Filesonic Kills File-Sharing Service After MegaUpload Arrests

Filesonic, one of the Internet’s leading cyberlocker services, has taken some drastic measures following the Megaupload shutdown and arrests last week. In addition to discontinuing its affiliates rewards program and not yet paying accrued money to members, the site has disabled all sharing functionality, leaving users only with access to their own files.

To users of systems like BitTorrent, file-sharing means just that – the sharing of files with others. But this weekend users of Filesonic, one of the Internet’s leading cyberlocker services, sharing files is currently a thing of the past.

According to a shock announcement by the site, all file-sharing functionality has now been disabled, leaving current users only with access to files that they have personally uploaded. Many hundreds of thousands (probably millions) of links all around the web have now been rendered useless, at least temporarily.

But the bad news for the site’s users doesn’t end there. In the last few hours, before file-sharing was disabled, Filesonic also ended its rewards program, meaning that uploaders to the site no longer earn money when people download their files. A moot point perhaps, since no-one will be downloading files anyway.

However, there is the matter of what will happen to the reward money that was sitting in uploader’s accounts before the rewards program was discontinued. Will it be paid out, or will it simply disappear? Many users fear the latter.

This combination of news all adds up to a pretty big deal. Filesonic isn’t just some also-ran in the world of cyberlockers. The site is among the top 10 file-sharing sites on the Internet, with a quarter billion page views a month.

While there has been no official explanation from the site as to why the above actions were taken, all eyes are turned towards events of the last week – the closure of Megaupload and the arrest of its founder and management team.

Like Megaupload, Filesonic appears to based in Hong Kong and it’s clear that the authorities there already worked with the US government to shut down Kim Dotcom’s operations and seize his assets there. Filesonic is also believed to have some US-based servers.

In December, Filesonic announced it had partnered with Vobile, a provider of content identification services. All uploads to the service were said to be being checked for copyright infringement before users were able to share them publicly, although it is unclear if this system was ever implemented by the site.

The events of the last week have turned the cyberlocker world upside down and there is quite literally panic among users and site operators. Stay tuned for our detailed report tomorrow – the Megaupload takedown appears to be a game-changer.

If you can’t make any money from uploading files and sharing links, there’s little incentive to do so. And the content availability networks that currently exist are being cut off from the source of their income. Unless they can find another means to make money sharing their.. ahem.. materials… The incentive to do so has been completely removed.

Kind of a bummer for people like me who don’t intend to make money from this whole arrangement.

My filesonic premium is ending on the 25th, so no loss. It was 30 days, for this very reason. Ive been going back to torrents for the last few months. I didn’t want to toss coin at file sharing sites anymore. Id say 1/3 of the time I was downloading wrong episodes, etc. But I had contemplated getting a 3 month account around Xmas because the prices were so low through affiliates. Glad I didn’t…

I’m not clear on what’s going down with this…. is filesonic cutting stuff off out of fear they will run into the same problem as megaupload or are they doing this as a protest over what the U.S. did with megaupload? I’d be interested in finding out what their motivation is to be cutting off U.S. ip addresses.

See guys? THIS is why we don’t PAY for these services. No way would I ever give my credit card info to these guys. 1st it’s a waste of money, 2nd, it gives the feds your info too, when they eventually get raided. I know you have to pay to upload but you should really be using one of those untraceable prepaid cards or something. I’m not very smart, tee hee.

But I do feel bad for you guys who just got memberships with these places, that totally sucks and I hope you can get your money back somehow.

I just hope GlumboUploads doesn’t get shut down, I’m so in love with them right now. They seem VERY similar to Megaupload and I hope that they don’t get shut down and that more people start uploading to them.

    late 90′s early 2000
    napster to kazaa

    early to mid 2000
    bitorrent to bitcomet to utorrent
    -supernova to torrentspy to piratebay/isohunt/btjunkie

Many of you may not realize this, but sometime BEFORE Y2K MySpace was actually a filesharing site before it was a social networking site. Us old timers used to trade PSX and Dreamcast games through MySpace. The only other alternative was to have TopSite access and FXPing the files to hacked FTPs on the net. Any unsuspecting Windows PC with an un-patched IPC$ share became a rogue file server to disseminate all the current releases at the time. Many of us old hackers used to set up port scanners on old linux boxes just to hunt for open IPC$ ports on IPs with vulnerable PCs. Over the years, Microsoft patched those IPC$ vulnerabilities and files were transported through torrent, newsgroups, and filesharing sites like FileSonic and MegaUpload.

