    The finished product is very pixelated.

    Stick with ConvertXtodvd or WinAVI.

    ConvertXtoDVD is good but is slow in converting. Is there another program that converts files to dvd faster?

    Use Nero to burn your avi files as data to a dvd and it should play on your divx standalone dvd player.

    @ Maria
    Guardian Knot (this is freeware I think) will convert vob files to avi, then you can burn to dvd as data. Beware it can take hours for each movie though.

    For anyone who’s still interested;

    I decided to give this program a try since I still use Windows 98 and I haven’t found much else that really works.

    The good news is that it seemed to work fine. The bad news is that it is VERY limited. There are no options at all beyond choosing the work directory. You can’t even tell it to limit the size to a 4.5GB DVD. I converted a 2 hour movie and the finished size was 5GB. Since dual layer blanks are much more expensive than single layer ones, this will be a problem for many people. I don’t have any myself, so I could only view the finshed files from the HD.

    Other problems; Because of the above, I underestimated the HD space required. It first converts the AVI files to VOB files, then to a Video_TS folder. When it ran out of space, I was left with two VOB files (2 CD movie) which were perfectly converted. I cleared some more space, re-ran the program and tried to add the VOB files, figuring it wouldn’t need to re-convert them. It refused to open them. I had to delete them and start over from scratch. When I realized I was running out of space, I tried to abort the conversion, it asked me if I was sure, but when I clicked Yes, it just popped up again and again.

    Perhaps if I had told it to convert and burn in one step, it might have been smart enough to see the target size and limit the output, but I doubt it. I didn’t try that because I didn’t want to spend a couple hours converting it only to have the burn fail for whatever reason.

    On the bright side, the conversion time was slightly less than the running time of the movie and it looked pretty good. It probably wouldn’t please someone who wants the highest quality conversion possible, but for being a one-click conversion program, the end result looked pretty good to me.
