Releaselog

Firefox 3 release date set: June 17

Mozilla has set June 17 as the official release day for Firefox 3. The introduction of the new browser marks the beginning of a race for the title of the fastest browser on the market. With more than one million people already pledged to download Firefox 3 on the first day of its release, Firefox 3 could set a Guinness World Record as the most downloaded software with the first 24 hours of launch. Mozilla has set next Tuesday, June 17, as the official release day for the upgraded Firefox 3 browser, following months of beta testing and release candidates that have been publicly available to users over the past few weeks. Firefox 3 will be shipped for both Mac and Windows on the same day.

Firefox 3 has already won critical acclaim for its reliability and noticeable performance improvements. It Besides code optimization, Firefox 3 brings numerous new features, including one-click bookmarking and tag support in bookmarks, smart location bar, the ability to save and restore browser sessions, smart zoom that enlarges all web page content (not just text) and significantly improved protection against phishing attacks and malware. Mozilla claims that Firefox 3 has 15,000 tweaks and enhancements when compared to Firefox 2. The official release of Firefox appears to be also launching the beginning the battle for the fastest browser on the market. The JavaScript engine seems to be the primary battlefield for now, as the scripting interpreter optimization directly translates to user-visible speed gains in Web 2.0 sites and Web applications that run faster and show more a responsive user interface.

    already testing the beta, seems pretty good, you can tell a few glitches in the beta though e.g if you refresh a page the next time it loads there is always an error.

    hopefully the full working version will be avaliable on the 17th june ey..

    If you havent already jumped to F3 betas and RC’s your missing some great stuff, nevertheless the final is out soon and Mozilla once again will reign supreme. Opera is great but has nothing on Firefox powerful addons system, too many good addons to list that skyrocket your web experience, so what are you waiting for?, go ahead and grab the Release Candidate.

    Sounds like a good deal, right? All you have to do is get Firefox 3 during Download Day to help set the record for most software downloads in 24 hours – it’s that easy. We’re not asking you to swallow a sword or to balance 30 spoons on your face, although that would be kind of awesome.

    Already added a pic for it on my website.

    Tried a new one I’m developing in internet explorer 8 which works perfectly in 7, Firefox, opera, safari etc…TOTALLY FUDGED!

    Tried it in FF3, expecting similar problems…oh…Guess what? It’s perfect.

    I don’t need more convincing than that. As a developer, I always feel as though firefox & safari are easiest to develop for. I seem to have a few problems with opera, despite it’s fairly good reputation. I really hope this knocks microsoft off it’s perch.

    Microsoft would be doing the whole world a favour if they just scraped including IE with their OS and included a better alternative. I doubt this would affect their domination at all, but everyone would be better off.

    hope all the awesome extensions work here with little or no problem! i’ve been using opera 9.5 since yesterday and it is quite nice. i like the fact that when u zoom in, everything gets bigger (not just the text size). also, speeddial works very well. the interface is also very new to me and it is attractive. my biggest gripe with it is its lack of something like AdBlock. it has its own that you could use but it doesnt seem to be as effective as the one that is available in firefox. some cool features i did notice: integrated IRC and bittorent. standard features rock. glad i have so many alternatives. currently i got 3 web browsers: epiphany, firefox, and opera. pleased with all. cant wait to try firefox 3.

    The problem I see is Mozilla’s constant failure to care about addons. Why is it so hard to make them stay compatible from version to version.

  27. Cim
    June 13th, 2008 | 13:03

    @xacco
    Don’t uninstall, just run the installer and takes care of everything. At least that’s how the release candidates work, I’m assuming final will be the same.

    @mupet0000
    They do that to ensure that everything works as intended, not necessarily because it can’t work. As long as someone updates them semi-regularly it’s not a problem. With this new version they apparently did a lot of changes to how add-ons work, so that’s why a lot of them needs updates. Out of the 12 add-ons I use though, only 1 is currently not updated for 3.0. So it’s coming along nicely.

    The best part of FF3 is the memory handling specifically for tabs. I have alot of tabs open (over 100 at a time) and FF2 use to consume over 600 megs of memory. In FF3 I rarely have it shoot over 300 megs (usually in the 200-250megs range). I love it!

