E3: Sony cuts PS3 price by $100
At the E3 Media & Business Summit, Sony announced it was introducing a new PlayStation 3 model with a built-in 80 GBhard drive for $399, replacing Sony’s current 80GB PS3 which retails at $499. The new 80GB model essentially doubles the storage capacity of Sony’s currently offered 40GB PS3 model, which is also priced at $399. The new 80GB PS3 will start shipping in September, according to a statement on Sony’s Web site. The new 80GB PS3 will also include integrated Wi-Fi and a built-in Blu-ray player, but like the old 40 GB model it will not be backwards compatible with PlayStation 2 games. The 40GB version of the PS3 will eventually be phased out, Reuters reported.
Sony’s announcement comes after Microsoft cut the price of the 20GB Xbox 360 to $299 from $349. Microsoft also plans to introduce a new 60GB Xbox 360 model that retails for $349, to eventually replace the 20GB model, which will be gradually phased out. This price cut is not Sony’s only salvo against Microsoft. Sony announced earlier at E3 that it would be introducing a new video distribution service, as competition for Microsoft Xbox Live, according to Reuters. In addition to watching videos on their PS3s, users will also be able to transfer downloads to their PSPs for portable viewing. With these new announcements from both Sony and Microsoft, Nintendo’s next move is open to question.

It would be one thing if they were taking the 40GB to $299 – but to lower the price of the 80 sure doesn’t do anything for me. I use mine as a media center and pull video/music from a central tera drive, it would be nice to have them on all the tvs. Just my 2 cents. Hope someone enjoys it.
That’s great and everything, but until they make them backwards compatible, I’ll have very little interest in the console. If that happens, my PS2 busts, and FFXIII looks great, then I’ll buy one.
While its nice that their giving more for the money now, all they really did was replace the 40gb hard drive with a 80gb, you lose the memory card readers, the ps2 support, and 2 usb ports.
until and unless ps3’s are made to be compatible with ps2 games, there is no reason to spend a single penny on it

ok first of all I thought we move forward in the game industry? Who cares if you cant play ps2 games? The games are very outdated and to me it wouldnt matter. True sony doesnt have many games just yet but then again 360 had a head start. To me when sony brings out there new online gaming systems, 360 is done. I love sports games, and all the EA with the exception of nba 2k8 look much better on the ps3 than 360. and thats what I care about.
For 9 and 11, the current 80 gigabyte PS3 IS backwards compatible. The only one that isn’t backwards compatible is the 40 gig PS3. The 80 gig being released in September will not be.

I do not have either one. I was a big PS Fan until i just heard Final fantasy 13 will be releases on 360 along with Devil may cry 4 (out all ready), really no use for me to buy the PS3 since the best games i am interested in are on 360 also. You can even get a mod for 360. If ps3 ever come out with a modchip for back ups then it will be on my top list again.
PS3 = no ps2 games and no mod chips to play backups so why buy this?

Who said that the ps3 cant play ps2??? it does play ps2 games, it is backward compatible. i sometimes play my ps2 games.. its cheaper to buy this cus it has divx and blu ray player.. all you need is a usb flash drive to watch the movies from here.. you guys should get this while is cheaper now..
I think the fact that the dropped support for PS2 games(official? if it does fine but no guarantee?) is one of the reasons that they CAN drop the price.
That, plus the drop in hard drive prices probably means that it is a wash for them so they get to keep it only $100 above the 360

Maybe not as many as a console that has been out for half a decade. MS though, they put out games just nobody plays, just so they can say they have more games.
Personally I think Sony should stay with the 20-40gb models, and simply start marketing re-badged, upgradeable HDD’s of all sizes up to 250gb.

An interesting fact that makes the Xbox way more popular in Asia. Xbox can be hacked so there are bootleg games for like 75 cent. PS3 with its BluRay has not bootleg games because blue laser burners are very expensive and cannot be cracked at the moment. I do have PS 1 & 2 but if 3 is not compatible… I might as well start all over with the Xbox.

The worst part is FF XIII is coming for XBox360 simultaneously with PS3 so the former No. 1 Reason for many gamers to grab a PS1 or PS2 is no longer.

