive. While the 60GB hard drive may seem large enough for a couple of movies, let’s not forget that Blu-ray titles can be as large as 50GB in size, assuming a fully filled dual-layer Blu-ray disc. The movie Talledega Night came to 20.9GB once copied across. Hackers have also succeeded in copying the contents of PS3 discs across.

However, even though hackers may have succeeded in ripping the contents of a variety of PS3 game titles and Blu-ray disc movies, it will likely be some time before they figure a way of cracking the encryption. In fact, part of the reason Blu-ray has been delayed so many times was due to trying to finalise its copy protection measures, so chances are that it could be a long way yet. Even if they do succeed, new copy protection measures can be introduced on newly released Blu-ray titles that will prevent the hack from working on new titles, unlike CSS where once the system is cracked, it is broken for good. But hey, the first step was done, that’s what counts…