I’ve always wondered how long it would take for certain governments to get wise to the fact that filesharing sites increase the odds of copyright infringement. Torrents are easily tracked, while SSL newsgroup access is more secure.

What I find interesting is that not one media outlet has mentioned what’s happened MegaUpload’s customer list. Mark my words, anyone who has ever been paid by a filesharing site like MegaUpload or FileSonic will soon become of interest to the American FBI. As accepting money for “filesharing” shows intent to profit from copyrighted works. How do the feds know if files are copyrighted material? Easy.. sites like RLSLOG publicly display the links to those files. It’s really a no-brainer..

Although I’m sad to see MegaUpload, FileSonic, and many other filesharing sites disappear, I’m not surprised at the outcome. I’m just surprised it hasn’t happened sooner. There are more secure and less intrusive ways of getting your files.

Looks like it’s back to the drawing board so to speak…

    January 23rd, 2012 | 06:20

They must of made millions at filesonic, if you were one of them wouldn’t you want to be able to enjoy it before it was taken off you, or worse end up in jail. This gravey train could never last that long, but the sharing community will life on and evolve, I hope at least.

Good riddens. All these sites that directly have the files the should be shut done. I remember the days before napster when you had to go through IRC to get your stuff. Nobody bothered with hackers back then because it was too difficult for the average person to do it.

I’d even be happy just to only use torrents again. With the amount of people sharing, torrents could be spread really fast these days with all these file lockers out of the picture.

Oron gives speeds of 80kb for US users.

Filepost gives speeds of 140kb for US users.

So basically, this entire site just became ? because of download speeds.

The top hosters, which carry the top speeds, have thrown in the towel.

If money wasn’t an issue, I’m sure we could use other hosts… but money seems to control the upload scene as far as “File Lockers” go.

Which when you think about it, is messed up. Scene groups usually promote buying the products offered by them and as well, are usually against profiting from it. It’s no longer a “scene” when vast amounts of money dirty the sharing image that we try to uphold.

It was bound to happen. Personally, I always thought a affordable system of purchasing books, comics, movies and music would be the optimal solution (However I find offensive that DC charges 3 dollars a digital comic when they avoid the printing, shipping and handling). I never was a fan of the DDL system, always been a fan of the torrent method, it looks cleaner.

Filesonic had already decided to kill their file sharing services BEFORE the megaupload incident. They emailed people who stored (and shared) a lot of files with them at the beginning of the month and told them they needed to look for a new file host.

The reason why Fileserve and the many other file hosts terminated their affiliate program is due to the fact that they don’t want to be charged with organized crime like Megaupload did.

i think that if the film music companies should charge less, they would get more profit in long term due to higher turnover
i mean do actors really deserve all of that wealth,
there are many other people who perform more difficult jobs for lot less money
pay the actors/producers less and lower costs of film
then i buy them not download
    further to this
a simple solution for these companies is to go like napster
tie in with the downloaders and do it leagaly and pay subscription, cheaper and the film company doesnt loose out

    further to that
    the meta needs to change
its been forever that films come out in cinema, then 6 months later dvd then 2 yrs later tv
    needs to change
cinema is great but i say after 2 months, allow people to watch it at home for a flat rate, then i wouldnt download.

lovefilm has the right idea, unlimited titles for a decent amount per month, now gone digital. take note of this film companies and remove the middle man (love film) and profit more

further to that its stupid that american tv series take a year to come out in uk, change that too , incoporate into a monthly sub fee and they would profit more

hr (sry for spelling/gramma been up for 30 hrs)

I think we need to strike back. Don´t buy music, films and books. Don´t go into the cinema. Shun iTunes and similar services.

There are so many upload links because everyone wants to get paid a few cents.

But now there is no incentive for most uploaders.

One a few are truly generous enough to upload without getting paid.

I want to thank those who upload to megashares, rapidshare, mediafire, and other sites that have crappy or no affil payouts.
    Thanks for sharing the wealth.

Chances of getting your money back for months left to go 0%

FileSonic retains the right to create and revise limits on use, storage, upload and download speeds, sharing, maximum number and duration of look-ups or downloads and any other aspect of the Service, at its sole discretion and at any time, with or without notice.

@101 Common Sense : Hear hear

For those who think you can get your money back from Filesonic for failing to provide you the service you paid for. Good luck. They are still offering the service you paid for. To upload and download file.
When you started to complain about money back did you mention you to them you wanted it back because you are unable to download warez under the new rules?
    I don’t think so.

Most have forgotten one basic rule : Warez are free. You don’t ask money for it or earn money from it.

