Fate of Hellas-RELOADED

Chaps from RELOADED released a fairly unknown real time strategy Fate of Hellas tonight and here’s a short info about this game. This title reminds me of Age of Mythology, which deals with the same time span - Ancient Greece. The release size is a nice surprise in these days, it has only 1.5 GB.

The RTS game Fate of Hellas combines economic development with tactical real time battles, all fully shown in 3D. In two campaigns with seven missions, each the player is able to take over control of the legendary people of Macedonia.

You will fight alongside Alexander The Great and bring peace to the city states of ancient Greece. Put together an army and fight with your soldiers for wealth and peace, becoming more successful than Alexander The Great has ever been. But beware: It will not be just your enemies that will envy you!

Game features:

  • Thrilling realtime battles in ancient Greece
„Fate of Hellas“ is an RTS game, which takes the player to ancient Greece: 2500 Years ago, before the rise of Rome, fierce battles between the Greeks and their enemies took place.
  • Build formations with your troops
3 different formations for strategic fights!
  • Equip your troops with weapons from your defeated enemies
Pick up the weapons left behind by your enemies after you have killed them in combat
  • Besiege the citys of historic Greece!
The more cities you conquer, the greater your power on the battlefield
  • More than 60 different characters!
Different fighters, buildings, vehicles and many more.

  • CPU Type: 2.4 GHz CPU

Ancient Wars: Sparta was an unfinished game.
This game looks the same and it uses the same engine (the same bugs) the previous one have.
Note: another game from this company is out and released by Reloaded: The Golden Horde.

    @17,
You skipped your history classes didn’t you? Well, as a history professor, I shall remedy this.

Let me write what I should at the end right away: Macedonia was never Greek, it was merely influenced by its culture as did the rest of the world by other superpowers like Egyptians, Romans, Ottomans, Spanish and Anglo-Saxons throughout history.

Macedonians were an ancient tribe that came from the North to the country before 3500 BC, in fact they are one of the world’s oldest documented tribes, right there with several other tribes such as Isrealites, Egyptians, Greeks, Chinese, Turks, Persians and Indians.

Greeks and Macedonians fought several wars, both reigned over the other for centuries and, again, they were not quite the same people.

Alexander III (the Great) was indeed a Macedonian, his father was King Philip conquered several of his neighbors and laid the groundwork to his son’s endless wars. Alexander reached the lands of India, crushing Persians, the only other superpower known to Greeks at the time, twice; yet succumbing to -according to the descriptions- either malaria or typhoid fever in ancient Babylon.

  21. treg
    March 29th, 2008 | 14:32

Macedonia was just another Greek state just like the rest of Greece at that point, and its language is proven to be a dialect of ancient Greece, not to mention the rest of their cultral similarities. Alexander the Great was taught by a Greek teacher ( why do that if Macedonia is a separate nation) and Olympus the center of the Ancient Greek religion was in fact in Macedonia. FYROM is nothing more than slavic branch that settled there during 7th century A.D.

    Professor…

    @20
a history professor my a$$. You ‘ve never studied Herodotus and you re a historian. LOL

Herodotus who is regarded as the “Father of History” in Western culture, presents the king of Macedonians Alexander I (ca. 495-450/440 B.C.), a dominant figure of Macedonian history during the 5th c. B.C., saying at the time of the Persian wars: I am myself a Greek of ancient stock, and I would not with my good will see Greece enslaved rather than free. (IX, 45,1-2)

THIS IS WRITTEN HISTORY FOLKS AND HISTORY IS SCIENCE SO ITS QUITE UNWISE NOT TO RESPECT IT.

  23. term
    March 29th, 2008 | 14:49

    Ancient greeks used to say.
“Ο ημιμαθής είναι χειρότερος του αμαθούς”
Meaning “one with shallow knowledge is worst than one without knowledge”
And your lesson mister “history professor” it’s only the half.

  24. cornellian
    March 29th, 2008 | 15:10

Well guys, I can’t make you believe me being a professor, yet I am; and you can see in which college in my nickname. Still I’d have preferred a little more respect.

