Firefox up to 35% market share in Europe

Microsoft’s Internet Explorer 8 has been available for 18 days and remains the company’s weakest web browser at launch since version 3. While the software now seems to be close to 4% market share, it appears to be unable to stop the bleeding of other IE versions. Since the beginning of the year, Mozilla’s Firefox has picked up more than half of the users IE lost; the other half went to Apple’s Safari and Google’s Chrome. This trend is evident in new market share numbers published by Net Applications and StatCounter, which show that Firefox hit a new record market share in March. On an average basis, IE remains the dominant browser globally, according to Net Applications. However, the market share was 66.82%, the lowest level for IE in about a decade. Firefox marches on and came in at 22.05%, the highest number published by the market research firm so far.

Safari climbed back up to 8.23%, after having dropped to 8.05% in February, and Google’s Chrome continued to gain slightly to 1.23%. For the month, IE was down 0.62 percentage points, Firefox up 0.28 points, Safari up by 0.21 points and Chrome up by 0.08 points. We will leave the Opera browser out of consideration in this article, as its share has always remained between 0.69% and 0.75% over the past year and has not shown substantial gains or losses. Its current share is estimated at 0.71%. We also know that IE is much more popular in the U.S. than it is in the rest of the world – and that IE8 has been adapted much quicker in the U.S. than it has in other geographies (which can be seen, for example, through hourly market share numbers posted by Net Applications.) Also, StatCounter recently reported that Firefox 3 has become the most popular browser with a share of 35.05%, exceeding Internet Explorer 7 (34.54%) for the first time.

firefaux is a memory hogging bloatware. the only reason it gains ground in the market is because of the hype of a few years ago, so that stuck. it was the best 2-3 years ago, now its going the same way as ie.

Btw how many Opera Fanboys know that Opera's embedded profile's search engines carry with them unique identifiers?
    I bet very few.

lol .. I do use FF a lot but no other browser uses so much memory.. after a few websites it uses like 700MB.. I don't think that's normal.

    I love Chromium. It's fast!

Firefox does use alot of memory, but I mainly use FF because of great plugins such as adblock plus and some userscripts. Ads can go to f#cking hell, I'm not gonna stare at stupid banners all day long just to find some information I was looking for.

Ok guys FF uses a lot of memory that's true, but the thing is it stops at ~700mb while IE has memory leaks and carries on.

I think the article about it was even on this site, back when acid3 testing started.

Also a browser does not have to pass acid3, this is just an effort to unite the look of new html/php/webscript/xml/whatever tags.
This effort has an internal deadline, as long as the devs of mentioned browsers get their software ready up to the deadline all will be fine, since most of the tested stuff from the acid3 test will not be seen for quite a while.

Also you can test your browser here: http://acid3.acidtests.org/

my FF has 71/100 and the layout fits, in comparison IE fails the test quite hard, here have a pic:

passing acid3 test is most important thing in browser. I would use opera but i cant cause its just so unstable.

  16. bla
    April 7th, 2009 | 14:21

    @15 juri

Passing acid3 is NOT the most important thing of a browser.
Acid3 is just standardize webdisplay. For example if you use xml tags in an unusal way browsers might render the site diffrently, acid3 is here so that doesn't happen.

The most important thing in a browser is security and support, meaning fast hotfixes for holes.

Ive tried all browsers over the years but I use now opera as I found it to be the quickest.Everyone has their own preference.Ive never had any problems. The current version of 9.64 on Arch Linux is very stable.Failing an Acid 3 test really doesnt bother me.IE would be my least favourite

The memory thing is philosophical question for a programmer:
    1) should you keep your memory footprint as small as possible and make program slower
    2) or use up as much free memory as possible, there's no point keeping just free memory. If system memory runs low you can always give away some of your used memory.. It's like with a car: if engine is running already why not use it for driving?! Computers nowadays often have 2-3 gigs of ram just running free, why not use it? By the way vista has similar approach, that's why it takes more memory often.
I actually like more the first approach. But i can see why FF and Vista use the second one.
Generally I prefer FF, i like the renderings style, also like how FF handles tabs and FF has best collection of add-ons.
I don't like that FF becomes very slow if you actually have browsing history (i like to have 90+ days history). Also it still crashes sometimes (i dont care that its because javascript or bad add on-s), it shouldn't crash the entire browser.
Still prefer FF to Opera, Chrome, IE.