    Cool but for me I prefer Opera. In MY Computer, in MY internet connection speed Opera is fastest to me.
    I love its tabs and the no load back button and speed dial. Those are great features.
    Dont get me wrong I have FireFox and as well as Safari but I mostly like Opera (I also have IE but no need to mention that eh ;)

    i love opera and downloaded the new 9.5 which is very good

    but i have been using ff3 since the early beta days with currently rc3 which is quite good

    so i really dont see the reason any one with a sane mind should use IE or safari as firefox and opera both are very good in response times and easy usage which i think is the first thing a browser should do good

    anyways i will download the new one on june 17th for sure call it be a part of history or whatever

    June 13th, 2008 | 13:56

    Great news!

    Only reason I’m not using the Fx3 RC is that Mozilla made a stupid change when they released their new Addons page. They removed the info about what version each addon supports. So now you have to download the Fx3 RC and then try each of your addons to find out if they are working. Instead of just being able to tell from a single text line on each addon page.

    I’ll download Fx3 on releaseday for sure, but I might wait a couple of days to install it to make sure all my addons will be working.

    Beware of outdated plugins. I’m sure many will update for the final release but I had to remove the release candidate because almost every single one of my plugins refused to work with it at the time. Just install into a different folder and see what happens before uninstalling 2.0.0.14. Or just wait a week or two, I guess.

  66. Anon
    June 14th, 2008 | 01:42

    @70

    Maxthon maybe is a best and lightest browser or what not that you claim it to be. However Firefox along with some plugins make firefox the SAFEST browser for surfing the web with.

    I play a few MMO’s and there has been hax going around which use browser exploits to hack people’s accounts. These hacks varies from iFrames to Flash!

    Firefox has protected me through these rough times when there is so many unsafe pages around on the web. Even if you think its safe, you never know when hackers have compromised the site!.

    I have read various forums which discussed people who got their accounts hacked, Everybody mentioned what browser they used… and there was not 1 post mentioning somebody using Firefox and got haxed…. This shows that firefox is indeed the most safest browser on the web!

    You can go off and use your maxthon or what ever, however i value my computer security therefore i will be continuing to support Firefox in their efforts.

    Another Opera fan here too, but I’ll give FF3 a try. I like the tweaks in Opera – I use mouse movements to close a tab and go to either the tab to the right or left of the one I close. I couldn’t get an older FF to do it the way I like. I’ve probably saved a year of my life with Opera. :p

    dont be fooled by the opera people telling you its faster than fire fox

    http://www.osnews.com/story/19811/Browser_Benchmark:_IE_Firefox_Opera_Safari

    “Overall, and taking the performance of the beta versions into consideration, the browser performance rankings are as follows: Firefox and Safari in a clear lead ahead of Opera and finally Internet Explorer. Firefox 3, due in June, promises very good performance and efficient memory usage. No browser used less memory to open multiple sites than the Beta 5 version of Firefox 3, and only a few sites failed to display correctly. Safari and Opera, however, are more likely to exhibit incompatibilities.”

    want more proof, heres a 7 page review of all 3 browsers including there betas. this also has chart and charts of benchmarks to prove to you firefox is faster than opera.

    Opera has had that forever. Funny how Firefox keeps getting it’s “new” features from Opera. Restoring sessions after a crash? Been using that for years with Opera.

    Minefield vs. Firefox 3?

    Minefield is the code name that was used for the Trunk nightlies behind Firefox 3.0 for over a year until it branched a while ago. Now there is the 1.9.0mozilla Branch nightlies (3.0.x) and the bleeding edge 1.9.1 Trunk nightlies for Firefox 3.1 and both are still labeled Minefield when the 1.9.0mozilla Branch should probably be relabelled to the “Gran Paradiso” codename for Firefox 3.0, just like the BonEcho codename for Firefox 2.0 and 1.8branch nightlies so as to reduce confussion.

    The Ubuntu made version is NOT the Final as it is based on the RC2 source. “RC#” is not added to the version number because it could end up being the Final release. It does look like the RC3 (was really a Mac release mainly) could be the final though.

    Just because Opera had some things similar does Not mean Mozilla stole the idea(s) from Opera for Firefox. And Opera was Not the first to have Tabs and besides it is a MDI browser. Also since Opera is a Suite rather than a web browser, it would be better compared to the suite “SeaMonkey” (think Mozilla 1.7.x) at http://www.seamonkey-project.org/
