File-sharers forced to play fair

Researchers have found a way to enforce good manners on file-sharing networks by treating bandwidth as a currency. The team has created a peer-to-peer system called Tribler in which selfless sharers earn faster upload and download speeds but leechers are penalised. The technology is being assessed by a European broadcasting body looking at ways of piping TV across the net. Tribler has also been used to turn Sony’s PlayStation 3 into a video-sharing device.

Sounds just like a private bittorrent tracker, minus the tracker?

“Sounds just like a private bittorrent tracker, minus the tracker?”

Pretty much. A company taking a free software and finding a way to profit from it.

While Seeders will be rewarded, you have to wonder how the system works. Will you get an extra 10kb/s download for every 10mb you upload or (Knowing $ony) it’ll be you get an extra 10kb/s download speed for every 1Gb you upload.

I’ll stick to seeding to a 1:1 ratio, its all I can afford.

Taking bets on how many days it takes some innovative hacker to get round it ?
Not exactly fair on those with heavily biased connections though (say 8mbit down, 512k up)
    ho hum…

Looks like I am really gonna have to stick with rapidshare…no more leeching for me…. :P

I remember this existing back when Kazaa was relevant, and there being a version of the client that gave you the highest seeding rank anyway.

This is never going to work. Like post 2 says, people will find a way around it. Furthermore, if it gets commercial there will probably be a way to pay (with REAL, green currency) off your debts like a private tracker such as Demonoid uses. Demonoid offers the possibility to make a financial donation, in which case your ratio is magically set to 1. No matter how crappy your ratio was before.

Sounds like a lot of hot air again. People who just leech will leech no matter what. And so what? Even with them the system still works!

Even if it gets commercial use, we can always learn more about the tech. and do better free P2P programs! let them work, they have money! :p we stay here waiting…

Ps: enjoy world of warcraft – just pay for it…

  11. September 1st, 2007 | 04:27

I dont have any problem with this idea, it sounds great to me if this was implemented on the net with torrents.

My ISP damn well knows that i drain my 15mb/2mb down to its last unlimited drop every month :D Utorrent cranking it out at 200kbs anytime im not surfing or playing CSS (~20hrs/day) ;) Cant wait till fiber comes to my city i have 45mb/15mb pre-ordered.

I generally seed until 5.0 ratio, maybe 10.0 if its a good quality, popular scene release. Donating your bandwidth when your not using it is simple, and should be a commonsense no-brainer if you have unlimited down/up.

  12. September 1st, 2007 | 04:31

I’ll stick with revtt and TL along with utorrent, i have 1.5TB upload on each thanks to my seedbox… and i max out my 2.5mbps connection everytime :-)

They’re looking at using this to broadcast television? What the heck does p2p sharing ratios have to do with broadcasting television unless we’re talking about prerecorded shows people are downloading? If they’re using a p2p system as a means of transmitting data to people while spreading the load out, share ratios won’t matter.

Isn’t this exactly what every private tracker has been doing since the beginning of torrents?

Tribler is developed by a dutch university so you won’t have to pay for it. It’s quite a good program but not voor me i have 150 Kilobytes/s down and 20 up.

China has already had some P2P TV applications already, but there’s no ratio balance. Sometimes you’re 5 minutes behind when you watch a live program.
I think this idea is just an extension to the existing P2P file sharing system. They should make it work with bittorrent at least, so that private trackers like demonoid can makes out the most of it.
I prefer the 1.0 ratio, because most of clients have better download speed than upload speed.
If the P2P TV system is applied to real world, there can be personal TV channels just like YouTube, but in realtime, and they becomes torrent uploaders. Isn’t it simple?

  19. September 1st, 2007 | 10:30

even the best private tracker can be cheated by a small software of 136KB

I’m pro TV sharing this way, if it’s higher quality than current TV in the Netherlands. It has to be HD or at least 640×480 (or widescreen). The problem is indeed the upload download ratio that ISPs give in relation to this format of TV. The problem with this is in my view that popular television will be more sourced/shared and hence more watched, hence more stupidisation of the television. Stupid television without any valuable information is still the most popular.