And if you think that there are plenty of hosting sites left where you can earn money. Think again. I’m pretty sure more will follow and close their reward system in due time.

And one funny after thought to this…If there is a money trail you can be found. XD

I never trusted Filesonic. Wupload will be next if it’s not gone already. They all were too aggressive going for market-share, their affiliate programs were too generous and they’ve drawn too much attention to themselves.

Good sites still working, Rapidshare, 4shared, Mediafire (not for rared/zipped milti-parts though, they corrupt sometimes on Mf servers). X7.to is pretty good for me, megashares is one of the old-boys too.

I want to mention one I used a few times recently, it maxes my connection as a free-user (1.19Mb/s) is Filekeen. I’ve never seen a filekeen link on Rls,but it could be a good one to pick going forward.

Yes- because it’s so much easier for the lovely people who shut down Megaupload to find you when you’re connected through a torrent. They might not be bothered to track down every single person but with a torrent, they won’t have to.

I wish people would use their common sense- why go after Megaupload rather than the Pirate Bay and various torrent sites first? Because you can’t track every single person who is downloading directly, like you can with a torrent and all their other weapons- so much less effective on a direct download.

Count on it- it’s a predatory tactic, the protected area is ruined so like grazing animals- downloaders are herded into torrents- unprotected and unaware. Believe me, that’s when they will make a bloody example of every downloader they can find and it won’t be pretty.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Filesonic and Fileserve had recieved threats from the same group that shut down Megaupload.
You just have to hit one, to get a cascade to move all your pieces poised to attack.

Ok I am going to write this without editing. I have years of legal experience and also develop Desktop/Andriod apps as well; iPhone fans blow me. Everyone needs to relax. In a few months’ time the filesharing companies will prevail just like SOPA. Legal arguments like this must take place to establish precedence. If you have been following the heath care debate in America you know a bunch of states have ruled the legislation is unconstitutional. Nothing that has taken place so far means a thing until the Supreme Court makes a decision. Same applies to MegaUpload and company. All the arrests and speculation has tuned the entire Internet upside down. The reality is this; each file sharing service makes it clear that they do not support pirated storage. You are responsible for your own links. If the sharing service is made aware of such violations then they will remove the content. This practice is legally sound and will stand the test of any intellectual argument. The users agree to these terms for each file sharing service. But is is funny that only Filesonic and company are being challenged and not Amazon S3, Drobox, and Youtube. These sources also contain licensed content but Hollywood is looking the other way for now! Digital content exchange is here to stay. Shut down file sharing and bit torrent will come alive.

I am amazed at the greed of Hollywood and the record companies. Today licensed content is delivered through legal sources eliminating packaging, delivery trucks, and stocking physical shelves yet the prices are the same or even higher.

What I believe is happening now is the filesharing folks are talking to each other figuring out what country will be friendly to this business. A country like Columbia, South America, that will say even to the American government that the filesharing business is protected under our laws. Trust me, many third world countries are at this very moment considering the financing potential. American billionaires by the way have their separate list of offshore banks that are tax free.

As for developers like me here is the simple truth. When someone patches/uploads your product to the sky IT IS A COMPLEMENT. Sure it sucks losing s few pennies in profit but that is the nature of this competitive industry. Make some more apps or continue improve the apps you have created. If all this sounds crazy or wrong then go stock shelves at Walmart because the here it is; “you can not police the world”.

Final thoughts for the MPAA; the same applies. There are certain movies I insist on seeing on the big screen then there are others I wouldn’t even watch on your grandmothers VCR. Simple solution, make better movies.

To everyone on both sides of the argument my final thought; filesharing is here to stay. Get over it!

2 of the hosts I mentioned as good ones 4shared and x7.to have changed. X7.to has gone completely and 4shared has cancelled it’s affiliate program.

Update: Smaller host UploadBox calls it quits. “All files will be deleted on January 30th. Feel free to download the files you store with UploadBox until this date.”

Update2: Another host, x7.to, shuts down.

Update 3: TorrentFreak has seen evidence that on request PayPal is refunding cash paid to Filesonic over the weekend.

Update 4: FileJungle and UploadStation have disabled all 3rd party downloads.

Update 5: 4shared cancels affiilate program.

In the comments box I said that the company has stopped offering the service that was paid for. Just checked today and I’ve been given a full refund 24 hours after I put the claim in.

Currently giving zevera a go until this blows over. Seems pretty good, but I’m having trouble getting the oron links to work with jdownloader. Also, they seem to have a limit on oron traffic (It claims I hit the limit despite having loads of traffic for it left). works fine with all other hosters though.