    @21
Alexander was taught by a Greek tutor, because the Greek culture was the most influent culture of the day. Philip was tutored by and learned the intrinsic machinations of the culture of Greeks as well. The administration, scholarship and the martial disciplines of Greeks were at their prime; yet that does not mean that Alex and Philip were, just like other Macedonians, Greek. Babylon readily employed Egyptian scholars, or during Napoleonic era in nineteenth century, British and Austrian War Academies taught French approach to war, yet they were enemies.

    @22
I’ve possibly read more pages of Herodotus than you’ve read books alx, I very well know who he is. If you had done the same thing, you would have known that Macedonians embraced the Greek culture, quite likely the only instance when a superpower did not forcibly endorsed its own culture. Therefore living under a Macedonian ruler, yet with every single basic thing in life virtually unchanged was infinitely more preferable to living under the Persian ‘barbaric’ rule. Persian culture was somewhat paganistic, there are reliable reports that they actively engaged in human sacrifice, had absolutely no respect for women, there was unacceptable levels of violence in a civilized society and of course it didn’t have the smallest crumb of democracy.

Because I have studied Herodotus in ancient GREEK language, and in case hou HAVE VISION PROBLEMS: Alexander’s ancestor commited

What i don’t understand in all this is why our bulgarophone inhabitant neighbors don’t want to use the name their nation had before world war two which was VARDARSKA.In the meantime of WWII Josef Brostein (Tito if you prefer) who was their ruler, seized the opportunity to use the name MACEDONIA.The name VARDARSKA is well documented in maps of the region before 1940.

Also for all of our friends who dont speak Hellenic out there :

Philip comes from Philipos - Filos+Ippos meaning the friend of horses.
Alexander comes from Alexandros - Alexi + Andras meaning he who repels men.

By the way Alexander’s sister’s name is Thessaloniki deriving from Thessalon Niki meaning the victory of the Thessaleis, in honour of the victory of the Macedonians and the people of Thessaly against the tyrrant of Pherrae.

Lastly Alexander’s horse was named Bucefalas (meaning head of ox) and not Zastava.

As Slavic and Hellenic languages have little in common i find it impossible to find a derivation of the above names in the former language mentioned

Guys, guys.. I can’t reply to every one of you, after all this is Saturday and I have about 40 midterms to read and grade this weekend; so please, have some mercy! Do everyone a favor, and grab a history book preferably written by a Chinese historian -to have some level of objectivity.

However, to reply in general and hopefully conclude the matter; I can see that people of Greek descent take calling Macedonians and Alexander the III not Greeks as an insult. This is understandable; but unnecessary. Greek culture basically is the founding of Western Culture, and a culture that influent surely was accepted as the norm those days. The dominance of Anglo-Saxon culture today is nothing compared to ancient Greek dominance, and yet we have people in, say, Thailand naming their sons William! Macedonia spent a millenium under Greek rule, it is only natural to submerge into the rulers’ culture especially when nationalism wasn’t on high note as today. Thus, while greatly influenced by Greek culture, while living like their neighbors and old rulers, while being taught like Greeks; these people were quite simply, not Greeks.

My area of expertise is in Middle East history, so I can give a quick example from there. When Turkish tribes came to Middle East from Central Asia they were greatly influenced from Arabs and Persians. Centuries later, when Ottomans were ruling all Middle East(and much more in certain centuries) their culture was a mixture of Arabian, Greek, Persian and Turkish cultures. The Ottoman sultans often had their ‘primary’ wives (they had a harem you know) from foreign girls, but that didnot make the future sultans any less Ottoman. This is not surprising, nor should it be with the Macedonians. It is not like that they had strict borders and cultural wars in ancient times; the mightier simply ruled; but few tried to alter or destroy culture. The ones that did try to destroy cultures were the ones that were fought viciously against, like Persians. Others were most often regarded as a passage, not entirely pleasant, but not altogether revolting.