The other problem is lagging with live television. Why don’t we all get HD-satelite :P It’s always on stream… connect it to a mediacenter… and put it on pause if you wish. Might be more expensive but draws a lot less power since the sharing mechanism forces you to leave your pc on longer than needed with the current poor upload speeds here. Wonderfully green idea TUDelft prof. NOT

Seeders were always rewarded. I had 2mb/2mb connection and when my internet provider found out I have more uploaded data than downloaded, he reduced my upload speed to 128kb :(

m00 m00 m00 tribler and torrents are poo!

There will always be a solution to crap like this for people with slow upload speed, it’s called UseNet! That’s why more and more people are switching to it :D

  25. Qred
    September 1st, 2007 | 11:47

I agree, this is BS, those without flatrate connection are screwed. I got 8dl-2ul connection so I cant really afford to leach anything without weeks of uploading.

It would be more fair if the system would use time as measurement, for example, for each 1mb you dl you gotta seed for atleast 1min to get 1:1 ratio regardless how much you actually managed to upload. So if you dl 700mb movie, you gotta seed for about 12hours.

So instead of banning those who cant maintain ratio you would ban those who actually deserve banning, those who throttle down their upload traffic.

  28. hegehog
    September 1st, 2007 | 12:41

    @Qred

    That won’t work…if you dl 700MB, then u gotta ul 700MB.

Otherwise, someone could use your method and just ul for 12 hours at 1kbs…after 12 hours, maybe they uploaded 10MB?? That sucks. Buy a T3 for your home if you have to!

“Researchers have found a way to enforce good manners on file-sharing networks”

lmao that’s the same daymn thing they said about torrents. Amd like torrents, as it is torrent technology, anyone with a little bit of knowledge with quickly learn how to intercept the softwares communications and, ermm, PAD their stats :)

Some private trackers, which are still open for the above mentioned method, have implemented a SANE ratio method. You have to seed to a 1-1 ratio OR seed continuously for 24 hours.

You will NEVER get this culture of leechers that torrents have created to play fair.

    September 1st, 2007 | 13:19

Yea, As a few ppl already have pointed out, this really sucks for us with ADSL. I have 20/4 or something. And its really hard to seed even though I want to. Dont we get punished enough by our sucky connections?

  31. September 1st, 2007 | 13:48

I Love leeching. I also love it when sites allow you to delete your account then you just create a new one with a new email address. A lot have got wise to it but some still dont get it….Im leeching like a bastard right now, I think my ratio is 0.004…..time for a new account and email addy….hurrah…

Hey, Im getting there ratios up, you need leeches at the end of the day, not everybody can get a good ratio….f**k em !

  32. Lynx
    September 1st, 2007 | 14:47

Hey leech I never thought of it that way, your so right we need leechers to keep seeders ratios up. MY GOD you are a genius, a real mind of our times, the great thinkers of the century. I wonder if that would work in all aspects of life. Leech are you unemployed and being payed by the government f**k em. when you walk past a starving person do you feed them, NO f**k em.

I for one will never ever contribute anything to society anymore because leech enlightened me, I have now been set free and I suggest everyone else does the same thing so nobody has anything. because f**k em! Thanks Leech

Im here to make you feel good about yourself. Im here to make the sad ratio kings happy ‘cos they have a bouncing smiling face next to their name…yeah whatever…

Warez is stealing, Im just not sharing stolen products, Im a real gent.

  34. September 1st, 2007 | 15:09

    Oh yeah and another thing…

Its aways made me laugh, when people start screaming stay with the rules. its about sharing, we have to care about the uploader…blah blah..

But none of us care about how much money any of these things we are sharing cost the company’s, so its all follow the system when we get it for free I take it, so how are you any better than a leech if you don’t want to pay for it ?

