Firefox 3.0 is out, first mirrors & dead servers

After several beta releases and a planned bid for the Guinness Book of World Records, Firefox 3.0 has arrived. As of 1pm EDT Tuesday, users can download the latest version of the open-source browser, which includes an improved book marking system and drop-down search returns in the URL bar, among other features. Aesthetically, the browser is not drastically different from its predecessor. The forward and back buttons have been altered, while the browser buttons and window frames have also been redesigned to conform to the look of a user’s operating system, but not much else has changed. On the features front, the drop-down URL bar—dubbed the Awesome Bar—offers suggestions of possible Web sites as you type your search query.

Version three offers a three-tier bookmarking system: bookmark stars allow for one-click favorites; bookmark tags allow you to add details to your favorites; and bookmark folders are saved searches that update when you add new items matching that search to your bookmarks, according to Mozilla. Download manager has also been revamped and now includes the ability to pause and resume downloads, search through downloaded files, obtain more detailed file information, and revisit the original download page. Firefox 3.0 also boasts improved color profiles, font and text rendering, and zooming capabilities, as well as malware and phishing protection, Mozilla said.

Version 3.0 is three years in the making. Mozilla released the first beta version of Firefox 3.0 in November 2007, with version two debuting a month later. Beta 3.0 version 3 arrived in February with major code rewrites of the page layout, graphics, and font engines and over 350 plugged memory leaks. Most recently, Mozilla on June 5 unveiled the second release candidate for Firefox 3 with several localization updates. That came a little over two weeks after RC1 was made available. When the download goes live on Tuesday, the clock will start ticking on Mozilla’s bid to break a Guinness world record for most downloads in a single day. Mozilla said last week on its blog that it has already received at least one million pledges from users who say they will download Firefox 3 on release day.

Update: the final version of Firefox 3 is out now for more than 20 minutes, but it’s basically impossible to get it at the moment – all download servers are overloaded with thousands of requests and the official website for Download day times out for few hours already. We will bring you first mirrors in comments when they’re available, feel free to check 10 Reasons why you should update in the meantime.

Feel free to post your Firefox 3.0 is out, first mirrors & dead servers torrent, subtitles, samples, free download, quality, NFO, rapidshare, depositfiles, uploaded.net, rapidgator, filefactory, netload, crack, serial, keygen, requirements or whatever-related comments here. If you can’t wait to get it off the site. You can always download it from Mozilla later when their servers aren’t busy, so that you can add to the download count.

No you do not. You can just install over the previous version. Some people do not prefer to do this because it causes some glitches – i.e with video drivers for one – but in Firefox’s case you are safe to just install over #2.

And they built a new world in their own image as promised by the sacred words, and spoke of the beast with their children. Mammon awoke, and lo! it was naught but a follower.

I got through on the main server and updated from my rc3 to Final. I really like FF3 over FF2. I do love that address bar. When you start to type, it not only searches addresses in your cache for things you’re typing, but also page titles (eg. if you type “wres,” it’ll pull up both http://www.wrestling.com AND http://www.mynwn.com, which has a page title about wrestilng). It definitely runs faster than FF2. They are right about Acid3 though, as it only scores a 70/100.

Because the Firefox homepage is swamped with queries right now, I decided to re-host it, for those who want to use the (best) browser.

Recommend you download NoScript, and AdBlock with Filterset.G addons, to keep you 100% secure on the net from key loggers and what not, and keep things ad-free.

You’re all seeing version 2 on the download page because they haven’t updated the page right. The download link points to the latest release but the biggest thing on the page which everyone sees first hasn’t been changed. Still says 2 in big and black instead of 3 !

But it’s all good since the links point to the latest version.

    2 million downloads so far.

I’m not liking it, preferred version 2.

    Firefox 3 Vulnerability Found

Nancy Gohring, IDG News ServiceWed Jun 18, 8:00 PM ET

Five hours after Mozilla officially released Firefox 3.0, researchers found a vulnerability in the new browser.

Tipping Point has verified the bug and reported it to Mozilla, Tipping Point said on Wednesday.

Since Mozilla is still working on a fix, the researchers won’t share details about the problem. Tipping Point ranked the severity of the vulnerability as high, but said that users would have to click on a link in an e-mail or visit a malicious Web page before being affected. The issue affects users of Firefox 3.0 as well as Firefox 2.0.

Once the problem is fixed, Tipping Point will publish an advisory on its Web site, it said.

Tipping Point found out about the vulnerability through its Zero Day Initiative, which lets researchers earn cash by submitting new vulnerabilities to the company. Once Tipping Point validates the issue, it pays the researcher for the information and notifies the relevant software vendor of the technical details.

Mozilla did not respond to a request for comment.

Mozilla launched its newest browser on Tuesday along with a marketing stunt that went a bit wrong. The company announced that it wanted to set a Guinness World Record for the largest number of software downloads in a 24-hour period. However, the volume of downloads crippled Mozilla’s site, and so customers in the U.S. couldn’t begin downloading the software until two hours later than expected. Still, Mozilla said it logged more than 8 million downloads within 24 hours. There is currently no record for number of software downloads in a day, but Mozilla must now wait for review of the stunt by Guinness officials.

@189 oblodo: hah, ur clueless and don’t even understand the meaning of bloat. In-built functionality, which is only activated if you want to; which don’t take up any resources if you don’t activate then; which even if activated use extremely little resources; which if compared to the firefox extensions most ppl install anyway cuz they want the same functionality pwns them tenfold in resouces efficiency != bloat.

Not that there is anything wrong with Firefox, although most ppl seem to live somewhere up in the skies believing firefox is made by a non-profit organisation with the sole goal of lifting u even higher up in the sky, lolz to that. Go firefox.. yay…

Oh and did I mention that Opera wins and that Firefox is made by a commercial company?