Let me stress that it is not impossible that Alexander were not of Greek descent, I never told this, nor would you find it anywhere. This is because of the unavoidable mixing I’ll mention in a short while and because history of ancient times is not entirely dependable. Herodotus himself is well known, in fact, to ‘alter’ certain things, as well as many other historians that followed him. As a rule of thumb, you need to take anything a historian relays regarding his own nation with a grain of salt.

With Macedonians and Greeks living under the umbrella of the same culture, there has to be mixing up between the nations. Here in America, we might as well no longer have the identity of ‘white caucasian’ Americans with everyone mixing up between races; yet in the end when you ask, almost all will tell that they are Americans. This has happened here in half a century, imagine a millenium under the rule of your neighbour. Thus, Alexander might have Greek descent, he might have Macedonian descent, he might have been Japanese (no, not really) but in the end, he was Macedonian.

That said, there is no need for aggresiveness or frustration (cyber, alx etc. I mean you boys). I am not trying to steal anything, I am not poisoning people’s minds; I am merely trying to state the ‘dependable facts’ as I have read and studied on. There are always inconsistencies in history with every nation shaping it to their gains, hence the ‘dependable facts’, but we try to make the best with what we have; and with that I wrote. It may be hard to accept, but that doesn’t diminish its value.

I will be happy to answer any questions, and will still try to explain if necessary but as I’m already behind my schedule for the weekend now, it may take some time.

I have no recollection of Alexander I saying anything like that, come Monday I will check it if that would please you. I find that hard to believe I admit, considering that two generations later his kingdom would face collapse from the attacks of the Greek Thebes. Even the fact that it comes from Herodotus, not really among the small group of dependable historians, makes me have some doubt..

Meanwhile, why don’t you tell me instead why one of the slightly more dependable historians, Thucydides (or Thucydidis) along with others, always called Macedonians ‘barbarians’, the word literally meaning non-Greek? Or did you not studied him as well?

The “dependable facts” our socalled “professor” havent found any time to deal with are the following:

    1. A migrating people dont go around Renaming existing toponymies in someone else’s language. They obviously rename them into their own. The original Ancient Macedonians renamed Phrygian toponymies into Greek. It would be quite absurb to rename toponymies into:

    (i) Not their own language
    (ii) A language they didnt…understand.

Even your examples “professor” prove my point. Neither Turks, nor Israelis, Persians, Chinese and the like went around renaming toponymies into…Greek. They used their own languages, so please return to reality.

    2. Hesiodus which is the earliest ancient account, places Macedonians through their eponym ancestor as Greek-speakers. Obviously if Macedonians were alien people, he wouldnt include them at all in the list among Greeks.

    3. Alexander and his ancestors identified themselves as Greek. This Argead Greek lineage went unquestioned by ancient Greek and Roman writers. Therefore anything else is entirely pointless.

    4. The surviving literary and archaeological evidence during Classical and Hellenistic Ages shows clearly that Macedonians considered themselves to be Greek, carriers to spread the Greek language and civilization to Asia while revenging Persians for their “crimes against Macedonia and the rest of Greece”.

    5. I believe there is no need to go on further by stating the obvious. All archaeological discoveries point out explicitely that ancient Macedonians were Greek themselves, speaking a North-West Dialect of Greek. In fact the only archaeological finding, identified as ancient Macedonian language was proved by eminent linguists to be a Greek dialect. (Pella Katadesmos)

As a bottom line, its annoying watching a bunch of revisionists trying to link totally unrelated Slavic people with ancient Greeks. All you will ever manage to do is more hating, bloodshell, wars etc. The balkan peninsula has been a theatre to countless wars and disputes. There is no need to add more fuel.

Well, noone is disputing that Alexander the Great was Greek, every historian and scientists knows that.

    See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexander_the_great

“Alexander the Great (Greek: Αλέξανδρος ο Μέγας or Μέγας Aλέξανδρος,[1][2] Megas Alexandros; July 20 356 BC – June 10 323 BC),[3][4][5] also known as Alexander III, was an ancient Greek[6][7][8] king (basileus) of Macedon (336–323 BC). He was one of the most successful military commanders in history, and was undefeated in battle. By the time of his death, he had conquered most of the world known to the ancient Greeks.”

