Fake Homer Simpson email spreading malware

A screen name once connected to animated TV dad Homer Simpson is being used to spread malware. In a 2003 episode of The Simpsons, writers revealed that Homer’s e-mail address was chunkylover53@aol.com. Prior to the episode’s airing, the address was registered by one of the show’s writers, who used it to answer hundreds of e-mails from Simpsons fans. Years later, the chunkylover53 screen name has resurfaced, and it’s now being used to distribute a trojan disguised as a Simpsons movie file.

According to FaceTime malware research director Chris Boyd, chunkylover53 is sending out auto-reply messages to users which promises a special exclusive episode of the show available for download. The link in the message leads to an executable file. Upon launching the trojan, the user is presented with a fake error message which is followed by several real error messages and, finally, a blank screen. Upon restarting, the system will run noticeable slower and be prone to crashes. Boyd found that the malicious payload delivered by the trojan includes a rootkit and remote control software which logs the user in a botnet. The malware was traced back to Kimya, a Turkish botnet which has been infecting machines for the last four months.

Serves people right for 1 being stupid enough to open an email from someone they don’t know. and 2 for being even dumber to believe that there is an episode of the Simpsons that cant be found online already from file sharers or even youtube for something like this.

I kinda laughed at this because how can people be so stupid opening emails from A CARTOON CHARACTER for peat sake. That would be the first thing that give it away. And if the person hasn’t noticed by now that an .exe file isn’t a video, they shouldn’t own a computer.

It’s got nothing to do with being stupid, it’s got everything to do with being conned. We’ve all at some point been tricked into doing something, because we trusted it was on the level. It’s difficult to be on your guard all of the time, & lets face it, there are so many ratbags out there who get their kicks from screwing up other people’s computers.

They’re the losers, not the poor victim that fell prey to the prank.

While I agree that you should scan everything no matter who it is from, I must say that this is the most self congrating group of idiots I have ever seen except for a very few.

You people had better wise up and think, you are not so superior in any form. How many times did you get hit with a virus or malware in the past and if you say never you are a damned liar.

There are viruses for EVERY OS out there no matter what you are running and they are growing by the day for ALL OS’s (and yes that includes Mac and Linux and Unix as well) As well as a few that are deep inside the program that are not activated until you install the program so even the best AV will not find it.

So you can crow about how good your computer skills are all you want, but everyone knows the only completely safe computer from viruses and malware is one that is NOT connected to the net and only uses store bought software and games.

So get off your soap boxes and stop feeling so smug, there are people out there right now that are writing viruses and such that could hack you in a NY Second no matter what firewall you are using.
It is not a question of IF you are going to get hit, but when and if you are bragging that you cannot be hit, then that paints a big bullseye on your back as the virus writers will take that as a red flag and come after you intentionally just to prove a point. So the actual n00bs are not the ones that fall for a trick, but the ones that claim they know better and STILL get hit like most of the braggers here.
