FiOS from Verizon: Fire at home?

A Warrington couple is suing Verizon Communications Inc., claiming the company’s workers started a fire while installing a fiber optic line at their apartment. The smoke damage and chemicals used to put out the fire on Sept. 6 destroyed their possessions, they say. Daniel Wood and Dawn Sammler say Verizon workers were installing a FiOS line at their apartment on Joseph Road while Sammler was in the hospital with the couple’s newborn baby. According to the suit, the workers hit a Peco electric line, and smoke from the fire and chemical residue from the effort to fight the fire destroyed all of their belongings. The belongings included baby gifts they had just received and Wood’s breathing machine to treat his sleep apnea. In the lawsuit filed in county court, Wood, 26, and Sammler, 22, say that Verizon representatives promised the company would provide housing for them at the company’s expense until they could find a new place to live.

On Friday, Verizon offered to pay the couple $1,800, said their attorney, Andrew Cotlar. He said the couple lost about $58,000 worth of belongings. Meanwhile, Wood and Sammler and 2-month-old Layla still are living in a hotel in Horsham. Though Dawn had Layla’s car seat in her car when the fire occurred, they lost all of the baby’s clothes, diapers, food and gear, in addition to their own things. “I want them to be liable for what they’ve done,” Wood said, of Verizon. “It’s been a major inconvenience.” At least one other case of a fire caused by Verizon FiOS installers has been publicly reported. John Wilen, a former business reporter for this newspaper who now writes for The Associated Press, wrote an article describing his experience with FiOS. The installers also drilled through a wall and hit an electrical wire, knocking out the power and leaving the electrical box — and the front of his house — smoking. I guess I should be quite lucky for my safe cable connection…

    I feel for them and hope they get what’s due from Verizon for the replacement of their stuff, but this is what insurance is for (in this case, renter’s insurance).

    Eventually, Verizon would be liable for all the damages that resulted from their negligence, but the insurance company would take care of the upfront costs and then go after Verizon.

    Of coruse, some insurance companies are better than others, so you could have just as much trouble with them as you would dealing directly with Verizon.

    Ummmmm OK i don’t get it. FIOS is still the best internet connection in the US, i would get it even if there is a 1 in 6,000,000 chance that the tech may burn my house down. It wont be offered in my area for at least another year or two so until then i just have to deal with my 15000/2000 connection and be happy :)

    $58,000 worth of possessions in your apartment…… O RLY?

    seriously $58,000 is doable.. I mean after my B&O stereo with the old but still great penta’s, 52″ lcd, a/v equipment, computer, etc.. it can surprisingly add up then add the dvd collection.. umm yeah it goes up and up.. but yeah I think insurance does cover at least a portion of it.

    @willy

    …who in this day and age gives a crap about marriage, which is after all an invention of the church in order to grant chatel status to a woman and to indicate that she “belongs” to a man….

    ..you wish that these people died in the fire….

    ..i wish you and your self important opinionated kind are darwined out of the equasion…and i`m FAR more likley to get my wish that your are.

    …sleep aponea is a medical disorder as is evidenced by the fact the guy has MEDICAL EQUIPMENT to help him with it….

    ..and as for complaining to the media… unfortunately thats what you have to do these days to get companies to listen to you, when they can afford expensive lawyers and the public cant then the only way to bring them to heel is to expose and shame them in the way they deseve..

    ..i hope that you lose everything you own one day and get offered a pittance for it and you might know how these people feel..

    …if i were them i`d be asking for punitive damages for the distess caused to them by being offered such a palty sum.