    And http://encarta.msn.com/encyclopedia_761564408/Alexander_the_Great.html

“To bind his conquests together, Alexander founded a number of cities, most of them named Alexandria, along his line of march; these cities were well located, well paved, and provided with good water supplies. Greek veterans from his army settled in them; young men, traders, merchants, and scholars were attracted to them; Greek culture was introduced; and the Greek language became widely known. Thus, Alexander vastly extended the influence of Greek civilization and prepared the way for the kingdoms of the Hellenistic period and the conquests of the Roman Empire.”

Calm down, next we’d start arguing if the earth is “round” or not.
And no Athenians called Spartian barbarians, btw. As not called Makedonians that, where are the sources for such?

Maybe I should have left people in their own ignorance. I am spending precious time doing for free what I do for a living!

Legak, people that migrated into a new territory often change its name, but when they are also migrating their culture as well. You have to stop thinking in today’s terms, with ‘what would happen if’. That was then, that is how it happened. Besides, my college is in Ithaca named after, well Ithaca, in Greek, yet there are so many Indian named towns, rivers etc. around, were the pioneers too lazy to change their names as well, or are you suggesting that pioneers were very proficient in Indian languages or in Greek?

You need to read more carefully, Macedonians have spent a millenium under Greek rule. Being accepted as ‘Greek’ was something back then, no disrespect whatsoever meant. Of course they would learn Greek, they had to, it was civilization compared to their state. They called themselves Greek when they had the power to do so, it is little different for an El Salvadorian calling himself American -again no disrespect-. Therefore in terms of culture similarities are bound to be there. Earliest of historians were more than several centuries late for the timeframe of Macedonian settling of the area, so their information is hardly valuable in this perspective. In short; annoying or not, you can’t claim people for your own when you rule them for a long time; even when you practically assimilated them.

By the way citing Romans as not questioning Greek documents is like telling Blair never questioned Bush, so Bush must be right!

Oh, and nickgio, I understand your concern and thank you for being more reasonable than many. The city-nations that formed Greece was what I called Greece by the way not to complicate things even further..

Anyway, this has gone far too long. I can’t delay those papers, so until I have finished them all, you’ll have to excuse me. Still, it was somewhat enjoyable to see that people interested in history..

Macedonians or any other migrating people simply will rename an existing toponymy in their OWN language. No people in classical ages while migrating were renaming existing toponymies in the language of someone else’s and even more funnily in a language they were supposed NOT TO UNDERSTAND anyway.

How many people have taken the scenarios and worked out the reasons behind them and the possibilities each one has?We all have to be very alert. The balcan region has an unbelievable geostratigical importance and any event that causes instability can be considered to be a great chance for slipping in as a friend/ally/whatever.

The only way we can truly be considered as descendents of our great ancestors is not by eulogizing them but by actively following and pushing forward our culture and education. So we should always train our mind and try to become better people.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ancient_Macedonians

“The Ancient Macedonians (Greek: Μακεδόνες, Makedónes) were an ancient tribe who inhabited the alluvial plain around the rivers Haliacmon and lower Axius, north of the mountain Olympus in Greece.[1] Historians generally agree that the ancient Macedonians, whether they originally spoke a Greek dialect or a distinct language, came to belong to the Koine Greek speaking population in Hellenistic times. Whether the ancient Macedonians were an ethnically Greek people themselves continues to be debated by historians, linguists, and lay people. However, the Macedonian Royal family known as the Argead dynasty claimed Greek descent. Macedonians were originally allowed to the Olympic Games, an athletic event that people only of Greek origin participated[2][3]. After the 4th century BC, the ancient Macedonians were heavily Atticised.”

    @71

We greeks don’t care about FYROM. We don’t want neither its mountains nor its rivers. We only care about our history.
And all these outrageous lies, even as ridiculous as they seem to any person who knows the basics of history, hell even no history at all (for god’s sake, all the NAMES ARE GREEK) are an insult.

