Eastern Promises R5 LiNE XviD-COCAIN

A fairly new and active group COCAIN strikes back with another sweet release: R5 rip of Eastern Promises, a totally amazing thriller directed by David Cronenberg with a really high 8.0 rating at IMDB. This movie was available only in cam so far, so this is a huge step forward in terms of quality. I highly recommend you this title!

The new thriller reteaming acclaimed director David Cronenberg with his A History of Violence leading man Viggo Mortensen, Eastern Promises is written by Steve Knight (Academy Award-nominated screenwriter of Dirty Pretty Things). As in the earlier film, director and star together explore the psyche, physicality, and fortunes of a man whose true nature may never be wholly revealed. The mysterious and charismatic Russian-born Nikolai Luzhin (Mr. Mortensen) is a driver for one of London’s most notorious organized crime families of Eastern European origin. The family itself is part of the Vory V Zakone criminal brotherhood. Headed by Semyon (Academy Award nominee Armin Mueller-Stahl), whose courtly charm as the welcoming proprietor of the plush Trans-Siberian restaurant impeccably masks a cold and brutal core, the family’s fortunes are tested by Semyon’s volatile son and enforcer, Kirill (Vincent Cassel), who is more tightly bound to Nikolai than to his own father.

But Nikolai’s carefully maintained existence is jarred once he crosses paths at Christmastime with Anna Khitrova (Academy Award nominee Naomi Watts), a midwife at a North London hospital. Anna is deeply affected by the desperate situation of a young teenager who dies while giving birth to a baby. Anna resolves to try to trace the baby’s lineage and relatives. The girl’s personal diary also survives her; it is written in Russian, and Anna seeks answers in it. Anna’s mother Helen (Sinéad Cusack) does not discourage her, but Anna’s irascible Russian-born uncle Stepan (Jerzy Skolimowski) urges caution. He is right to do so; by delving into the diary, Anna has accidentally unleashed the full fury of the Vory. With Semyon and Kirill closing ranks and Anna pressing her inquiries, Nikolai unexpectedly finds his loyalties divided. The family tightens its grip on him; who can, or should, he trust? Several lives – including his own – hang in the balance as a harrowing chain of murder, deceit, and retribution reverberates through the darkest corners of both the family and London itself.

This movie doesn’t even have subtitles for the Russian dialogs. Read the first paragraph of this review to see why: http://www.jackiekcooper.com/MovieReviews/EasternPromises.htm

From what I read in that review, the writer is complaining because the movie was done in English, and he was mad that there was so much Russian in the movie that REQUIRED THE VIEWER TO READ THE SUBTITLES.

“why does a film intended for an English speaking audience have so much Russian in the dialogue which then requires the audience to read subtitles?”

Another quote from your same review that totally DOESN’T support your theory of not requiring subs for this movie.

“And when David Cronenberg, the director, is moving the plot along it usually involves some conversations in Russian. And that means subtitles.”

    Did you read that review?

    @ Stag420

    Did you read this part?

“If I was going to see a foreign film I would expect subtitles but in this movie – no.”

This best way to settle this is to email him and ask him if there were subtitles.

I read the article dude, and it clearly states that he didnt expect to see subs in this movie, implying that there were subs…

@PARKIE25 Thank you for confirming this, I dont feel like arguing.

That review clearly implies there were too many Russian speaking parts that required the reading of subtitles for the reviewers liking.

Personally, I think that’s a ridiculous reason to criticize a movie, but you misread it.

One of those movies that seems profound because of the style and mood, thus mostly positive reviews, but stop and think about it for a moment and the plot line doesn’t make much sense

I was able to dig the flick without subtitles. Sure, it can be pretty off-putting when they talk Russian, but I felt it gave it an extra layer of really weird, foregin vibe, and it doesn’t ruin the movie anyway.

Besides, it gives you an excuse to check it out again when the proper North American DVD release hits on Dec. 28th, 2007.

Amazing flick, even if some of it is lost in translation.