  35. costa200
    September 1st, 2007 | 15:42

If it can’t be leeched it will never become popular… Sadly enough people who don’t seed still contribute to the overall speed (unless they don’t upload at all with a leech client). Better to have 2 seeds and 20 leechers than having only 4 seeds.

I thought large companies like Sony wanted to LIMIT p2p? Now they want to promote it…?

Or.. this is just a way of killing the entire p2p scene by making it impossible to get enough quota to download anything of significant size, i.e. a CD and definitely not a DVD.

    Ah. Now it makes sense.

  37. September 1st, 2007 | 19:10

#23 The best way to avoid this is to get the business package at a cable company. Good cable companies will not throttle their business package customers, trust me i pay $80/mo for 15mb/2mb unlimited (~1500kbs/200kbs on torrent programs) and i have uploaded about 400GB every month for the last year :D LOL

As for you #31 “Leech” i dont understand the premise behind your selfishness. Most people are only on their computer for 1-12hrs/day why not set it to full upload when you are asleep or not using it? If you are not using something, it is the truly noble thing to let someone else gain benefit from it especially since you can take it back at any time. I understand that certain people have data transfer quotas, but if you have no quotas then why cant you max upload when you are sleeping?

This is a community and everybody has their place, there are people that leak, rip, release, post, seed, leech, etc. And you are right everyone has a place that has to be fulfilled, but the leech category should be reserved for people that actually have data transfer quotas put in place by their ISPs. Leech, when karma bites you in the ass you will know why.

  38. September 2nd, 2007 | 00:10

    Everyone post your ratios here!

Mine is 0.3 but no way am I going to dl at 3kb/s.

  39. Lord Shoa
    September 2nd, 2007 | 01:05

Some of us are still on a capped system and cannot change isp because there is no other to change to so this ratio thing is BS you share what you can with a speed you are capable of and thats it.

Not everyone has unlimited BB so sharing by ratio does not work.
Now I think anyone under a minimum of 10k should be banned as this is a reasonable amount if you are capped.

Go here http://www.funfile.org you only are required to maintain .4 ratio of what you download. You also get .2 gb for every hour that you seed, then you can trade this for download credit or for playing. You can donate:
$10 – VIP status for 1 month and an extra 10 GB Upload Credit
$15 – VIP status for 1 month and an extra 20 GB Upload Credit
$20 – VIP status for 2 months and an extra 30 GB Upload Credit
    $25 – VIP status for 2 months, 25 Credits & 40 GB Upload Credit
    $30 – VIP status for 3 months, 35 Credits & 50 GB Upload Credit
    $40 – VIP status for 3 months, 50 Credits & 60 GB Upload Credit
    $50 – VIP status for 3 months, 75 Credits & 70 GB Upload Credit
    $60 – VIP status for 3 months, 100 Credits & 80 GB Upload Credit
    $80 – VIP status for 6 months, 150 Credits & 100 GB Upload Credit
    $100 – VIP status for 6 months, 250 Credits & 200 GB Upload Credit
Is worth it when all you download always have seeders.

For everyone that thinks they can’t upload because of there upload speed is all BULLSHIT!!!!, and i couldn’t emphasis that anymore. I have had low upload speeds since I started uploading with a maxium upload speed of 12kbs and i still managed to stay a member of all private sites i joined uploading over 200gig and keeping a ratio well over 1.1 with that speed. The only reason you don’t upload is because you are selfish, and you think the world revolves around you. There is no work involved all you have to do is leave your computer on. OMG that might mean the end of the world for some people.

And as for saying that downloading is illegal, Jesus Christ, tell us something we don’t know and leech you are probably proud to be a low life leeching butt pipe but karma does catch us eventually mate and you will get yours.

Unlike you some people have bw limit per month so uploading counts towards there limit per month downloads.

  43. Lynx
    September 4th, 2007 | 05:06

Unlike me? I did, I had 25 gig a month including uploads, so I changed plans and my uploads don’t count (yet) but I alway seeded 1:1 there is no excuse, it is just being selfish.
