Exploding Motorola cellphone killed man in China

Not only laptops, but now also cellphones can transform into dangerous explosive toys. A 22-year-old welder in China was killed after his Motorola cell phone exploded in the man’s chest pocket. Motorola officials are working with Chinese authorities to figure out what caused the explosion. The phone reportedly was exposed to high temperatures before it blew up. Xiao Jinpeng, a welder at the Yingpan Iron Ore Dressing Plant in Jinta county in western China’s Gansu province, was killed on June 19 when the battery in his cell phone exploded, according to an Associated Press report from Xinhua, China’s state news agency. The Motorola cell phone was in Xiao’s chest pocket, and had reportedly been exposed to high temperatures before it exploded, Xinhua said. Rib fragments pierced Xiao’s heart following the explosion. After emergency treatment failed, Xiao reportedly died at a local hospital.

While there have been several reports of injuries in the past, this appears to be the first fatality resulting from a cell phone battery explosion. It has not yet been determined whether the battery was an original Motorola battery or not, according to reports. “Motorola’s priority is, and always has been, the safety of our customers, and all Motorola products are designed, manufactured and tested to meet or exceed international and local standards for consumer safety and performance,” Motorola spokesperson Jennifer Erickson told TechNewsWorld.”At this time, preliminary evidence suggests that it is highly unlikely that a cell phone caused this accident; however, we are cooperating with the Chinese authorities to determine and investigate the root cause,” Erickson added. “Of course, our thoughts and prayers are with the individual’s family and friends,” she said.

If i was the closet family member to that guy, i would sue for millions and millions and millions, you might not get it all, but they will settle out for a large amount.

Motorola will NOT be liable for one cent. Lawyers will easily claim and prove stupidity on the part of the Chinese worker.
    Ignorance is no excuse!

    @ swordfish

You obiously don’t comprehend lawsuits. These phones are sold under the knowledge that people will place these in their pockets and on rare ocassions the phone may be under high temperatures. Now, if the phone stops working because of the heat, than that is one thing, but if it EX-FUCKING-PLODES all of the fucking place, than that is a lawsuit!

If you sell things that you know people will put in their pockets, make fucking sure i can’t explode.

2 things that I have to point out/bring attention to…

1). Cheap a$$ phones will kill you [actual phone was similar to Nokia 'throwaway' phone sold in gas stations].
2). If you’re a ‘WELDER’ then you may want to take heed and keep objects that include warnings against ‘high temperature exposure’ AWAY FROM HIGH HEAT. Yurg?!

Lawsuit? This happened in China. Noone will be forced to pay you a single dime if you spill hot coffee over yourself. Same with the cellphone. Batteries always have and will explode when exposed to extremely high temperatures. That’s just common sense. Too bad for the guy though.

im sure there will be a settlement, petty cash for such a huge corporation, and it sure beats the possibility of creating the next huge internet fad “motorola killed my son” campaign exploding all over the place

    July 6th, 2007 | 06:31

@19: Well what’s wrong with having a lighter full of gas in your pocket? It’s very unlikely, but it happened to me that it exploded when I sat down on it with my skinny ass. Should I sue the lighter manufacturing company because of my own stupidity?

    lawsuit??
    this is china…

This welder, who works in an iron smeltering plant (i guess it can be REALLY hot in there) probably makes 1$ a day. his family got over 17k$ in compensation, that is HUGE MONEY in china.

    millions upon millions. hahahah.
Americans really should understand that most of the world is nothing like the US.

hell, after the Tianenman square massacre, the deceased’s families were billed for the bullets used to kill their loved once.

    July 6th, 2007 | 13:13

LOL !!!! i imagine a hot rock from the weld was smoldering away in his pocket with his phone and he didnt notice till it was too late ..that will teach him for being a messy welder

  31. July 6th, 2007 | 13:33

With your phone in your jeans’ pocket, you would lose a limb and your genitals. Stupid mobile phones…

This was a terrorist action lead by Apple to sell more iPhones, because Motorola is #1 in the US. Hehehe.

The other day I was welding with my Moto in my front pocket. I feel sick now. That’s the 2nd weird coincedence this week. Yesterday, I saw the movie Requiem for A Dream, and in one scene the main junkie is wearing the exact same shirt as I was during the movie. I’m scared.
