Firefox 3: 8 million downloads already

Firefox 3, the recently released open source browser from Mozilla, has claimed that over 8 million copies of the software were downloaded on Download Day. The company stated early that their goal was to surpass the initial release of Firefox 2, at 1.6 million downloads in 24 hours, and hit 5 million downloads. The goal of the marketing campaign is to set a Guinness World Record for most downloaded software in a single day. A few days have passed and, barring the server downtime that plagued users for a few hours, the results look promising for Mozilla’s world record attempt. According to the official Mozilla blog, Firefox 3 easily cruised past 5 million user downloads. “We exceeded 8 million downloads in our 24 hour period,” the blog states. Downloads were tracked from 11:16am PDT on June 17th to 11:16am PDT on the following day.

The next step in the process is for Firefox 3 to be certified by Guinness World Records. To help get their audit logs in order, Mozilla has brought on two external judges: Paul Vixie, of the Internet Systems Consortium, and Corey Shields, of the University of Indiana’s University of Information Technology Services. Once the two judges and Mozilla feel confident that their download logs are in order, they will be handed over to the people at Guinness World Records for verification. If the attempt is verified, Firefox 3 will be the first recipient of the most software downloaded in a single day record. The process of having a record certified by Guinness can take two different paths. If Mozilla chooses not to expedite the service, the results will be released in four to six weeks. On the other hand, if the company opts for Fast Review, the results could be available in three days from the time the logs are submitted.

They make software which is so popular it gets downloaded 8milllion times in 24 hours and they worry about a little record? -Which is easily gonna be broken by any software in the future since there will simply be more internet users..

I switched to opera a few months back because whenever I would download a large file with firefox, it would always crash for a few minutes when it got to 100%. Firefox would also freeze up my computer and use 99% CPU when I open up too many tabs or more than 3 flash videos at once. This doesn’t happen with opera. I tried the latest version yesterday and both of those glitches still happen to me…

If there were no other third party browsers, you were stuck with a crappy version of IE. Thanks to FF, Opera, Safari, … IE became what it is today. On the other hand, i can’t find one single reason why people should use the built-in IE browser instead of FF, Opera, …

Omg, 8 million people downloaded a free, 7MB file on the same day? Wow, that must mean something, because obviously nobody risks wasting so much bandwidth on something they might not like these days! Hey, MicroSoft says that 120 million copies of Vista were sold the first year, that probably makes it the best OS ever made, right?

Do you know nothing? FF 3 has been completely rebuild from the ground up. Did you not even to bother to read the changes that Mozilla have made to 3.0? Read it here and THEN tell me is the same as 2:

    http://www.mozilla-europe.org/en/firefox/3.0/releasenotes/

    FF3[or 2]>IE[all version]

IE is the worst browser on the planet and anyone using it should be shot!

Best FF Add-On EVER = Adblock Plus. It will block almost every ad on the internet and you can block ANY images/flash/JS script you want. Get it from their home page:

    http://adblockplus.org/en/

I didn’t even know that RLSLOG had ads until I reinstalled Vista and was using IE7 before I installed FF2 and Adblock.

guys, it’s really good to see freeware faring so well. myself, i’m an opera guy. using the 9.5 now and I must say that it really pleases me. the only problems are some webpages that appear to not have been well optimized for it. Also, when it comes to e-banking, i have to use IE… sad, but true.
And yes, i know how to edit opera’s preferences for a specific webpage (identify as IE) but it just isn’t working. any ideas?

for me, best things came with FF3 are
    1. great memory management . ( ff2 was memory eater ) .
    2. speed .
for ff2 add-on, when u install ff3 over ff2, most of your add-on will break( bookmarks are safe, tested ) , there is a faq on the net how to avoid it , google it .

FF3.0 and Opera 9.5 are amazing browsers, it’s amazing to see how much they progressed these last years.

Still need IE for certain websites, the sad thing is it’s always for supposedly very secure sites, something’s wrong here don’t you think?

Expressing Own argument is okkk, bt hating others opinion is not a good habit.
This New Opera 9.50 Is 260% faster then previous 9.20.
This New FF3 Is 200% faster then FF2.
New IE 8 Beta is just awesome, it just have lots bug, so expect a great one when final version come.
Those r not my opnion, those r test result.

Bt one thing for sure All those new version use less, noticable low memeory to run.
I myself opened 10 same page in both FF3 & Opera 9.50. Opera used less then 100MB RAM memory while FF3 just over 100MB.
Bt Opera’s problem for webmaster or blogger is it dont have any function to save form other then logins and its just like ancient. BT both FF3 n IE8 is improved. And Opera handle CSS n scripting in different way, it cant do copy to clipboard for any media content as it loads in different way. Bt Opera is really faster. So its awesome For new and normal user.
ANd still all ASP n JSP script run awesome n faster in IE8.
    So all is Much Improved.

Everyone has to try it, you’ll see exactly how fast everything loads, its ridiculously fast, RSlog loads instantly now compared to in 2 – 3 seconds in Firefox 2.0.11

There are no more memory leaks either.

THE ONLY PROBLEM IS: It STILL uses alot of memory, its supposed to use less, but infact it is much more then Firefox 2.0.11 and that does not mean Firefox 2.0.11 was any better at memory management.

Such a shame they can’t sort it out.

    I’m not sure what you’re talking about…
Opera has its own ad-block thing built in and also blocks pop-ups by default. And they got rid of their ad banner a long time ago.
Anyway, the more web sites become standards supporting and work in ANY browser, the better the world will become. Then people can choose a browser based on its quality and now which sites have been made that prefer only certain browsers.