firefox 3.6a1pre (nightly build) got 96/100 on acid3 and is damn fast… memory consumption is about 100-200mb and so it's okay… opera does not have the native look and feel… dont like that…

the ff fanboi who said to use an optimizer to make ff less of a hig…are you serious?

i want a browser that is fast, uses not much memory and blocks ads.

maxthon wins on all those areas. ff is almost last, right after ie. the hype has brainwashed way too many folks and they still think its the nest browser, lol.

I still use netscape navigator it uses hardly any memory and is much faster than IE FF or opera. A few sites do not render properly but it makes up for it in speed and my system resources are completely free. Only an 1d1ot would use FF 700MB lol, IE is good but unsafe, and opera is just junk mostly for thick rimmed glasses wearing hipsters who think they are different for not using FF.

I dare you to have the same extensive extensions library as firefox, you might even say most of them don't work with the latest minefield, but most of them actually do work, you just need to edit the version number in the extension itself and most of them do ^^

    greasemonkey

I use Firefox as it has such nice add-ons. Adblock and Greasemonkey rock. Firebug is very nice to debug javascript. At this moment it takes up 160 MB of RAM whith 8 opened tabs. No problem for me (1,5 GB RAM, most people have more).

opera maybe have few % in world overall but many European countries got crazy big shares of opera browser.

    Russia example:
    http://gs.statcounter.com/#browser-RU-monthly-200903-200903-bar

in my country opera got 15%, unlike USA where opera is limping at the end, but since this article is about Europe and FF its not fair to leave opera out when its 3th most used browser in Europe.

  41. anonymous
    April 7th, 2009 | 19:46

yeah Opera is just.. meh? I don't have anything bad or good to say about it.

I've been a Firefox user for many years, but I'm sick of how slow FF3 is. Started out fast in 3.0, then slowed down a lot. I'm not unique in this situation, btw.

Not even disabling extensions helped. Some tweaking did help..
But why should I need to do ANY of this, when Google Chrome and IE8 are a lot faster out of the box, and it's safe to assume they don't 'degrade' over time like FF.

  42. HotSexyChromeDome
    April 7th, 2009 | 19:58

I use Chrome with AdMucher, mainly cause the browser starts up fast, loads pages fast, and you can see more of the screen than with other browsers.

I overclocked my Athlon 5000+ BE CPU from 2.6ghz to 3.2ghz (STABLE) but none of the browsers, Seamonkey, Firefox, Opera, Chrome could handle the increased processing. All crashed. I'm using Win 7 build 7057 x64 version. It's too bad these browsers are still stuck in 32bit. 7's good, the browsers are lacking,

Yeah I noticed the latest version of FF is sucking up insane amounts of resources. Incidentally I had to dumb down the CPU to get the browsers agreeable again.

CAUSE PASSING THE ACID3 TEST IS THE UTMOST IMPORTANT THING IN A BROWSER!
STOP RATING BROWSERS BASED ON HOW THEY DO ON THAT TEST.

THE ADVANCED SCRIPTS USED IN THE ACID TESTS PROBABLY WON'T BE SEEN FOR SOME TIME IN ORDINARY WEBSITES.

    /capslock

Also stop shunning firefox, you opera hoes, cause it takes up 500 whatever mbs of ram. Firefox takes up nowhere close to that. My firefox only takes up like 100mb after I have ran it for at least an hour. And it's not like 100mb is a lot. Today's computers have at least 1 gb of ram, so don't emphasize 1/10 of your ram as a lot.

Doesn't this acid test depend on whether your browser is on its default settings?? Which is why people are posting pics of their test results with different results??

    Just wondering…

I've tried Opera – didn't like it – I use FF mostly because of the add-ons. I stopped using IE last year, tried Opera (not my browser) and only use FF. Yea it crashes on me alot but only when I have like 8 things downloading at once (which is often) :)
