Q1: What’s this web site all about?
A: Release Log, more commonly known as rlslog, is a wordpress (and proudly so) powered web site that covers the freshest and greatest releases from ‘The Scene’. It was founded in January 2006 as one of the first (if not the first) web site dedicated to covering Scene releases in more detail than say just the NFO or just the torrent. Updated multiple times a day, rlslog posts articles on popular scene categories such as XviD (Movies), TV-Rip (TV Shows), ODAY (Mainly Applications), MP3 (Music) and PC Games (Games) . We also regularly post tech news, relevant to the P2P/Internet rights, hardware/software community. Posts which relate about news and the goings-on of our web site will go into the Site News category.
The main aim for us is to write about new releases as fast as we possibly can, while being brief and to the point. We collect all of the most important information needed for each release such as snapshots, samples, NFOs and technical specifications laid out in a professional layout so you don’t have to go multiple web sites to get the information you need. Almost every post includes a review or opinion by the editor (first paragraph), screen cap’s for the release, and plot outline. Towards the end of each post you will find important links, and also an option to download the torrent file* discussed in the article. You can find more general info about rlslog at our About page.
A: rlslog is run by a small but dedicated group of individuals from around the world, all in their free time and FOR FREE. The actual number of staff fluctuates from time to time as new staff are added and old staff leave but usually there are about 10 active and around 5 inactive staff. It takes a lot work to keep rlslog maintained and up to date for you so leave an editor a nice comment just to show you appreciate their work.
Q3: How does rlslog obtain scene releases?
A: It totally depends on the individual editor. Some editors have access to topsites, some have access to private trackers, some use UseNet, others use IRC and some have a mix of different sources. All staff have access to pre channels which allows us to post a release as fast as possible. The majority of our editors come from a BitTorrent background, but their are few that use the above sources including topsites. We of course only use these sources to check releases and not to download them…
Q4: Can i get in trouble with the authority’s for visiting rlslog?
A: rlslog is a purely informative site, we do not host any illegal content. rlslog does not host the .torrent files or the sample links that can be found in our posts. Nor do we upload these ourselves.
Even if some Copyright lobbies think that downloading .torrent file constitutes copyright infringement we know better, the .torrent files you can download from the links on rlslog are nothing more than metadata and checksums. The data that you receive from downloading a .torrent file is found in the individuals computer and not on the rlslog or newtorrents servers. The sample links especially the video samples most likely fall under Fair Use as they are all under a minute and again we just link to the samples we do not host or upload them. Not a single byte of copyrighted data is stored on the rlslog or newtorrents servers. Furthermore the .torrent files we link to are hosted on a different site (NTi). On top of that NTi is not even a tracker so it does not help in anyway to downloading material beyond a .torrent file. So to that end there is no conceivable way that you can get in trouble for visiting rlslog. You wouldn’t close down a news channel because they informed on murders, robbery’s etc would you?
Q5: When I connect to rlslog i get a ‘could not connect to database’ or similar error (505).
A: An error message like this means that our server is overloaded and cannot handle anymore requests. This happens at peak hours as the number of visitors increases. Wait a few minutes and try again. We will be upgrading our server soon to try and eliminate these problems. Recently we deactivated the star rating system and this has helped a lot in keeping server load down. These error messages should be minimal now. However due to the popularity of the site we are finding it hard to keep up with the increasing number of visitors and thus error messages like this cannot be avoided completely.
Q6: Why are there so many advertisements on rlslog?
A: Any webmaster will tell you that advertisements are necessary to keep any site online and free. All of the money generated from the advertisements are put to towards server costs which are very expensive! We try to keep ads that promote rogue software off of rlslog but this is hard to do as we do not personally choose which ads are to run and which are to not. If you find a particular advertisement to be promoting the use of rogue software email us and we will look into it. We also wont run any XXX ads.
Q7: Why is there so many spelling errors on this site?
A: Spelling is not at the top of our list when putting together a post. English is not most of our editor’s mother tongue, although we try to keep it professional by using spell-checkers. Constantly leaving comments that regard the minutest spelling or grammatical mistakes is not just only annoying and a waste of time, but is also very insulting as we are doing this in our free time at no cost to you. Unless there is a massive mistake all of these comments will be deleted as spam. Even if English is that editor’s native language, they are going to make mistakes from time to time even with a spell checker. As long as its coherent and readable then its fine by us. Usually if one editor finds a spelling /grammatical error in his post or an other editor’s post, he will try to correct it in a timely matter.
Q8: Why is the site being updated slowly at the moment?