It is true that Macedonia waged war against other greek cities. But that shouldn’t sound weird to you professor, as Sparta waged war against Athens too. And I hope there is no one here stupid enough to claim that Sparta or Athens were not greek cities. No democracy could survive in the ancient days in a vast empire. That’s why Athens was only a city

Asides the rest, is there really anyone that disagrees that FYROM is a slavic country, that wasn’t even at the region at the time of Alexander the Great. Just this should be enough to render the profesor’s side pointless

Sorry cornellian, but where were those “Macedonians” even 100-200 years ago? They just woke up and discovered their ethnic identity?

If, according to what you say in #64, the ancient Macedonians were obliged to learn greek, then why did their names (Archelaus, Alexandros, Philippos, Amyntas and Themida), as well as the names of i.e. members of the council (hegemones, somatophylaces, philoi etc) were of Greek origin?

Maybe because it’s (possibly) a matter of different Greek dialects and not different languages?

Why did the royalties claimed (at that time) Greek descent? Why were they even allowed at the olympic games if they weren’t Greek?

Maybe because they were in fact Greeks?

I understand that there’s a great debate on when exactly it happened, but one thing is certain, after the 5th or 4th century BC they were considered part of Greece.

As for the Yugoslavic points of view, I’ll just quote post #27.

who cares about all that crap debate, it’s HISTORY, always to sides to the story, and you get nowhere because you can’t PROVE it. Just by reading tons of stories from different sources doesnt make one know the truth.

anyways, this reminds me: are tawainese, chinese? it’s the same concept…

    ALEXANDER WAS CHINESE; wOOT!

From your attitude I reckon you didn’t like history in school :)… I’m sure you wouldn’t wanna live in a world where everyone speaks the same language, has the same traditions, thinks in the same way, eats the same food, makes the same music etc etc. Because history is in a way the carrier of all this. That would be very boring.

And by the way, saying that Alexander the Great was chinese is equally funny as saying that he was slavic

No its not. Its so clear.. Ancient Macedonians themselves admitted that they were GREEKS. Written in the very first academic history book of humanity. Almost 5th century B.C.

So its quite clear, its not debatable.

That ’s why people should read history. Just to solve these dilemas.

    Not to greeks or slabs…”

    Macedonia is an idea…

    -Macedonia was Greek
-Macedonia doesn’t exist as a state anymore
-Macedonia is Greek history and will never exist again
-Some of lands Macedonia consisted of are now FYROM and WILL REMAIN FYROM as they are.
-History shouldn’t remind us of which regions we had but WHAT WE WERE
-FYROM should choose a name that reflects it’s REAL history and culture

    Frank, I totally agree…

    troll,

What the f is this macedonierr that came out of your mind?
Macedonia, comes from greek work Makednos, referred by Homer Himself.
When greek used sewers, german Brits, used to climb trees like monkeys and lived in caves like animals. Thats a good reason for someone to want to be greek.

The people who dont know their past and history are going to do the same mistakes again and again.
    Alexander was Macedonian!
    Herodotus was athenian!
    Leonidas was Spartan!
In ancient greece every city was a seperate state.thats why they have so many wars.all these seperate cities were speaking and writing greek and all together they have something in common.they called themselves greeks.any other tribe would be called barberian.
ALexander was indeed macedonian who writen ,spoke and given greek names to all the cities he conquer.that is why he was GREEK.
Any other self claimed professor should study more history
and WONDER WHY all the names alexander gave to the cities were greek and not SLAVS.
The name VARDASKA was the name they had in this small area called FYROM now.
THEY SHOULD STAY WITH THAT NAME and not try to steal a name that does not belong to them. They are SLAVS not MACEDONIANS.
The AREA where ancient greek macedonia city was before 2500 years, NOW belongs to GREECE, TO VARDASKA AND BULGARIA.
THEY have no right to use the name.If other professors have
any doubt go to a museum in vergina in greece where the grave of filipos-the father of alexandros was found and take a look at the font.
Your language is slavish and is not the language the macedonian were speaking.