Wow, still no love here for the PS3. Doesn’t everyone remember that a standalone Blu-Ray player is more than $399?! This is a decent price cut since you get the Blu-Ray player and an 80gb PS3.
And everyone can shut up about the games. Xbox has Gears of War and Halo. Anything else??? I think you are making up excuses to hate Sony. In the next years, the PS3 will be much more advanced than the 360, just like the original Xbox was to the PS2. If i can not play backups then i do not care about the system no matter what it is. i am not buying a game machine just to watch Blu-ray movies. i am buying a game machine because it is a game machine. 360 you can play back ups, 1 day hopefully ps3 will have backups. As of right now i have neither.

Good deal on the price drops. I own all three consoles:
1) Xbox360 – I play most of my games on this puppy, especially Gears of War. Can’t wait for GOW2!!
2) PS3 – Awesome Media Server and Blu Ray player. I only own Unreal and Burnout. I’ll wait for Metal Gear to hit the $29.99 bin since I just don’t have the time to delve into this type of game.
3) Wii – I still haven’t beat the first level of Zelda coz it is just too involved like Metal Gear. But awesome for entertaining the kids and company with Wii Sports and Mario Kart.

I’ve sold my Xbox360, after getting RROD twice in 18 months. I’m sorry to say but Resistance 2, Killzone2 and MAG to me look much better than anything GOW2 could offer. So i’ve invested in a PS3 and in the first 3 months im very, very impressed plus im not paying to go online :O)

Yes it does have better processing power then Xbox360 but having HALF the RAM of the Xbox is not something that helps. As SONY has seen processing power isn’t everything people aren’t gonna waste tons of money to have little more graphic detail. What makes videogames popular are GAMES, price and backups availability. That’s a misleading title. Sony didn’t cut any prices, they doubled the hard drive in their 40GB model. This 80GB is identical to it, along with no backwards compatibility. If you want to play those PS2 games on an HDTV you’d best snatch up one of those MGS bundles :]

Look at the specs on the PS3 and the 360 before opening your mouth. The 360 indeed DOES NOT have double the memory.
It has 512 MB GDDR3 RAM, while the PS3 has 256MB XDR Main RAM and another stick of 256MB GDDR3 RAM. And that XDR stands for Xtreme Data Rate, and is actually faster than the GDDR3 RAM. So in other words, PS3 wins. Look up your facts buddy.
Oh, and about the developers not wanting to go through the measures for extra details? That makes absolutely no sense. I guess people were saying the same thing when the first Xbox was being compared to the PS3. At first the games looked the same, then after awhile, developers were spending more time to make the Xbox game look better because the system could handle more.

ZonaJona is right Dante. The PS3 wins. Not only that, historically, the XBOX 360 has very bad quality and craftsmanship. It breaks down all the time. I’m not sure if they fixed that in the new batches of XBOX 360 but certainly the noise of the fan gets incredibly irritating and distracting during gameplay, especially during movies.

My opinion is that both systems are awesome and seem the same to me. I bought my PS3 for the BluRay player, which was well worth it. I have bought a couple of games and they seem the same quality to me. I think that the PS3 BluRay setup has more potential then the 360, but until they start to use it, it is not worth it. I got RROD once, I then just bought me a new Elite, which I love and am happy. PS3s get hot too. There are little things that make one better than the other. I have one for Guitar Hero/Rock Band fans. Have you tried to play Rock Band with your Guitar Hero 3 Les Paul? Will not work. Which is just stupid. It does however work on the 360. There are just little things. I like both, but will stick with my 360 more.
i think if you’d really like a bigger harddrive, just go buy one at the local PC hardware store and plug it in yourself.

Also, this is NOT A PRICE DROP. It’s the same thing as the 360 thing. They’re only upgrading the HDD. The 80gb which was $499 had BC with ps2 games, that’s what GAMERS WANT(the ps3 have outsold the 40gb version since day one).