A. We usually aim to post a new release as fast as possible. However there are going to be times when no one is going to be available to put a post together at that exact time. We try to keep these gaps to a minimum but they cannot be eradicated completely. All of our editors are human beings with their own personal lives and jobs. These factors remain first on their priority list, and so if a popular release is not posted in a timely manner, that is the reason behind it. Particular times of the year (such as Christmas) will also factor into the posting activity on the site.
Q9: A rlslog staff member said a particular release was great/rubbish and it isn’t..
A. Editor’s comments on whether a movie/game/app etc is good or not is simply their opinion on it. It is not meant as a serious review, if you want a serious review use the links to the review sites that are included in the post. Calling an editor and idiot or a moron or whatever because you think a particular movie/game/app etc is great and they didn’t is uncalled for and that comment will be deleted along with the comment poster being banned if they do it multiple times. We are not saying that you cannot disagree with what an editor has said but please do so in a polite and logical way. If you strongly feel that an editor has written something really outrages then email us and we will evaluate the article in question.
Q10: A rlslog staff member wrote a comment that is against the rules.
A. First of all make sure that this comment actually came from a rlslog editor. If the comment doesn’t have 
next to it then its most likely someone trying to impersonate a staff member. Make sure the comment uses this image and doesn’t just say staff in text. If it is a real editors comments then email us and we will evaluate the comment as well as further action being taken if necessary.
Q11: Why are so many of the torrent links on rlslog not linking to a .torrent file?*
A. This is a news web site ONLY. We don’t host any of the torrents. Nor do we upload the torrents. The torrent link that is used in our articles is usually just a search of NTi. It does not take to much more effort to copy and paste the release name into your favorite BitTorrent tracker/indexer/searcher etc now does it? If the post says something along the lines of ‘coming soon’ or something similar it means that NTi hasn’t been updated with that particular torrent because we are to fast. 
Usually users will post extra links to the particular product in question in the comments section.
Q12: Why do rlslog staff members always link to torrents on NewTorrents.info?
A. NewTorrents.info (NTi) is a torrent indexing site and was founded by the same people who now make up the bulk the of the staff on rlslog. For that reason rlslog usually only links to torrents on NTi. An exception to posting only NTi torrents will occur sometimes, but it is up to the discretion of the editor and is usually done so with a good reason.
Q13: What are the rules for posting comments?
A. Comments are a tricky business; some users want us to delete the offensive/off topic/racist etc comments which is understandable, but others, however, don’t want us to delete these comments as they consider it a form of censorship. After careful deliberation, we have decided that even though we consider censorship to be bad thing, there are always going to be people who will abuse the comment system. So to that end we will try to remove any and all comments that do not follow our very simple rules:
No racism, homophobia or similarly abusive behavior. No spamming. No useless Off topic posts (including 1st posts).
Easy right? Just follow these three simple rules and everything will be fine. If a poster goes against these rules the comment will be deleted as well as in extreme cases the commenter banned. The staff’s decision on comment related acts are final, don’t email us whining about how you were treated unfairly and above all don’t post another comment saying ‘why did you delete my comment?!’ or something, this will earn you a swift ban. You can however mail us if you feel we have missed a comment that needs to be deleted. Email us and we will evaluate the comment in question.
Q14: Does rlslog release any sort of warez? (e.g. releases tagged -RLSLOG or torrents with a link to rlslog in the description)
A. Absolutely not, rlslog.net (which includes all staff members and administrators) does not release any kind material. If you find a torrent or release that is tagged as rlslog or links to rlslog then this is done by a third party and not done by anyone who is affiliated with rlslog.net. PERIOD. We do not wish for our name to be used in release names but this is out of our control.
Update: We have a notable exception to the above: VA_-_RLSLOG-2nd-Anniversary-in-Memory-of-Scit-2CD-2008-RLSLOG. THE ABOVE STILL APPLYS.
Q15: Where do rlslog staff members get their nuke and dupe information from?
A. Pre Channels.
Q16: Can you invite me to one of your pre channels then?
A. Yea sure, click here for the info… But seriously pre channels are private and they are private for a reason. You need to have the right connections to be invited to one. Don’t ask us to invite you to one because the answer will always be no. Simply because we don’t know who you are and is not because it makes use feel high and mighty or whatever.
Q17: Does rlslog have an IRC channel?
A. rlslog DOES have a public IRC channel. Click here for the info. The staff also have a private IRC channel where we combine our resources to bring you faster posts. This channel is private, passworded and encrypted so please do not try to find or join it as it will be a waste of time.

Yes we do! Located at RLSTalk.net.
Q19: Can I become a staff member?
A. We are happily filled with many hardworking staff and don’t require anymore staff members at this point.
