Facebook unveils friends chat service

Facebook officially unveiled their much hyped chat service today. The social networking giant flicked the switch on the service which allows users of Facebook to message their friends quickly and efficiently from any page in Facebook. After a user agrees to go online they are greeted with their friends list in a pop up form on within an integrated version at the bottom of Facebook pages. Interestingly the connection doesn’t appear to be SSL so it might be possible for bad guys to sniff any conversations with your friends.

Facebook is in the middle of a re-design aimed to promote aggregation for users personally. In a message to Facebook users the company says “As you have seen in our screen shots, the ‘Wall’ tab of your profile has a new emphasis on recent activity. We think this is the information that your friends care the most about, and the information that will recap what you have been up to lately. This change shouldn’t make you feel uncomfortable, and to ensure this we will be giving you control over what information is displayed about you. What’s really important is that you have a say in what information is being shared about you, and in turn, your friends have an easy way to see it.” It’s not clear how big corporations and businesses will deal with the new chat service as it’s so well integrated it may not be an easy task to block without blocking the whole of Facebook.

Facebook is one of the worst online tracking systems in the world.

Some people put all their personal details and those of their freinds family workplaces schools hobbies muisc and film tastes holidays and interests for all to see.

    Its stupid and dangerous.

With this one of the firsst things mentions is that the odd clever person can snoop on your conversations.
You hvae to be a complete dumbass to trust facebook and enter all your details incluidng credit cards etc.

This is just the kind of thing the goverment wants. Its insidious and promoted and sharing with your freinds - its just a comventent way for Big Brother to find out anything it wants to know about what you are doing…Just try to delete you account to see how tricky it is to escape it.

Opera Browser? With less than a 1% market share, nobody will care about your problems. Congrats on beating out netscape and mozilla though.

Today? The feature has been active ever since this weekend. Nothing new really. However, I agree it’s a nifty feature. Very helpful for people who do not want to run 5 different IM in order to keep up with their friends.

is it just me or is that what MSN is for. If you have a facebook you most likely have some form of instant messenger. I will never use this feature of facebook.

I logged in and set myself as online on the facebook chat, and within 10 minutes, I had 4 messages from people I don’t really want to talk to. Unfortunately, if I want to use it as the new “drunk dial” or for those booty calls, it is the price I’ll pay.

    Here’s a cool trick:
Add Facebook Chat to your Firefox sidebar

1.) In the Bookmarks menu, select Organize Bookmarks…
2.) Click on the New Bookmark…
3.) In the Name Field enter “Facebook Chat”. Enter http://www.facebook.com/presence/popout.php for the location and check the Load this bookmark in the sidebar checkbox.

Now you can have Facebook chat in your firefox sidebar.