Since i dont own any PS2 games i decide to get the PS3 when Wal Mart was doing the sale on them. I have had a xbox 360 since day one. I play more games on the Xbox 360. Both consoles are cool in there own way. But between the 360 and PS3 i can play any movie. So like anything they both have there ups and downs. It is all about which system you prefer. My biggest gripe with Sony is no HD cables with the system. If you can afford it get both systems they are both good systems with there own flaws.
Ok for all the “wise” xbots out there who are saying that the PS3 have no games to play : Please enlighten me and list me all the exclusives 360 AAA games. I can only find 2 and BOTH pf them are also on PC :
- Gears Of War (who is also on PC)
- Mass Effect (also on PC)

My main computer is my laptop with a average descreet graphics. Definitely not powerful enough to play games that looks as pretty as the 360. Sure I can spend $500-600 for a pc but /strug I got tons of friends that own a 360.

@72 : Forza is not better than Gran Turismo by any stretch of the imagination. It doesn’t have the depth , customization nor the numbers of cars + tracks that GT have.
Fora comparaison GT 5 will 600 + cars compared to Forza mere 300. Forza also only has 14 tracks vs GT 40 +. GT5 will also feature improved gameplay and AI + some cars damage so it will just obliterate Forza 2 on all fronts.

it didnt drop 100$… what happened is the 40gb version got a bigger drive… their will still be a 80gb with backwards compatablity and media slots etc… its just the cheaper 40gb with stripped features is getting a bigger drive.

Yes you can, which is why PS1 games are available to buy on the PlayStation Store which will work on any PS3 or the PSP or via remote play with a PSP.

Exactly. Sony said that they wouldn’t drop the price and they haven’t. They did exactly what M$ did but they are discontinuing the 40GB model rather than sell it at a lower price.

I know why that PS3 failed but I won’t go into details because that would be me defending it, obviously… but hey, at least it’s only a software problem which can be fixed quickly (48hrs or less in the UK) rather than a hardware problem.

good luck fitting anything above a 350gb in there (laptop drives are not available above this yet), and even then they are a hell of a lot pricer than standard drives.
Also, from what I can tell going on your naive comments, hard drive space DOES matter. the drive can fill up quickly when you look at downloadable games, HD clips, music, software etc.
Throw in the HD TV tuner that sony are releasing, a large hard drive is even more of a factor.
I’m not a sony fanboi by a long shot (even though I do own one because it came via redemption with my $3k TV), but after reading so much crap in this thread from those who seem to get their rocks off on badmouthing one company over another I just had to add my 2 cents.

Unfortunately the 500GB 2.5″ SATA’s are currently 12.5mm thick. Hopefully they will sell them in the 9mm size soon. I can’t wait till I can get a 1TB HDD in my PS3, which currently has more HD films on it than I could ever have with a 360.

They are a lot more expensive than DVD9’s but they will come down in time.
Then again, the price of DVD9’s hasn’t changed much over the last 2 years, if at all. Most manufacturers still only mass produce discs capable of 2.4x which is a joke. DVD9’s need to be much cheaper and faster before BD-R will come down to a respectable price.
While I’m on the subject of DVD9’s, where are the re-writeable ones (DL DVD +/- RW)? The standard was approved in 2006 but they still haven’t hit the market.

360 is a console looks great but after you see it in real you would say its made from the cheapest material on the planet it feels and looks garbage!The jostick have a Battery and we livin in 2008!!? you get a external battery charger ..which is space consuming .. All the wires of the 360 are exremly thick. You get a brick of a AC adapter cable (wtf).
Then there is the Fan and Cd-drive Noise . What the hell is that, looks like there sombody vacuumcleaning no its a 360.EXTREMLY ANNOYING.
Now ps3 smooth elgant piece of work , no fan noise . Normal sized cables . Nice inbuild battery ..No external charger

Only reason I would get it is for the bluray + media player, the game selection sorta suck for it, Pc has better selection and easier to DL ^ install. as for the cost of bluray movies has no one heard about has movie rental company Lovefilm … they don’t charge extra for bluray rental and i can also rent ps3 games
what i don’t understand is why anyone bashes the ps3 as it is constantly evolving and getting better … it’s built to last and as Sony recently announced they are also focusing now on getting more games.
biggest bonus though with the Ps3 is the true 1080p HD experience in games and movies … answer me does any other console offer this?
